Russian car sales increase 5.6% in December, up 12.8% for 2018
The 175,240 new cars and light commercial vehicles sold in Russia in December represented a increase 5.6% compared to the same month in 2017 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee.
In all of 2018, 1,800,591 cars were sold in Russia, an 12.8% up from 2017 sales.
Among the four largest OEM retailers in Russia in 2018, Lada sales were up 15.6% to 360,204 units, Kia sales were up 25.1% to 227,584 units, Hyundai sales were up 12.9% to 178,269 units and Renault sales were up 0.3% to 137,602 units sold.
The top 3 models sold in 2018 were Lada Vesta, Lada Granta, Kia Rio.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Total market sales in December improved by 5.6% on an annual basis, closing the year with a 12-month streak of consecutive growth. Thus, cumulative sales in 2018 reached 1.801 million units, posting a 12.8% plus compared to the prior year. The outlook for 2019 is not so straightforward. Consumer tax increases and a possible tightening of US sanctions create significant risks and uncertainties for the market performance especially in the first quarter of the year. Assuming no drastic change in government policy and support for the automotive sector, market participants however expect that fundamental market demand should be robust enough for sales to consolidate and to return to a growth pattern in the course of the year. With this in mind, our 2019 full year prediction for sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia is a moderate improvement to 1.87 million units, or by 3.6% compared to the prior year”.

Russian car sales increase 8.2% in October
The 160,425 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in October 2018 represented a increase of 8.2% compared to the same month in 2017 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on November 7.
The 1,457,857 new cars and LCVs sold in the first ten months of 2018 represented an increase of 14.1% over the same period in 2017.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in October 2018, AvtoVAZ sales were up 11.8% to 32,005 units, Kia sales were up 20.7% to 21,002 units, Hyundai was up 0.7% to 15,820 units, Renault was down 6.8% to 12,154 units, and Volkswagen was up 23.9% to 9,928 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in October were the Lada Vesta, Lada Granta and Kia Rio.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Moving into the final quarter of the year, Russian car sales continue to demonstrate robust momentum. This is a pleasant fact, but not a surprise considering the tailwind the whole retail sector is receiving during the countdown for a change in VAT taxation. While for now the market is doing fine, there is a growing concern among its participants about the continuity of retail demand from January. ”

Russian car sales increase 11.0% in August
The 147,388 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in August 2018 represented a increase of 11.0% compared to the same month in 2017 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on September 6.
The 1,140,061 new cars and LCVs sold in the first eight months of 2018 represented an increase of 16.2% over the same period in 2017.
Among the five largest OEM retailers in Russia in August 2018, AvtoVAZ sales were up 9.4% to 28,683 units, Kia sales were up 25.3% to 18,857 units, Hyundai was up 4.1% to 13,993 units, Renault was up 3.3% to 11,534 units, and Toyota was up 23.3% to 9,748 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in August were the Lada Vesta, Kia Rio and Lada Granta.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “The pace of market recovery has been robust from the start of this year, with year-on-year growth reaching 18% by the end of July. In August the healthy trend continued, supported by a spike in spontaneous customer purchases on the background of the recent weakening of the Ruble exchange rate. The growth story is likely to continue in the coming months, as the planned VAT increase from January 2019 should make sure retail demand remains strong -in any case before the end of the current year. ”

Russian car sales increase 10.8% in June
The 156,351 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in June 2018 represented a increase of 10.8% compared to the same month in 2017 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on July 5.
The 849,221 new cars and LCVs sold in the first half of 2018 represented an increase of 18.2% over the same period in 2017.
Among the four largest OEM retailers in Russia in June 2018, AvtoVAZ sales were up 14.6% to 31,404 units, Kia sales were up 18.5% to 19,861 units, Hyundai was up 11.9% to 16,422 units and Renault was up 10.9% to 13,567 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in June were the Lada Vesta, Lada Granta and Kia Rio.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Pace of market recovery in June softened somewhat relative to what we have seen so far this year. Still, nearly 11% year-on-year improvement is a very respectable result, especially in the light of the ongoing world cup event in Russia. In addition, thanks to strong sales in the preceding months, vehicle inventories are rather lean across the industry, dampening sales growth if only temporarily. All in all, the first half of 2018 has been successful for the Russian car market, and there is good reason to believe that the positive momentum will continue in the coming months. ”

Russian car sales increase 18.0% in May
The 147,525 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in May 2018 represented a increase of 18.0% compared to the same month in 2017 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on June 6.
The 692,870 new cars and LCVs sold in the first five months of 2018 represented an increase of 20.0% over the same period in 2017.
Among the four largest OEM retailers in Russia in May 2018, AvtoVAZ sales were up 14.4% to 28,654 units, Kia sales were up 29.4% to 19,561 units, Hyundai was up 32.7% to 15,859 units and Renault was up 11.1% to 12,128 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in May were the Kia Rio, Lada Granta and Lada Vesta.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Russian car market sales continue to recover at a robust pace in May, improving 18% vs. the same month last year. Cumulative volume gain in the first five months of the current year stands at 20% - a significant step ahead from the growth rate of 5% seen in 2017. This encouraging trend reflects the positive dynamics in the retail sector of the economy in general, accompanied by a steady improvement in consumer confidence. Vehicles sales in particular have been profiting in recent weeks from a weaker currency, prompting some customers to buy earlier rather than later. It remains to be seen whether, and to which extent, this factor will have an adverse effect on the future pace of retail sales. ”

Russian car sales increase 17.6% in April
The 152,425 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in April 2018 represented a increase of 17.6% compared to the same month in 2017 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on May 8.
The 545,345 new cars and LCVs sold in the first four months of 2018 represented an increase of 20.5% over the same period in 2017.
Among the four largest OEM retailers in Russia in April 2018, AvtoVAZ sales were up 16.6% to 30,712 units, Kia sales were up 22.4% to 19,591 units, Hyundai was up 16.2% to 15,863 units and Renault was up 3.3% to 11,954 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in April were the Kia Rio, Lada Vesta and Lada Granta.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “A strong month for the Russian car market, repeating last year’s double digit gain in sales volume. Consumer appetite remains robust, supported by a growing choice of new products offered at attractive prices. The noticeable weakening of the Ruble exchange rate in recent weeks has been an extraordinary factor motivating customers to accelerate the purchase of a new car in anticipation of potential price increases. New vehicle orders have spiked as a result, and will continue to materialize as extra good news in the sales statistics in the short term.”

Russian car sales increase 13.9% in March
The 157,279 new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) sold in Russia in March 2018 represented a increase of 13.9% compared to the same month in 2017 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on April 5.
The 392,920 new cars and LCVs sold in the first three months of 2018 represented an increase of 21.7% over the same period in 2017.
Among the four largest OEM retailers in Russia in March 2018, AvtoVAZ sales were up 22.3% to 30,708 units, Kia sales were up 30.7% to 19,096 units, Hyundai was up 17.5% to 16,705 units and Renault was up 24.6% to 14,047 units.
The 3 bestselling models sold in March were the Kia Rio, Lada Vesta and Lada Granta.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Market momentum in March continued at a robust pace, concluding a 12-month long period of uninterrupted year-on-year recovery. From now on, it will be harder, at the same time significantly more valuable for the market to achieve substantial growth rates on a continuous basis. Market participants consent in that the prospect of further growth is the most likely scenario for 2018. AEB members forecast total market sales to improve by about 10% compared to 2018, to a level of 1.75 million units.”

Russian vehicle sales increase 24.7% in February
The 133,177 new cars and light commercial vehicles sold in Russia in February 2018 represented a increase of 24.7% compared to the same month in 2017 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on March 6.
Among the four largest OEM retailers in Russia in February 2018, Lada sales were up 37.0% to 27,401 units, Kia sales were up 43.6% to 17,795 units, Hyundai sales were up 43.1% to 13,434 units, and Renault sales were up 17.1% to 11,268 units.
The top 3 models sold in February were the Kia Rio, Lada Vesta and Lada Granta.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “Russian car market sales continue to demonstrate healthy momentum in February, extending the string of uninterrupted year-on-year growth to a robust 12-month period. Over 27% improvement in the first 2 months are an impressive turnaround for market, which battered bad news until just one year ago. Moving forward, market outlook remains positive but it is reasonable to expect that the pace of year-on-year recovery should slow down as a result of the growing base effect applying from March last year.”

Russian car sales increase 31.3% in January 2018
The 102,464 new cars and light commercial vehicles sold in Russia in January 2018 represented a increase of 31.3% compared to the same month in 2017 according to the Association of European Business (AEB) Automobile Manufacturers Committee on February 6.
Among the four largest OEM retailers in Russia in January 2018, Lada sales were up 28.6% to 21,005 units, Kia sales were up 48.6% to 15,310 units, Hyundai sales were up 30.7% to 8,752 units, and Renault sales were up 51.3% to 7,880 units sold.
The top 3 models sold in January were the Lada Vesta, Kia Rio and Lada Granta.
Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee said, “A strong start for the Russian car market in 2018. Partly owed to a low prior year base, the 31% headline growth in January is remarkable in the sense that it is the largest year-on-year improvement in a single month since 2011. Positive sales momentum can be expected to continue in the short term, although likely at a somewhat dampened pace. Customers are responding well to the current product and price offerings, aware of the fact that 2017 model year incentives are limited as the sell-out of respective dealer stocks is progressing faster than in recent years. ”
