2023 vehicle sales in Thailand down 8.7%, production down 2.2% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), December vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 17.5% year over year to 68,326 units. The negative factors mentioned by the FTI included the increased auto loan rejection rates, especially of pickup trucks, with stringent requirements of financial institutions. Household debt level has already exceeded 90% of the country's GDP. There was also an economic slowdown and a delay in the 2024 fiscal budget. 2023 full year vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 8.7% year over year to 775,780 units.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in 2023, Toyota was down 7.9% to 265,949 units. Isuzu was down 28.5% to 151,935 units and Honda was up 13.9% to 94,336 units. Ford sales were down 16.4% to 36,483 units, and Mitsubishi sales were down 35.2% to 32,668 units. Among Chinese makers, BYD was 30,432 units、MG was up 0.1% to 27,311 units and Neta was 13,836 units.
By body type sales in 2023, passenger cars were up 10.4% year over year to 292,505 units, while commercial vehicles were down 17.3% to 483,275 units. Pickup sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 28.5% to 325,024 units.
The Isuzu D-Max was the bestselling model in 2023 with 127,290 units, followed by Toyota Hilux with 114,585 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 55,527 units, Honda City with 43,262 units and Ford Ranger with 28,848 units.
New vehicle production in December decreased 15.8% to 133,621 units. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports in December contributed 38.2% and 61.8% respectively. In December 2023, production of 1ton pickups witnessed a 21.4% drop YoY amid the decline in local sales of pickups. Moreover, passenger cars production in December also saw a 7.9% drop YoY. The FTI pointed out that this was also attributable to growth in EV imports. In 2023, vehicle production missed the revised target of 1.85 million units as it stood at 1,841,686 units, down 2.2% YoY.
Vehicle exports in December drops 19.1% to 90,305 units. The 2023 vehicle export increased 11.7% to 1,117,539 units valued at THB 720 billion, up 15.3%.
FTI anticipates growth of 3.2% in local car production in 2023 with 1.90 million units (1.15 million units for exports and 750,000 units to be sold locally).

July vehicle sales in Thailand down 8.8%, production up 4.7% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), July vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 8.8% year over year (YoY) to 58,419 units from the same period in 2022. Sales in January-July 2023 reached 464,550 units, slid 5.5% from the same period in 2022. Along with the local economic slowdown, rising household debt, and other negative factors, the strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions, especially for pickup trucks, continued to hamper vehicle sales. FTI said that the new government is expected to launch some support measures that will uplift the auto industry and the overall economy, hence the anticipated brighter outlook for the final quarter of 2023.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in July, Toyota was up 0.7% to 20,421 units. Isuzu was down 27.9% to 11,735 units and Honda was up 4.1% to 7,551 units. Ford sales were down 23.7% to 2,754 units and Mitsubishi sales were down 36.6% to 2,505 units. Chinese brands moved up the sales ranking with MG 6th and BYD 7th position.
By body type, passenger cars were up 17.3% year over year to 22,511 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 19.9% to 35,908 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 26.6% to 24,982 units.
The Isuzu D-Max was the best-selling model (registration base) in July with 8,944 units, followed by Toyota Hilux with 8,811 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 3,337 units, Honda City with 3,069 units and Ford Ranger with 2,144 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in July was 149,709 units, up 4.7% YoY. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports contributed 42.2% and 57.8% respectively. In January-July 2023, vehicle production increased 0.7% to 1,071,221 units.
Vehicle exports in July 2023 were at 108,052 units, up 30.0% YoY. The vehicle export value in July was THB 67.6 billion, up 30.0% year over year. In July, exports to almost every country which are Thailand trading partners improved, except for North America. Vehicle exports in the first 7 months of 2023 reached 636,868 units, up 19.5% YoY.
On July 25, FTI announced that it has revised its projection on local car production in 2023 downward from 1.95 million units to 1.9 million units. The targeted vehicle production for exports stays at 1.05 million units, while production for local sales has been lowered from 900,000 units to 850,000 units. The 4 reasons behind this adjustment are financial institutions’ stringent auto loan conditions, Thailand’s exports of some other products have been declining for several consecutive months, causing many industries to reduce work shifts and overtime, the rising cost of living, and high interest rates and though the sales of EVs continues rising in Thailand, most of them are imported from overseas, not locally produced.

May vehicle sales in Thailand up 0.5%, production up 16.5% (detailed report)
According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), May vehicle sales in Thailand increased 0.5% year over year (YoY) to 65,088 units from the same period in 2022. Sales in January-May 2023 reached 341,691 units, slid 4.9% from the same period in 2022. In addition to the more strictness in auto loan approval process of financial institutions, especially for trucks, amid the rising household debt, the negative factors mentioned by the FTI included the country’s political uncertainty. A spark of hope is expected to follow the formation of a new government, with the new cabinet set to be in place by August.
According to data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT), by maker sales in May, Toyota was down 4.0% to 21,296 units. Isuzu was down 15.6% to 13,281 units and Honda was up 33.0% to 6,697 units. Mitsubishi sales were down 36.3% to 3,005 units and Ford sales were up 31.7% to 2,993 units.
By body type, passenger cars were up 29.4% year over year to 25,985 units. Commercial vehicle sales were down 12.4% to 39,103 units. Pickup truck (including PPV) sales included in the commercial vehicle sales were down 19.2% to 27,323 units.
The Isuzu D-Max was the best-selling model (registration base) in May with 13,120 units, followed by Toyota Hilux with 11,063 units, Toyota Yaris ATIV with 4,572 units, Honda City with 4,379 units and Honda HR-V with 2,547 units. BYD’s ATTO 3 electric SUV remains at 9th with 2,025 units.
The FTI announced that new vehicle production in May was 150,532 units, up 16.5% YoY. Vehicle production for domestic sales and exports contributed 40.4% and 59.6% respectively. In January-May 2023, vehicle production increased 6.7% to 775,955 units.
Vehicle exports in May 2023 were at 86,358 units, up 12.2% YoY. The vehicle export value in May was THB 55.0 billion, up 18.9% year over year. The YoY increase was attributable to a low base (with a more intense semiconductor shortage situation in 2022 amid several crises such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the Shanghai COVID-19 lockdown). In May, exports to almost all countries which are Thailand trading partners improved, except car exports to Australia that were delayed as many of them were found to be contaminated with plant materials (mainly grasses), insects, mud, clay, etc. and must be thoroughly cleaned to meet with the Australia Quarantine Inspection (AQIS) strict standards before exporting. Vehicle exports in the first 5 months of 2023 reached 439,990 units, up 17.1% YoY.
