On March 4, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 90,712 units in February 2026 represented a 4.5% decrease from February 2025. Of these, sales of vehicles sourced from China amounted to 22,362 units, surpassing Japan for the first time in 28 years in a single month. Japan had been Australia’s leading source of vehicles since 1998. New vehicle sales of 177,804 units in the first two months of the year represented a 2.2% decrease YoY.
Passenger car sales of 12,642 units in February represented a 1.1% decrease from the same period in 2025, SUV sales of 53,876 units represented a 6.2% decrease, LCV sales of 21,191 units represented a 0.7% decrease and MHCV sales of 3,003 units represented a 12.9% decrease.
FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said that in February, after 28 years, Japan has been overtaken by China as the largest source of vehicles for the Australian market. Since 2020, 10 new brands have entered the Australian market. Six of these launched in the past two years, while nine of the 10 new entrants are made in China. The Australian market is one of the most open and competitive in the world. Consumers are the beneficiaries of that competition.
Among the companies, Toyota sales decreased 27.8% to 13,606 units, Mazda sales decreased 19.9% to 7,042 units, Ford sales increased 9.0% to 6,907 units, Kia sales were flat at 6,710 units and Hyundai sales increased 4.5% to 6,266 units. In addition, Mitsubishi, which ranked 7th, also saw a 22.3% decrease compared to the same month last year, a significant decrease along with Toyota and Mazda.
The best-selling cars in February 2026, in order of popularity, were Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, and Chery Tiggo 4 Pro.

On February 4, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 87,092 units in January 2026 represented an increase of 0.3% over the last January.
Passenger car sales of 13,365 units in January represented a 4.6% increase from the same period in 2025, SUV sales of 53,263 units represented a 1.0% increase, LCV sales of 17,995 units represented a 2.5% decrease and MHCV sales of 2,469 units represented a 12.4% decrease.
FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said that January’s figures show a market that is stable. It seems fewer petrol vehicles sold and rapid growth in plug-in hybrids (PHEV), while uptake of hybrid (HEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) is more stable.
Among the companies, Toyota sales decreased 22.3% to 14,310 units, Mazda sales decreased 7.6% to 7,692 units, Kia sales increased 15.4% to 6,600 units, Ford sales decreased 10.5% to 6,116 units and Hyundai sales increased 6.9% to 5,856 units. In addition, BYD and Chery, which ranked at 6th and 9th, significantly increased than last year, up 640.9% and 105.8% respectively. The results show that Korean and Chinese manufacturers are growing in Australian market, which is weakening Japanese manufacturers.
The best-selling cars in January 2026, in order of popularity, were Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, and Mazda CX-5.
