Summary

Similar to last year's Shanghai Motor Show, many NEVs (New Energy Vehicle) were exhibited at the Beijing Motor Show 2018, with many state-run and major private automakers, as well as several emerging EV automakers showcasing their vehicles.

The origins of the emerging EV automakers vary, with some companies being established by the founders of IT-related companies, while others have been established by former employees of major OEMs. This report will cover NEVs by some of the notable emerging EV automakers.

NIO: Announcement of the six-seat ES8

NIO, which unveiled its ES8 at the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show and released the model at the end of the same year, announced a six-seat ES8 variant at the Beijing Motor Show. The ES8 is manufactured by Changan Automobile, with which NIO has an outsourced production agreement. NIO has actively established cooperative relationships with major OEMs such as the GAC Group, including a joint venture established for the research and development of NEV intelligent connected cars and component manufacturing. Additionally, in May 2018, the automaker signed a production alliance agreement for its second model, the ES6, with JAC Motor.

 

eve Concept The "eve" is an EV MPV concept car that seats six passengers. The vehicle supports vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, and features a Level 4+ autonomous driving system. Using the NOMI AI system, also featured on the production model ES8, drivers can open and close the doors and operate climate control using voice recognition, as well as remotely manage the vehicle and take photos using a smartphone.

Future Mobility Corporation (FMC): Production facility for the Byton model completed in 2018, new SUV to be released in 2019

The Future Mobility Corporation (FMC), which exhibited at the CES2018 for the first time, also displayed its Byton concept SUV that is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2019. The presentation was conducted by the former lead developer of the BMW i8, and drew considerable attention thanks to his fluent Chinese.

In April 2018, FMC announced that the FAW Group had invested in the OEM. In the future, the two OEMs will accelerate their cooperative structure in relation to product development and production, sales, and services. Additionally, FMC has partnered with CATL and Baidu.



Byton concept The Byton is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2019, and will be assembled at FMC's Nanjing plant that has an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles.
Two variants of the production model are planned. The base model has a maximum output of 200 kW, a maximum torque of 272 hp, a range of 400 km, and a battery capacity of 71 kWh. The variant model has a maximum output of 350 kW, a maximum torque of 476 hp, a range of 520 km, and a battery capacity of 95 kWh.
The Byton supports 5G communications. The Byton Life cloud platform includes features such as information on entertainment, communications, and health management, allowing for drivers to hold on-board teleconferences, manage their schedules, and a feature that links to health-tracking devices.

WM Motor: Exhibition of the EX5 and EX6 SUVs

WM Motor, established in 2015, constructed a plant with an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. At the Beijing Motor Show 2018, the automaker exhibited its new EX5 EV, which it introduced at its product strategy conference on April 20th 2018, as well as the EX5 Pro. Additionally, the automaker exhibited its EX6 concept car and a model designed by German supercar manufacturer Isdera, making it the emerging EV automaker with the most display content at the Beijing show.



EX5 The EX5 is available in three trim levels with different ranges. The motor has a maximum output of 160 kW and a maximum torque of 315 N m, and a range of 600 km (when driving at 60 km/h). Ranges in NEDC mode differs between the three battery types, ranging from≧300 km, ≧400 km, and ≧500 km. Charging takes 42 minutes (30-80% using a quick charger), while a full charge requires 10.7 hours. The vehicle has a length of 4585 mm, a width of 1835 mm, a height of 1672 mm, and a wheelbase of 2703 mm.
The EX5 features a 12.3-inch LCD digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch intelligent display, and a voice recognition system. Information is provided through a personalized ID key.

YUDO AUTO: Announcement of the Π7, a new model featuring a CATL battery cell

YUDO AUTO, which is funded by the Fujian Motor Industry Group, unveiled its third EV model, the Π (Pi) 7. YUDO New Energy Automobile has already released two compact SUV models, and has set its 2018 vehicle sales target at 35,000 vehicles.



π(Pi)7 The Π7 is a family SUV with a longer wheelbase than the Π3, released in March 2018, by 108 mm. The vehicle is scheduled for release in 2019.
The Π7 features Level 3 autonomous driving technology, has a range (NEDC mode) of 400 km, and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 9 seconds. The vehicle also features a CATL high-density battery cell, and supports 4G communications. The Π7 is also equipped with safety features such as automatic parking, adaptive cruise control, and a lane departure prevention system.

Singulato: Unveiling of the is6 connected car

Singulato is a subsidiary of the startup company Zhicheauto Technology, which has production facilities in Tongling, Anhui Province, and Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. At the Beijing Motor Show, Singulato unveiled its is6 SUV. In addition to its global development facility in Suzhou, Singulato also has research and development centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Tongling, Silicon Valley in the U.S., and Utsunomiya in Japan. The OEM plans to establish a sales network of 200 experience-based stores over a three year period, starting from 2018.

The cockpit features a head-up display, with the center of the dashboard embedded with a 15.6-inch LED panel and a 12.3-inch LCD meter panel, which provides a variety of information, such as vehicle information, navigation, and infotainment. Hybrid Kinetic Group: Unveiling of a concept car co-developed with Pininfarina

Similar to the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show, the Hybrid Kinetic Group exhibited its EV models. At the Beijing show, the automaker exhibited its KH GT concept car, which was also exhibited at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, as well as its new concept cars such as the K350 and the H500. The Hybrid Kinetic Group is based in Hong Kong, and in addition to the production of EV passenger vehicles, it is involved in the research, development and design of batteries, battery packs, and motors. In the second half of 2017, the automaker began construction of an environmentally-friendly vehicle plant with a vehicle production capacity of 300,000 units. Additionally, the OEM partnered with the Italian automotive design company Pininfarina in March 2017. Pininfarina will provide support to the Hybrid Kinetic Group for 46 months, support ranging from design concepts, design and development, and verification testing for mass-market production.



HK GT (Concept) The HK GT is a four-seater EV concept sports car jointly developed with Pininfarina, a subsidiary of the Mahindra Group, featuring attention-grabbing gull-wing doors.
The powertrain is comprised of a range extender equipped with a micro turbine, generating a maximum output of 800 kW or more and a range of 1000 km or more. The vehicle accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 2.7 seconds and has a top speed of 350 km/h. The HK GT has an aluminum chassis. The vehicle has a length of 4980 mm, a width of 2000 mm, a height of 1365 mm, and a wheelbase of 2975 mm.

K350 (Concept) The K350 is an EV concept car developed jointly with Pininfarina, a subsidiary of the Mahindra Group, and is the smallest SUV in the Hybrid Kinetic Group's lineup.
The powertrain is composed of a range extender equipped with a micro turbine, with a maximum output of 300 kW or more and a range of 100 km or more. The K350 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h. The vehicle features an aluminum chassis. The vehicle has a length of 4605 mm, a width of 1890 mm, a height of 1640 mm, and a wheelbase of 2750 mm.

H500 (Concept) The H500 is an EV concept car developed jointly with Pininfarina, a subsidiary of the Mahindra Group.
The powertrain is composed of a range extender equipped with a micro turbine, with a maximum output of 300 kW or more and a range of 100 km or more. The H500 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h. The vehicle features an aluminum chassis. The vehicle has a length of 5018 mm, a width of 1940 mm, a height of 1470 mm, and a wheelbase of 3080 mm.

DEARCC: Exhibition of the EV10, an EV model jointly developed with South East Motor

An upgraded version of the EV10 intelligent connected car jointly developed with South East Motor was announced. DEARCC is currently constructing a production facility with an annual production capacity of 180,000 vehicles in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. Phase one of the construction is scheduled to be completed in 2019.

AIWAYS: Exhibitions focusing on concept cars, construction of a plant in Jiangxi Province

AIWAYS was established in February 2017, with a head office located in Shangrao, Jiangxi Province. Although it has only been in business for a short time, it has already signed technical partnership agreements with Bosch and the charging equipment manufacturer Star Charge. Currently, AIWAYS is constructing a plant in Shangrao. At the Beijing show, AIWAYS exhibited its U5 ION concept model, scheduled for release in the second half of 2019, as well as the RG Nathalie sports car, designed by the former head of Audi's motor sports division and the current director of AIWAYS product division, Roland Gumpert.



U5 ION (Concept) AIWAYS unveiled its intelligent EV, developed based on the concepts of science technology and quality innovation. The production model is scheduled for release in the second half of 2019.
The concept features the modular MAS (More Adaptable Structure) intelligent EV platform and implements joining techniques such as FDS (Flow Drill Screw) and SPR (Self Piercing Rivet). Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with Bosch's ESP 9.3 iBooster electric brake booster, which does not require vacuum pressure. The U5 ION features Level 4 autonomous driving technology.

Hanteng: Announcement of EV and PHV versions of existing models

Hanteng Auto is a private automaker established in November 2013 in the economic and technical development zone of Shangrao, Jiangxi Province, and is involved in the research, development, production, and sales of gasoline engine vehicles, NEVs, and automobile-related components. At the Beijing show, in addition to its new gasoline-engine MPV, the automaker exhibited an EV and a PHV.



X5EV The X5EV's motor has a maximum output of 95 kW and a maximum torque of 260 Nm. The vehicle has a range of 252 km or 330 km (driving at 60 km/h), and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 11.9 seconds, with a top speed of 140 km. The X5EV can be charged in 30 minutes (20-80% using a quick charger) or 14 hours for a full charge. The vehicle has a length of 4501 mm, a width of 1820 mm, a height of 1648 mm, and a wheelbase of 2600 mm. It is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2018.
X7PHEV The X7PHEV's powertrain is comprised of a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine, a motor, and a 6-speed DCT. The engine has a maximum output of 125 kW and a maximum torque of 245 Nm. The battery has a maximum output (front) of 15 kW, a maximum torque of 55 Nm, and a capacity of 13.13 kWh to give the X7PHEV an EV range of ≧52 km. The vehicle has a length of 4775 mm, a width of 1902 mm, a height of 1697 mm, and a wheelbase of 2810 mm.

Qiantu: Exhibition of the K50, a sports car scheduled for release

Qiantu Motor, a subsidiary of the automotive design and finished vehicle development solutions supplier CH-Auto Technology, was established in February 2015 in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. In 2016 its EV plant construction project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission. Currently, Qiantu Motor operates a plant in Nanjing with an annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles. At the Beijing show, in addition to concept models, the automaker exhibited its K50 production model.



K50 Qiantu unveiled the prototype model at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show. At the Beijing Motor Show the company exhibited the production model scheduled for release in June 2018. The K50 is a two-seat sports car.

The front and rear motors have a maximum output of 160 kW and a maximum torque of 290 Nm each, allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and achieves a top speed of ≧200 km. The K50's battery capacity is 60 kWh, giving it a range (NEDC mode) of ≧300 km. The vehicle has a length of 4634 mm, a width of 2069 mm, a height of 1253 mm, and a wheelbase of 2650 mm. The body is available in 6 color options.
