The global market for motorcycles (Part 1): India leads global production and sales

A summary of markets in India, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and other ASEAN nations

2016/08/09

Summary

This report presents an overview of major motorcycle producing countries around the world. Part 1 examines developing countries that are major producers including China, India, Indonesia, and Thailand. Part 2 will focus on Brazil, Pakistan, Japan, Europe, and the U.S.

According to Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., global demand for motorcycles in 2015 resulted in sales of 52.64 million units, down 5.4% year-over-year (y/y). This was a result of a double digit decline in sales in China, Indonesia, and Brazil. Sales in China plummeted far below the 10 million units mark with a 14.8% decline y/y to 9.08 million units. Sales in India, the world’s largest market, increased to slightly over 16 million units.

Sales in Indonesia in 2015 marked a significant decline of 15.9% y/y to 6.47 million units due to a sluggish economy and lower incentive for consumers to spend accompanying a weakening in the value of assets. Likewise, sales in Thailand experienced a decline for the third consecutive year in 2015, falling 1.6% y/y to 1.68 million units due to a dwindling economy and increased household debt. Even so, the decrease was slight.

In 2016 Yamaha estimates y/y growth of 1.8% to 53.6 million units (as of February 2016). However, there was a continued decline from January to June in Indonesia and Brazil, where demand was expected to increase, and global demand for motorcycles in 2016 is likely to stay shy of expectations.

Among individual markets, India is expected to register growth of 5.6% to 17 million units, which will support an overall increase in global demand. Indonesia, the third largest market, is expected to record its first increase in three years by growing 3.6% y/y to 6.7 million units. However its sales in the first half of the year declined 6.7% y/y to 2.96 million units. Demand in China is expected to remain weak with a 9.1% y/y decline to 8.25 million units forecast.

India: Leading the world in production and sales in the fiscal 2016; slowing growth

Motorcycle Production in India
Motorcycle production in India in fiscal year 2015 (April 2015 through March 2016) increased by 1.8% y/y to 18.83 million units and surpassed China to make the country the largest producer of motorcycles in the world. However, India recorded its lowest growth rate in eight years.

India kept the top position for motorcycle sales in FY 2015 with growth of 3.0% to 16.46 million units. The slow growth resulted from a decline in motorcycle segment sales (with 12 inch or larger wheels and engine displacement over 75 cc) that account for 60% of India’s total production. Sales growth of scooters was slow at 11.7% but figures surpassed 5 million units to buoy the market.

Hero MotoCorp, which had a joint venture with Honda until 2011, is the largest producer in India. However, in FY 2015 the company experienced a 0.5% y/y decline in production to 6.61 million units. This was a result of sales declining for motorcycles that account for more than 80% of the company's production. Hero MotoCorp’s production share in India declined 0.8 points to 35.1%.

Honda’s local subsidiary in India, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, also experienced a slight 0.8% decline in production to 4.46 million units in FY 2015 because of declining motorcycle sales. The company’s production share was the second highest in India at 23.7% but recorded a decline for the first time in six years.

At the same time, production by Royal Enfield, a smaller manufacturer, rose sharply in FY 2015. The company is a manufacturer of mid-sized motorcycles that has a British origin, and is currently affiliated with Eicher, an Indian manufacturer of commercial vehicles. It is said that Royal Enfield has almost a complete monopoly on the mid-sized motorcycle market in India. The company’s production increased 51.9% to 512,000 units in FY 2015.

China: Production of motorcycles and three-wheelers in fiscal year 2016 declines for fourth year in a row; falls below 20 million unit mark for first time in ten years

Motorcycle Production in China
by Displacement
For motorcycle production numbers, China fell behind India to become the second largest producer in the world. China’s production of motorcycles and three-wheelers in 2015 declined for the fourth year in a row, dropping 11.5% y/y to 18.83 million units, and falling below the 20 million unit mark for the first time since 2005. The rate of decline has also been increasing for two years in row, with production in the first half of 2016 falling 14.4% to 8.16 million units, and no means to stop this state of affairs.

China’s motorcycle production in 2015 declined 12.1% y/y to 16.62 million units, and fell a further 15.2% in the first half of 2016 to 7.16 million units. The full-year result for 2016 is likely to fall short of 15 million units. Negative growth is likely to result from the following factors:

(1) Purchase regulations in urban areas, coupled with a decline in the population of workers in rural areas, who make up the main market for motorcycles, and are leaving home to work in big cities.
(2) The popularity of electric bicycles, which do not require a license or registration, is eating away at the motorcycle market.
(3) A decline in exports, which accounted for nearly half of production volume in 2015 (8.51 million units, down 8.3% y/y).

At the same time, three-wheeler production in 2015 was 2.21 million units, down 6.2% y/y. Production fell 8.6% y/y in the first half of 2016 to 1.01 million units.

Indonesia: Sales in 2015 decline 16% to 6.48 million units due to economic stagnation; 6 million unit level forecast for 2016

Motorcycle Unit Sales in Indonesia
Motorcycle production in 2015 in Indonesia, the third largest producer in the world, declined 16% y/y to 6.63 million units (estimated), while sales declined 17.6% to 6.48 million units. Indonesia’s sales fell below the 7 million unit mark for the first time since the global economic crisis in 2009. This was a result of a sluggish economy and lowering incentive for customers to spend caused by weakening commodity prices. Due in part to the slow sales in home market, motorcycle manufacturers are shifting to exports, which nearly tripled to 150,000 units, and are mainly for Southeast Asian countries

In February 2016 an Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association executive stated that: “There are many concerns for Indonesia's economy in general, including the stagnant economy, weakening asset prices in China, which is a major importer of motorcycles, and the weakening Rupiah. As a result of this, incentive to purchase motorcycles will remain low. The first half of the year will be difficult, and we are placing our hopes in the second half. We expect that full-year sales will be 6.4 million units like last year.”

However, motorcycle sales in the first half of 2016 declined 6.7% y/y to 2.96 million units. This prompted the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association to lower its full-year sales forecast to 6 million units. Moreover, exports increased 75% y/y to 144,000 units during the first half of 2016.

“GO-JEK” is one example of motorcycle taxi ride-hailing services accessible from smartphones that have rapidly gained popularity since 2015. The rise of these services may affect motorcycle sales in Indonesia.

Thailand: Sales in 2015 drop for third consecutive year by 1.6% to 1.67 million units; signs of recovery in 2016

Motorcycle Unit Sales in Thailand
Motorcycle production in Thailand, the fifth largest producer in the world next to Vietnam, saw a double digit decline for two consecutive years in 2013 and 2014. Production including CKD production for exports recovered slightly in 2015 with a 1.8% y/y decline to 2.4 million units.

Registration-based sales in Thailand declined 1.6% to 1.67 million units. Decline has continued for three years running because of a stagnant economy and increased household debt. The motorcycle market in Thailand is expected to reach sales 1.7 million units in 2016 owing to government economic stimulus measures.

Production in the first five months of 2016, including CKD production for exports, saw an 8.4% y/y decline to 988,000 units, while registered sales are showing signs of recovery with an increase of 0.6% to 910,000 units.
