Mexico auto production fell 9.7% in December, 0.6% in all of 2018
Auto plants in Mexico built 237,677 light vehicles during December 2018, representing a 9.7% decline compared to same month in 2017, while the 3,908,139 vehicles built in all of 2018 represent a decline of 0.6% from the previous year, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
However, both figures do not take into account production of Mercedes-Benz, which has been manufacturing A Class sedans at the COMPAS plant since September 2018.
While its not clear how many vehicles Mercedes-Benz builds at COMPAS, HBPO deliveries of approximately 400 front-end modules to the plant each day, six days a week, suggests 10,400 units may be produced monthly.
Given those figures, it is estimated that Mercedes-Benz built 23,980 vehicles in 2018 at COMPAS.
The companies exhibiting production growth in Mexico in 2018 include Kia, reporting production of 294,600 units (33% increase from 2017), followed by Toyota with 191,978 units (27.1% increase), Audi with 173,098 units (9.2% increase), and Mazda with 149,589 units (5.5% increase).
Companies with production declines included Honda with 147,158 units (29.5% decrease largely due to Celaya closure for 4 months), and Ford with 280,499 units (11.1% decrease).
General Motors production increased 3.6% to 834,414 units in 2018, while Nissan production decreased 8.1% to 762,408 units, and FCA production increased 0.1% to 639,022 units.

Mexico auto production declines 1.3% in November, excluding Daimler’s new plant
Global OEMs in Mexico built 344,928 cars and light trucks in November, a 1.3% decline compared to production in the same month of 2017, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
The Inegi data does not include production from Daimler’s new Cooperation Manufacturing Plant Aguascalientes (COMPAS), which started manufacturing Mercedes-Benz A Class sedans in September.
An estimation of 10,400 A Class sedans based on HBPO deliveries of 400 front-end modules to the assembly facility each day, six days a week, would result in a 1.7% increase in production volume in November compared to the same month in 2017.
INEGI data shows that 3,670,462 light vehicles were manufactured in Mexico in the first 11 months of 2018, basically a flat result compared to the 3,668,995 units built in the same period of 2017.
Among OEMs reporting production declines in November compared with the same month in 2017 were Audi (- 1.7%), Mazda (-1.1%), General Motors (-11.0%), FCA (-19.3%) and Honda (-18.1%), which only recently restarted operations at its Celaya plant.
Companies reporting production increases in November were Nissan (+5.4%), Volkswagen (+6.2%), Ford (+11.7%), Toyota (+29.4%) and Kia/Hyundai (+37.9%).
*Since September 2018, we have changed the data source for the sales volume of Mexico.

*There are cases where recently released data and detailed information in the database do not match up for reasons including different information sources, and discrepancies between preliminary reports and confirmed data.
Mexico auto production in October falls 4.8%, exports up 0.8%, says preliminary data
OEMs in Mexico manufactured 363,474 cars and light trucks in October, a decline of 4.8% compared to 381,986 vehicles built in the same month in 2017, according to preliminary data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
Mazda, for unknown reasons, did not provide either its production or exports figures for October to INEGI.
If Mazda production of 13,572 units in October 2017 was used as reference, total production of 377,046 units would represent a figure that is still 1.3% lower than 2017.
Total production in the first ten months of 2018 totaled 3,317,209 vehicles as reported by the INEGI, a 0.1% decline compared to the 3,319,670 units built in the same period of 2017.
If the 13,572 units from Mazda are taken into account, it results in a year-to-date total production of 3,330,781 vehicles, a 0.3% increase.
Among the manufacturers that saw declines in their production during October was Audi (-22.3%), FCA (-6.5%), Honda (-78.1%) and GM (-5.4%).
Manufacturers that increased their output were Ford (+45.1%), Kia (+34.5%), Toyota (+22.8%) and Nissan (+1.7%).
Automakers exported 305,808 vehicles in October, an increase of 0.8% compared to 303,514 units from 2017.
Total exports in the first ten months of 2018 were 2,876,508 vehicles, a 6.8% increase compared to 2,694,518 units in 2017.
However, if Mazda’s 9,551 vehicle figure from October 2017 was calculated in, exports would register a 3.9% increase for October and 7.1% increase in the first ten months of 2017.
