Russian car sales increase 2.3% in December, down 2.3% for 2019
The 179,235 new cars and light commercial vehicles sold in Russia in December represented an increase 2.3% compared to the same month in 2018 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee.
In all of 2019, 1,759,532 cars were sold in Russia, a 2.3% down from 2018 sales.
Among the four largest OEM retailers in Russia in 2019, Lada sales were up 0.6% to 362,356 units, Kia sales were down 0.7% to 225,901 units, Hyundai sales were up 0.3% to 178,809 units and Renault sales were up 5.8% to 144,989 units sold.
The top 3 models sold in 2019 were Lada Granta, Lada Vesta, Kia Rio.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “In a strong closing effort, December market sales improved by 2.3% year-on-year. Despite that, cumulative sales in the 4th quarter however remained in negative territory showing a 3.0% drop compared to the same period one year ago. Full year sales in 2019 reached 1.76 million units -41 thousand units or 2.3% below the level of 2018. For the current year, we expect similarly challenging market circumstances. Full year sales in 2020 are anticipated at a level of 1.72 million units which would represent a further 2.1% decline from the market level reached in 2019.”

Russian car sales decrease 6.4% in November

The 156,848 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in November 2019 represented a decrease of 6.4% compared to the same month in 2018 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on December 5.
The 1,580,297 new cars and LCVs sold in the first eleven months of 2019 represented a decrease of 2.8% over the same period in 2018.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in November 2019, AvtoVAZ sales were down 7.3% to 31,217 units, Kia sales were down 6.7% to 19,612 units, Hyundai was up 2.7% to 16,314 units, Renault was down 5.1% to 12,833 units and Volkswagen was down 10.0% to 9,160 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in November were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “With over 6% volume loss, November sales confirmed the prevailing negative trend in the Russian car market this year. Of course, the year-on-year comparison should consider the strong sales in the latter part of the previous year, on the back of the anticipated VAT increase. For exactly the same reason however we do not expect to see a trend recovery in December. ”

Russian car sales decrease 5.2% in October
The 152,057 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in October 2019 represented a decrease of 5.2% compared to the same month in 2018 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on November 7.
The 1,423,449 new cars and LCVs sold in the first ten months of 2019 represented a decrease of 2.4% over the same period in 2018.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in October 2019, AvtoVAZ sales were down 5.5% to 30,237 units, Kia sales were down 4.1% to 20,141 units, Hyundai was basically flat to 15,827 units, Renault was up 12.5% to 13,670 units and Volkswagen was down 6.8% to 9,253 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in October were the Lada Granta, Kia Rio and Lada Vesta.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Total market sales in October underachieved last year’s result by 5.2%, firmly keeping the market on the path of a slow but continuous erosion of the much-needed volume gains secured in the years 2017-2018. This is not the direction the industry wants or needs, of course, but it is hard to see at the moment where a change to the better should be coming from any time soon. ”

Russian car sales decrease 0.2% in September
The 157,129 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in September 2019 represented a decrease of 0.2% compared to the same month in 2018 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on October 4.
The 1,271,392 new cars and LCVs sold in the first nine months of 2019 represented a decrease of 2.0% over the same period in 2018.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in September 2019, AvtoVAZ sales were up 1.1% to 31,516 units, Kia sales were up 1.5% to 19,194 units, Hyundai was down 0.3% to 16,050 units, Renault was up 28.2% to 13,326 units, and VW was up 2.1% to 9,560 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in September were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Market sales in September were flat against the level achieved in the same month last year - not a bad result looking at the negative track record in recent months. Cumulative sales in the January-September period however stand at (2%) down year-on-year. With 3 months to go in the current year, the AMC expects a full-year sales result of 1.76 million units, reflecting the same slightly negativetrend towards year end. The uncertain element here is the possibility of another significant increase of the utilization fee in 2020 as reportedly being discussed by the government. Should such a decision be adopted indeed, it would add another question mark to the long-term prospects of the Russian car market as whole. Short-term however, sales of imported cars might receive an artificial boost - of course at the cost of sales in the following period. ”

Russian vehicle sales decrease 3.3% in June
The 151,180 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in June 2019 represented a decrease of 3.3% compared to the same month in 2018 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on July 4.
The 828,750 new cars and LCVs sold in the first half of 2019 represented an decrease of 2.4% over the same period in 2018.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in June 2019, AvtoVAZ sales were down 2.0% to 30,768 units, Kia sales were down 2.6% to 19,343 units, Hyundai was down 0.6% to 16,331 units, Renault was down 12.0% to 11,944 units and VW was up 5.7% to 9,441 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in June were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Six months into 2019, we find the market 2.4% down year-on-year, with a second quarter that proved more challenging than the first. Market expectations for the second half of the year are not fundamentally better. It is clear that market growth in the full year of 2019 is not a realistic scenario anymore. Even with a certain trend improvement in the second half, it would appear that the best outcome the market can hope for is to equalize last year’s sales result. ”

Russian car sales decrease 6.7% in May
The 137,624 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in May 2019 represented a decrease of 6.7% compared to the same month in 2018 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on June 6.
The 677,570 new cars and LCVs sold in the first five months of 2019 represented an decrease of 2.2% over the same period in 2018.
Among the four largest OEM retailers in Russia in May 2019, AvtoVAZ sales were up 0.3% to 28,739 units, Kia sales were down 0.5% to 19,461 units, Hyundai was down 6.1% to 14,891 units and Renault was down 12.6% to 10,595 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in May were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “No good news from the automotive market in May, instead a nearly 7% drop in sales volume - the most noticeable year-on-year loss in over 2 years. Of course, it could be said that the extraordinary warm weather this year is not helping retail sales as many people spend more time than usual away from the big cities and their shopping malls. The main reason of the current trend however remains a weaker retail demand, driven by macroeconomic factors such as rising household costsin the wake of the VAT increase earlier this year. Specifically automotive, we have a market that is still digesting a substantial reduction in government subsidies stimulating retail purchases in the past. We will have to see how these factors play out over time, but for now we are looking at a rather challenging environment.”

Russian car sales increase 1.8% in March
The 160,180 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in March 2019 represented a increase of 1.8% compared to the same month in 2018 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on April 4.
The 391,650 new cars and LCVs sold in the first three months of 2019 represented a decrease of 0.3% over the same period in 2018.
Among the four largest OEM retailers in Russia in March 2019, AvtoVAZ sales were up 10.1% to 33,821 units, Kia sales were up 2.4% to 19,560 units, Hyundai was down 2.3% to 16,322 units and Renault was down 7.1% to 13,051 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in March were the Lada Vesta, Lada Granta and Kia Rio.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “The small plus in March sales, following a similarly small minus in February suggests the market is still looking for a firm direction this year. Cumulative sales in the first quarter are almost at prior year level, achieved through a much bigger effort by market participants as consumer demand is still lagging behind the momentum we saw one year ago. Government subsidies for lower-priced vehicles effective from March obviously also helped to improve the total market picture this month.”

Russian car sales decrease 3.6% in February
The 128,406 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in February 2019 represented a decrease of 3.6% compared to the same month in 2018 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on March 6.
The 231,470 new cars and LCVs sold in the first two months of 2019 represented an decrease of 1.8% over the same period in 2018.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in February 2019, AvtoVAZ sales were down 1.4% to 27,011 units, Kia sales were down 0.4% to 17,731 units, Hyundai was up 6.1% to 14,260 units, Renault was down 24.6% to 8,499 units and Volkswagen was up 3.9% to 7,346 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in February were the Lada Granta, Lada Vesta and Kia Rio.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “For the first time in almost 2 years, market sales in February showed a - however small - downturn compared to the prior year result. Consumer confidence has been in decline for several months now, so this dip into negative territory is not entirely unexpected. The key question is where the market is headed in the coming few months - back to stability and growth or in the opposite direction. The present outlook is not too strong. This includes recently announced government measures in support of car purchases, e.g. for young families, which are too limited in scope to make a fundamental difference. ”
