Australian new vehicle sales up 12.1% in December, up 12.5% in 2023
On January 4, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 98,544 units in December 2023 represented an increase 12.1% over December 2022.
New vehicle sales of 1,216,780 units in 2023 represented an 12.5% increase from 2022.
Passenger car sales of 211,361 units in 2023 represented an 4.1% increase from the same period in 2022, SUV sales of 679,462 units represented an 18.2% increase, LCV sales of 274,185 units represented an 6.9% increase and MHCV sales of 51,772 units represented an 9.3% increase.
"This extraordinary result is a testament to the adaptability and resilience of both industry players and consumers alike. Despite the supply chain disruptions faced in recent times, consumers now have greater access to a broad range of choices, fostering increased accessibility in the market" FCAI Chief Executive, Tony Weber, said.
"As we celebrate this historic achievement, we recognise that the automotive sector will face challenges in the coming months. Cost-of-living pressures and increased interest rates will impact the market, and we anticipate a challenging 2024.

On December 4, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 112,141 units in November 2023 represented an increase 17.9% over the last November.
New vehicle sales of 1,118,236 units in the first eleven months of the year represented an 12.6% increase YoY.
Passenger car sales of 18,470 units in November represented an 10.7% increase YoY, SUV sales of 62,347 units represented an 19.0% increase, LCV sales of 26,772 units represented an 24.8% increase and MHCV sales of 4,552 units represented an 0.2% increase.
Year-to-date sales of battery electric vehicles have reached 80,446. EV’s represented 7.7% of the monthly sales and 7.2 % of sales year to date.
Among the companies, Toyota sales increased 4.5% YoY to 21,002 units, Mazda sales increased 15.3% to 8,707 units, Ford sales increased 14.0% to 8,165 units, Hyundai sales increased 21.7% to 6,718 units and Mitsubishi sales increased 12.8% to 6,268 units.
The best-selling cars in November 2023, in order of popularity, were Ford Ranger, Toyota Hi-Lux, and Isuzu Ute D-Max.

On November 3, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 106,809 units in October 2023 represented an increase 22.3% over the last October.
New vehicle sales of 1,006,095 units in the first ten months of the year represented an 12.0% increase YoY.
Passenger car sales of 17,616 units in October represented a 32.2% increase YoY, SUV sales of 59,259 units represented an 22.3% increase, LCV sales of 25,681 units represented an 19.7% increase and MHCV sales of 4,253 units represented an 4.5% increase.
EV accounted for 5.7% share.
Among the companies, Toyota sales increased 11.2% YoY to 20,298 units, Mazda sales increased 61.3% to 9,316 units, Ford sales increased 10.0% to 8,605 units, Hyundai sales increased 25.2% to 6,620 units and Mitsubishi sales increased 6.9% to 6,395 units. MG came in sixth with 6,102 units, up 21.3%.
The best-selling cars in October 2023, in order of popularity, were Toyota Hi-Lux, Isuzu Ute D-Max, and Toyota RAV4.

Australian new vehicle sales increase 18.3% in September
On September 4, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 110,702 units in September 2023 represented an increase 18.3% over the last September.
New vehicle sales of 899,286 units in the first nine months of the year represented an 10.9% increase YoY.
Passenger car sales of 18,611 units in September represented an 6.4% increase YoY, SUV sales of 64,052 units represented an 29.0% increase, LCV sales of 23,793 units represented an 6.9% increase and MHCV sales of 4,246 units represented an 1.8% increase.
EV accounted for 8.0 % of sales, up 1.6 % point than previous month, while electrified vehicles (EV, HV and PHV) recorded 18.3 % of the sales.
Among the companies, Toyota sales increased 40.8% YoY to 20,912 units, Mazda sales increased 10.6% to 8,031 units, Ford sales increased 20.8% to 8,015 units, Kia sales increased 0.2% to 7,303 units and Hyundai sales decreased 4.4% to 6,217 units. MG came in seventh, with a 65.6% increase to 5,400 units (4.9% share).
The best-selling cars in September 2023, in order of popularity, were Toyota Hi-Lux, Ford Ranger and Tesla Model Y.

Australian new vehicle sales increase 15.4% in August
On September 5, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 109,966 units in August 2023 represented an increase 15.4% over the last August.
New vehicle sales of 788,584 units in the first eight months of the year represented a 9.9% increase YoY.
Passenger car sales of 19,336 units in August represented an 3.3% decrease YoY, SUV sales of 62,313 units represented a 28.3% increase, LCV sales of 24,031 units represented an 6.9% increase and MHCV sales of 4,286 units represented a 1.7% increase.
EV accounted for 6.4 % of sales and HV accounted for 10.5 % of whole sales in August.
Among the companies, Toyota sales increased 8.3% YoY to 22,321 units, Mazda sales decreased 4.1% to 8,458 units, Ford sales increased 35.3% to 7,898 units, Hyundai sales decreased 2.0% to 6,513 units and Kia sales decreased 4.0% to 6,510 units.
In fifth place was MG, with 5,368 units, up 74.6%. Its market share rose to 4.9% from 3.2% a year earlier.
The best-selling cars in August 2023, in order of popularity, were Toyota Hi-Lux, Ford Ranger and Toyota RAV4.

On August 3, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 96,859 units in July 2023 represented an increase 14.7 % over the last July.
New vehicle sales of 678,618 units in the first seven months of the year represented a 9.0 % increase YoY.
Passenger car sales of 17,156 units in July represented a 6.9 % increase YoY,
SUV sales of 57,003 units represented a 27.5 % increase, LCV sales of 19,244 units represented a 4.0 % decrease and MHCV sales of 3,456 units represented a 5.8 % decrease.
Sales of zero and low emission vehicles continued to grow with 17.9 % being battery electric, hybrid or plug-in hybrid models. EVs accounted for 7.0 % of July sales.
China continues to grow in importance as a country of origin with an increase of 130.1 % YoY to 15,853 units.
Among the companies, Toyota sales decreased 1.9% YoY to 19,191 units, Mazda sales increased 5.4% to 8,307 units, Ford sales increased 60.1% to 7,109 units, Hyundai sales decreased 4.0% to 6,521 units and Kia sales decreased 8.4% to 6,150 units.
The best-selling cars in July 2023, in order of popularity, were Ford Ranger, Toyota Hi-Lux and MG ZS.

Australian new vehicle sales increase 25.0% in June
On July 5, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 124,926 units in June 2023 represented an increase 25.0% over the last June.
New vehicle sales of 581,759 units in the first six months of the year represented an 8.2% increase YoY.
Passenger car sales of 20,397 units in June represented a 10.6% increase YoY, SUV sales of 69,059 units represented a 31.5% increase, LCV sales of 28,833 units represented a 20.9% increase and MHCV sales of 6,637 units represented a 28.5% increase.
Sales of zero and low emission vehicles continued to grow with 16.6 % BEV, HV or PHV models. BEVs accounted for 8.8 % of June sales.
Among the companies, Toyota sales decreased 7.1% YoY to 20,948 units, Mazda sales increased 55.4% to 9,706 units, Hyundai sales decreased 0.5% to 8,215 units, Ford sales increased 55.9% to 7,753 units and Kia sales decreased 11.0% to 7,551 units.
The best-selling cars in June 2023, in order of popularity, were Toyota Hi-Lux, Tesla Model Y and Ford Ranger.

On June 5, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 105,694 units in May 2023 represented an increase 12.0% over the last May.
New vehicle sales of 456,833 units in the first five months of the year represented an 4.3% increase YoY.
Passenger car sales of 18,120 units in May represented a 5.0% increase YoY, SUV sales of 59,011 units represented a 14.7% increase, LCV sales of 23,824 units represented a 10.7% increase and MHCV sales of 4,739 units represented a 14.4% increase.
Electric vehicles accounted for 7.7% of total sales, and YTD EV sales accounted for 7.0% in 2023. Sales of electrified vehicles (EV, hybrid (HV), plug-in hybrid (PHV)) made up 15.6% of market in May.
Among the companies, Toyota sales decreased 19.6% YoY to 18,340 units, Mazda sales increased 30.9% to 8,475 units, Hyundai sales increased 0.2% to 7,078 units, Kia sales decreased 4.2% to 7,000 units and Ford sales increased 19.5% to 6,251 units. MG sales increased 18.8 % to 4,828 units.
The best-selling cars in May 2023, in order of popularity, were Toyota Hi-Lux, Ford Ranger and Tesla Model Y.

Australian new vehicle sales increase 1.3% in April
On May 4, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 82,137 units in April 2023 represented an increase 1.3% over the last April.
New vehicle sales of 351,139 units in the first four months of the year represented a 2.2% increase YoY.
Passenger car sales of 15,191 units in April represented a 1.6% decrease from the same period in 2022, SUV sales of 46,031 units represented an 8.6% increase, LCV sales of 17,060 units represented a 13.1% decrease and MHCV sales of 3,855 units represented a 6.6% increase.
EV accounted for 8% of new car sales, up 1.1% points YoY.
Among the companies, Toyota sales decreased 33.0% to 12,029 units, Mazda sales decreased 6.1% to 6,926 units, Kia sales increased 0.3% to 6,200 units, Hyundai sales increased 3.2% to 5,732 units and Ford sales increased 1.5% to 5,047 units, compared to April 2022.
The best-selling cars in April 2023, in order of popularity, were Ford Ranger, Toyota Hi-Lux and Toyota RAV4.

Australian new vehicle sales decrease 3.9% in March
On April 5, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 97,251 units in March 2023 represented a decrease 3.9% over March 2023.
New vehicle sales of 269,002 units in the first three months of the year represented a 2.5% increase from the same period in 2022.
Passenger car sales of 17,182 units in March represented a 21.9% decrease from the same period in 2022, SUV sales of 53,526 units represented a 5.2% increase, LCV sales of 22,012 units represented a 9.0% decrease and MHCV sales of 4,531 units represented a 9.3% increase.
EV increased 19.5% and PHEV increased 33.3 %.
Among the companies, Toyota sales decreased 39.4% to 13,223 units, Mazda sales decreased 26.7% to 8,243 units, Ford sales increased 52.8% to 6,485 units, Kia sales increased 5.8% to 6,403 units and Mitsubishi sales decreased 34.9% to 5,863 units, compared to March 2022.
Year to date, sales of vehicles sourced from China have increased 70.7 % with 15,124 vehicles sold in March. Japan remains Australia’s largest source of vehicles (25,538). Thailand is our second largest (21,729) and Korea fourth (12,771).
The best-selling cars in March 2023, in order of popularity, were Toyota Hi-Lux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max .

Australian new vehicle sales increase 1.8% in February
On March 3, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 86,878 units in February 2023 represented an increase 1.8% over February 2023.
It recovered from the slump caused by the spread of the coronavirus to the same level as February 2019 (87,102 units).
New vehicle sales of 171,751 units in the first two months of the year represented a 6.5% increase from the same period in 2022.
Passenger car sales of 16,435 units in February represented a 4.8% increase from the same period in 2022, SUV sales of 47,888 units represented a 6.6% increase, LCV sales of 18,750 units represented a 13.6% decrease and MHCV sales of 3,805 units represented a 26.4% increase.
EV, HV and PHV accounted for 12,102 vehicles, 13.9% share.
Among the companies, Toyota sales decreased 31.4% to 14,332 units, Mazda sales decreased 12.7% to 7,667 units, Ford sales increased 30.6% to 6,022 units, Kia sales increased 2.0% to 6,000 units and Hyundai sales decreased 2.6% to 5,504 units, compared to February 2022.
The best-selling cars in February 2023, in order of popularity, were Ford Ranger, Toyota Hi-Lux and Tesla Model 3.

On February 3, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced that new vehicle registrations of 84,873 units in January 2023 represented an increase 11.9% over January 2022.
Passenger car sales of 16,602 units in January represented an 5.5% increase from the same period in 2022, SUV sales of 46,698 units represented an 17.9% increase, LCV sales of 18,546 units represented an 1.6% increase and MHCV sales of 3,027 units represented an 33.3% increase.
