May vehicle production in Thailand up 24.7%, sales were up 15.9%
According to FTI, Bangkok Post and The Nation, vehicle production in May surged 24.7% year on year to 168,394 units, increasing total production from January to May 3.8% to 813,505 units.
FTI reported on June 21 that production for domestic sales in May climbed 28.4% to 70,192 units, and production for export in May rose 22.1% year on year to 98,202 units.
The double digit production increase in May is attributed to special factors such as Toyota Hilux's low volume in May 2015 due to a model change, and production of an all-new Honda Civic starting in March 2016.

The export of finished cars in May edged up 11.9% year on year to 99,547 units, and decreased 2.3% to 487,798 units in the first five months.

FTI reported that sales surged by 15.9% year on year in May to 66,019 vehicles. However, the market for the first five months remained in the red, down 2.0% from the same period last year to 302,565 units.
FTI 's spokesman Surapong Paisitpatanapong said the sales surge reflected improved economic conditions helped by government measures to boost spending and state investment in infrastructure projects. "We strongly believe the government's stimulus measures and accelerated investment in megaprojects will help boost car sales in the remaining months," he said.

May vehicle sales in Thailand increased 16%

According to Thai Toyota and other sources, new vehicle sales in Thailand increased 16.0% year on year to 66,035 units in May.
May sales were boosted by a 22.4% increase in pickup truck sales to 28,904 and a 108% surge in passenger pickup vehicles to 4,645.
By brand, Toyota was up 23.8% to 22,244 units. Isuzu was up 17.3% to 12,757 units and Honda was up 10.6% to 9,812 units. Mitsubishi sales were up 26.6% to 4,274 units and Nissan was up 2.7% to 3,856 units.
FTI will revise its projections in July. FTI reported on June 21 the Thai industries sentiment index (TISI) rose in May to 86.4 points from 85 from April, mainly driven by easing drought conditions and the government's investment stimulus policies. The index has remained below 100 points for 48 months since June 2012.

Flash report, April 2016

24 May 2016

*Data in the flash report may from time to time differ from data in the detail report to be announced at a later date due to a difference in the data source.

April vehicle sales in Thailand increased by 1.7%, production up 11.5%
According to Thai Toyota and other sources, new vehicle sales in Thailand increased by 1.7% to 54,986 units in April.
April sales were boosted by a 13.9% increase in pickup truck sales to 23,019 and a 92.4% surge in passenger pickup vehicles to 4,609.
By brand, Toyota was up 12.4% to 14,895 units. Isuzu was up 2.4% to 11,949 units and Honda was up 5.9% to 9,109 units. Mitsubishi sales were down 2.7% to 3,582 units and Mazda was up 12.9% to 3,443 units.
The impact of the new excise taxes from January is diminishing.
FTI has maintained its projection of domestic passenger car sales at 750,000-780,000 units this year despite witnessing a recovery in pickup truck sales. This year's sales are expected to decline by 2.5-6.2% from last year's figures.

New vehicle production in April increased 11.5% to 138,237 units, while exports decreased 2.0% to 80,401 units.
Double digit production increase in April is attributed to special factors such as Toyota Hilux's low volume in April 2015 due to model change, and an all-new Honda Civic production start in March 2016.

Flash report, March 2016

20 Apr. 2016

*There are cases where recently released data and detailed information in the database do not match up for reasons including different information sources, and discrepancies between preliminary reports and confirmed data.

New vehicle sales in Thailand fell by 2.0% in March
According to Thai Toyota and other sources, new vehicle sales in Thailand fell by 2.0% to 72,646 units in March.
By brand, Toyota was down 23.1% to 21,101 units. Isuzu was up 2.0% to 13,198 units and Honda was up 8.1% to 11,352 units. Mitsubishi sales were up 54.3% to 6,963 units and Nissan was down 19.3% to 4,848 units.
A sales decline continued, after the government introduced the new excise taxes from January 2016, which increases tax for vehicles with large engines and high emissions. However, the negative impact is becoming smaller.
Financial institutions' tight loan approval policies, accompanied by sluggish consumer spending power, helped drag down sales in the first three months.
Despite launches of new models, the Bangkok International Motor Show order taking was down 12% y/y to 32,571 units.

New vehicle production in March increased 8.2% to 192,811 units, while exports decreased 14.3% to 109,334 units.

Flash report, February 2016

22 Mar. 2016

*Data in the flash report may from time to time differ from data in the detail report to be announced at a later date due to a difference in the data source.

New vehicle sales in Thailand fell by 10.7% in February
According to Thai Toyota and other sources, new vehicle sales in Thailand fell by 10.7% to 57,093 units in February.
By brand, Toyota was down 30.9% to 15,569 units. Isuzu was up 3.5% to 12,171 units and Honda was down 8.3% to 8,063 units. Mitsubishi sales were up 12.5% to 4,865 units and Nissan was down 25.0% to 3,602 units.
A sales decline continued, after the government introduced the new excise taxes from January 2016, which increases tax for vehicles with large engines and high emissions.
Financial institutions' tight loan approval policies, accompanied by sluggish consumer spending power, also helped drag down sales in the first two months.
Thai Toyota predicted a flat growth for automobile sales in March despite launches of new models and the Bangkok International Motor Show, because the consumer confidence index in February was still on a downward trend and consumers were concerned about the uncertain global economy.

New vehicle production in February dropped 7.1% to 166,412 units, while exports decreased 3.2% to 104,712 units.

Flash report, January 2016

*Data in the flash report may from time to time differ from data in the detail report to be announced at a later date due to a difference in the data source.

New vehicle sales in Thailand fell by 13.2% in January
According to Thai Toyota and other sources, new vehicle sales in Thailand fell by 13.2% to 51,821 units in January.
By body type, passenger cars were down 30.0% year over year to 16,384 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 2.4% to 35,437 units. Pickup sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were up 0.9% to 29,000 units.
By brand, Toyota* was down 31.1% to 13,843 units. Isuzu was down 1.4% to 11,044 units and Honda was down 44.4% to 5,613 units. Mitsubishi sales were up 19.1% to 4,800 units and Nissan was also up 5.0% to 4,251 units.
A sales decline had been widely expected, however, after the government gave notice last year that excise taxes would increase for vehicles with large engines and high emissions from January 2016.
The FTI (Federation of Thai Industries) expects the full year sales will fall by between 2 and 6% to 750,000-780,000 units

New vehicle production in January dropped 11.7% to 147,651 units, while exports rose 1.4% to 93,714 units.
The FTI expects the full year production will increase by 4-5% to 2 million units helped by higher exports.
