According to MarkLines Data Center, August vehicle sales in Thailand decreased 38.8% year over year to 42,176 units, hitting the lowest in 15 months, and decreased 19.6% month over month. The drop was attributed to the COVID-19 lockdown from the mid-July to August, causing customers to be more cautious with their spending, as well as car deliveries’ postponement or cancelation. Other negative factors included lacking of some car models due to chips and other parts shortage. January - August sales were up 2.4% to 467,809 units.
By brand sales in August, Toyota was down 42.6% to 12,364 units. Isuzu was down 33.4% to 11,035 units and Honda was down 37.9% to 5,345 units. Mitsubishi sales were down 46.1% to 2,684 units and MG sales were down 20.3% to 2,187 units.

The FTI announced that new vehicle production in August was 104,144 units, the lowest in 13 months, 11.2% decrease from August 2020. Vehicle exports in August were at 59,571 units, the lowest in 4 months, increased 3.8% year over year but down 15.6% month over month. According to FTI, production of some car models was suspended following chips and some parts shortage. Besides, with COVID-19 situation in Asia getting worse, vehicle exports to Asia and Australia/Oceania markets witnessed decline from the same period in 2020. However, as car production plants in some of Thailand’s trading partner countries have already started retuning to operation, Thailand’s exports of engine and other auto parts increased YoY. The vehicle export value in August was THB 35.7 billion, up 3.2% year over year. Vehicle exports from January to August were up 31.9% to 603,650 units.
