Indian Auto Expo 2018: Exhibitions from Tata, Mahindra, and European OEMs
Indian OEMs focus on SUVs and electric mobility
Auto Expo, which is jointly organized by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), ran from February 7th to the 14th at India Expo Mart in Greater Noida. It was held in a 185,000 square meter exhibition hall, and major automakers all set up exhibitions.
This report will focus on concept vehicles and releases from Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and European OEMs. Tata debuted two concept cars, the H5X SUV and the 45X sporty hatchback. Mahindra displayed the G4 Rexton SUV, a rebadged Ssangyong model, and the TUV Stinger concept. The two major Indian companies also exhibited multiple EV models. European OEMs displayed luxury sports cars and EVs, such as the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ, BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, and Renault Trezor EV concept.

Tata debuts H5X and 45X concept cars, shows e-mobility lineup
At the show, Tata Motors demonstrated its capabilities and mobility solutions under the theme of ‘Smart Mobility, Smart Cities'. The automaker showcased a total of 26 integrated mobility solutions at its display.
Tata Motors announced the H5X concept and 45X concept. The company also unveiled its new 'IMPACT 2.0' design language for passenger vehicles, and 'Premium Tough' (a design language that reflects a sense of purpose coupled with strength and quality) for commercial vehicles.
The OEM also showcased the Nexon Aero, Nexon AMT, Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP; and announced the Indian debut of a two-seater, connected sports Coupe – the ‘RACEMO' by TAMO. For e-mobility, Tata Motors displayed the Magic EV, Iris EV, Tiago EV, Tigor EV, and the Racemo EV.
In the commercial vehicles segment, the all-new Tata Intra, a stylish, feature loaded, compact truck that is set to re-define the small commercial vehicle (SCV) segment in the country, was unveiled.

The H5X will be the first SUV to sport the Impact 2.0 design language. It was based on the next generation ‘Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced' Architecture, developed in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover. The architecture is derived from the legendary Land Rover D8 architecture.
The vehicle will offer future ready connectivity and infotainment features. It is packed with outstanding ability, performance, and durability, and has a design that is luxurious yet practical, comfortable yet versatile, and power packed yet easy to drive.

The 45X concept is a dynamic hatchback and the first product developed on the new versatile ‘Agile Light Flexible Advanced' Architecture. The vehicle is intended to reinvent the design of city cars. It has a sporty silhouette and aerodynamic lines that give it a feeling of agility.

The NEXON AERO version is distinctly different from regular NEXON in interior and exterior design. This is one of a number of variants customers will be able to customize according to their personal preference using a soon-to-be introduced, NEXON customization tool. It is powered by a 1.2L Turbocharged REVOTRON engine.
Tata Motor introduces an AMT (automated manual transmission) version of the NEXON. It is powered by a 1.5L Turbocharged Revotorq engine. Along with a convenient automatic gear shift, the NEXON AMT features a manual Tiptronic mode for shifting gears manually. NEXON AMT comes equipped with various smart features like creep function and hill assist to easily negotiate the bumper-to-bumper city traffic.

TIAGO JTP & TIGOR JTP
As a part of Tata Motors' vision to to expand its market, the JTP range of vehicles is aimed at building the company's portfolio with a range of performance and personalized vehicles. JTP is a partnership between Jayem Auto and Tata Motors for developing performance vehicles.
The Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP have been developed to deliver high performance through enhanced power and torque output using the 1.2L turbocharged gasoline engine with a performance-oriented intake and exhaust systems. The engine is mated to a 5 speed manual transmission with optimized gear ratios for superior acceleration and extraordinary performance.
Derived from the TIGOR StyleBack sedan, this vehicle illustrates Tata Motors' shift from the use of internal combustion engines (ICEs). The TIGOR EV will have a single speed, automatic transmission. It is powered by a 3 phase AC induction motor that provides a maximum of 30 kW at 4,500 rpm and a wide, flat torque curve from very low rpm. The motor and the battery combination offers high energy density, low energy consumption, as well as fast charging capability.

Mahindra showcases Rexton SUV and TUV Stinger concept, highlights future electric mobility
Mahindra displayed a suite of unique passenger and mass mobility products, concepts and solutions built around its '3Cs' philosophy of Clean, Connected and Convenient.
The automaker's showcased its entire range of electric vehicles, the widest ever displayed, as well as mobility solutions and concepts from three wheelers to buses. These included the UDO, a stylish 2 seater electric pod concept; the ATOM, a new age urban mobility solution for emerging India; the Treo, a cutting-edge lithium-ion battery powered electric three-wheeler; the e2o NXT, a refreshed version of the e2oPlus hatchback; the eKUV100, India's first electric mini SUV; and the e-Cosmo, the company's new electric bus.
Mahindra also showcased models like Ssangyong Motor's new G4 Rexton and the TUV Stinger, the first Indian convertible SUV.
Mahindra displayed a rebadged Ssangyong G4 Rexton, indicating its intention to strengthen its presence in the premium SUV segment. The SUV will be launched with an all new brand name in India. The Rexton comes with a 7-speed Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission, and its new 2.2L engine delivers 178 bhp and 420 of Nm torque. It has HID headlamps, LED DRLs, an electric sunroof, dual zone automatic climate control, ventilated seats, an 8" touch screen infotainment system with GPS navigation, nine airbags, and an electric parking brake.

The new TUV Stinger concept is the first Indian convertible SUV. It is powered by an engine from Mahindra's iconic mHawk family and delivers 140 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. Designed as an urbane, rugged vehicle, the TUV Stinger radiates confidence and assurance, with the promise of safety and reliability. Its interiors are luxurious, with plush seats, premium design, and a high seating position. The feature-rich infotainment system guarantees on-the-go connectivity.

The UDO is a compact two-seater electric mobility pod concept that was been conceptualized to address issues that plague urban mobility, including traffic congestion and pollution. The UDO is targeted at the tech savvy urban citizen and offers an enclosed architecture with micro climate control, lighting, touch-screen infotainment, and blue-tooth enabled audio systems. Its unique ‘tadpole' construction also eliminates the need to balance the vehicle with one's feet, unlike motorbikes or cycles.
The ATOM is a new age urban mobility concept. It is powered by Mahindra's new electric powertrain, which features batteries that can be swapped to extend the vehicle's range, allowing it to operate uninterrupted for long hours. The ATOM is a key feature of Mahindra's mobility vision for India, giving the country its own, indigenously-built, last-mile urban mobility solution. It is also equipped with an intelligent connectivity system, making bookings and payments seamless and easy.

As India's first electric SUV, the eKUV100 heralds a new generation of EVs. It boasts a range of over 140 km, and fast charging that can extend its range by 80% in less than an hour. The eKUV100 boasts smart phone connectivity, remote diagnostics, cabin pre-cooling, location tracking, and it even monitors driving patterns and battery status. The eKUV100 combines the benefits of an SUV with the unique advantages of an electric vehicle.
The e2o NXT is a refreshed version of the e2oPlus and boasts a modified exterior and interior as well as a larger infotainment system. It is based on the ME+ platform and will be launched next year.
MESMA (Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture)
Mahindra also showed the MESMA (Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture) 380 Volt modular powertrain. It marks a major shift from the current 48/72 V system of Indian EVs. The 380 Volt modular powertrain utilizes e-motors made by TM4 and cells from LG Chem. With its unique build, its length and width can be adjusted to accommodate different kinds of vehicles, while retaining the high efficiency and performance that it promises to deliver. Created at India's first electric vehicle innovation center, the platform opens a plethora of opportunities for Mahindra Electric to forge synergies with Mahindra Group companies such as Ssangyong and Pininfarina amongst others.

European OEMs shows luxury sports cars and EVs
Mercedes-Benz displayed thirteen vehicles at Auto Expo. It launched the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 and the ‘Made in India' BS VI Mercedes-Maybach S 560 in India. It also unveiled the E-Class All-Terrain. The ‘Concept EQ' was a preview of Mercedes-Benz next generation vehicles with battery-electric drives.

All three brands of BMW Group India, BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad, were present at the Auto Expo together for the first time. BMW launched the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and the all-new BMW M5. The next-generation BMW X3 was also displayed along with all-new BMW i8 Roadster and the all-new BMW i3s. MINI launched the next-generation MINI Countryman.

Renault showcased the Zoe, a mini electric car, and the Trezor, a two-seater electric supercar. Renault displayed concept cars by Renault Design Academy India. It also displayed its range of Kwid Super Hero edition vehicles.

Sweden's newest electric carmaker, Uniti, showcased the Uniti One. It also announced its plans to bring a 5-seat version of its EV, which has a single-charge range of approximately 200 km, to the Indian market by 2020. Expo attendees were offered a virtual reality demonstration of the 5-seater along with a hands-on view of the 2-seater, European model.
