North American International Auto Show 2014: Asian OEMs

Asian automakers display luxury models and state-of-the-art technologies

Summary

 The 2014 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) was held from January 13 through January 26, 2014, with the show being open to the public starting January 18. The public show attracted a total of 803,451 visitors, the first time since 2003 that the show had over 800,000 visitors.

 Perhaps looking to leave a larger impact on the high-performance market, Asian automakers displayed a large number of luxury models. Lexus debuted the RC for the first time in North America, and debuted the RC F globally. Nissan displayed a series of concepts focusing around performance with the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge, the Nissan Sport Sedan Concept, and the Sentra NISMO. Also being shown for the first time was Acura’s TLX Prototype, Subaru’s WRX STI, and Kia’s GT4 Stinger.


 However, an underlying theme of new technology was also prevalent with Asian automakers. Both Toyota and Honda displayed their fuel-cell concept vehicles. Nissan showed its IDx concepts, which were developed using a non-traditional design methodology. Other models featured various advanced driving assist and safety technology, such as the Hyundai Genesis and Kia K900.


 This report is the third of three reports which focus on the vehicles displayed at the 2014 North American International Auto Show. This report will focus on vehicles showcased by Asian OEMs, specifically Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Hyundai/Kia, with less emphasis on Subaru and Mazda. The first two report detailed models from US and European OEMs respectively.

Toyota shows style with FT-1, technology with FCV, luxury with Lexus

 Both Toyota and Lexus had very wide open exhibits, with a significant amount of space given to every model displayed. This provided a very welcoming mood for both marques.

 Making its global debut in Detroit, the FT-1 or Future Toyota 1 is a concept vehicle whose purpose is to evoke a sense of energy, passion and excitement in customers. The FT-1 concept car was developed by Calty Design Research using “function-sculpting” design language. This creates body forms that seem to be sculpted  by the wind. Numerous exterior inlets, ducting and vents help manage airflow around the vehicle. A retractable rear wing further emphasizes its high-performance nature.

 The FT-1 concept car is designed to have the engine located in the front of the vehicle while the cockpit is located further in the back. These design choices improve the FT-1's weight distribution to enhance its RWD capabilities and give the model a sports-car like appearance. A minimalistic interior features an F1 inspired steering wheel and A-pillars that are further set back. This allows the driver to have better cornering vision and to focus entirely on driving.

 

Toyota FCV Concept

 Toyota's FCV concept car represents a culmination of 20 years of research and development in fuel cell technologies. In on-road testing, an engineering prototype of the FCV was able to consistently achieve driving ranges of approximately 300 miles and 0-60 mph acceleration figures of ten seconds. The vehicle can seat up to four passengers, while a complete refueling of the vehicle's hydrogen tanks takes three to five minutes. This stands as a sharp contrast to the time needed to completely charge a plug-in electric vehicle.

 Due to significant reductions in both size and weight, the FCV concept car's dual hydrogen tanks are stored underneath the floor of the vehicle. Its powertrain system is able to sustain a power output of over 100kW. With an external power supply device, a fully-fueled FCV can provide enough energy to power a house for a week.

 Toyota plans to launch a production model FCV in 2015 starting in California.

 

2015 Lexus RC Coupe

 Initially unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, the 2015 Lexus RC coupe made its North American debut in Detroit. Based on the GS platform, the Lexus RC will come with the option of two powertrains. The RC 350 will have a 3.5-liter V6 engine which provides 314 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque and be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The RC 300h, Lexus’ first hybrid coupe, will use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder dual-injection engine with a 105kW electric motor to achieve 176 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque. An electronic continuously variable transmission is featured on the RC 300h.

 The 2015 Lexus RC comes standard in rear-wheel drive with available all-wheel drive. It has a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. The exterior features a new headlamp design and a wider, lower stance. Inside, the Lexus RC contains a dashboard with a 7-inch navigation screen, and a center console with the all-new Remote Touch Interface.

 The 2015 Lexus RC Coupe will be available in the fall of 2014

 The 2015 Lexus RC F made its global debut as the performance version of the Lexus RC coupe. Featuring an all-new 5.0-liter 32-valve V8 engine, the Lexus RC F will have over 450 hp and greater than 383 lb-ft of torque. The engine will be paired with an eight-speed Sports Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission which can reach an estimated top speed of 168 mph. Rear-wheel drive comes standard on the Lexus RC F.

 One of the performance enhancing features in the Lexus RC F is a Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD) system. The TVD system allows the differential to apply varying amounts of power to each wheel while driving. There are three operating modes available in the TVD system: a standard mode which balances performance and stability, a slalom mode for enhanced steering, and a track mode for more stability. Another high performance feature in the Lexus RC F is the independent front and rear coil-spring suspension.

 Taking design cues from the Lexus LFA, the RC F includes features such as a hood air vent, front cooling ducts, and front fender ducts to help cool the engine. An active rear spoiler incorporated into the trunk lid provides additional down force at speeds greater than 50 mph. The interior of the Lexus RC F features an instrument panel that uses combination meters to provide a wide range of accessible information. A elliptical, thick grip steering wheel is another Lexus-first feature that gives the driver greater control.

 The 2015 Lexus RC F, like the Lexus RC, will be available for sale in the fall of 2014.

 

Lexus LF-NX Compact Crossover Concept

 Having debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, the Lexus LF-NX concept on display demonstrated Lexus' focus on the growing compact crossover segment. The Lexus LF-NX concept on display uses a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine, the first Lexus model with a turbo engine.

 The LF-NX concept car is highlighted by two primary styling features. First, a diamond-shaped body flows from the front grille through the belt line projects an image of power. Second, an aggressively shaped spindle grille in the front extends through the lower bumper area, emphasizing the vehicle’s wide stance. On the inside, the center console runs the full length of the cabin and bisects the rear seats. The instrumental panel  is split into an upper display zone and a lower operation zone with various switches and Lexus’ Remote Touch Interface.

 A production version of the Lexus LF-NX concept will reportedly make its debut at the 2014 Geneva Auto Show.

 

 



Nissan displays performance Sport Sedan concept, Q50 Eau Rouge; IDx concepts show new design process

 Nissan's exhibit featured the Sport Sedan Concept and IDx concepts on a circular stage surrounded by a curved seating area. Representatives would give regular presentations of the vehicles on stage, providing a very casual experience which fit well with the all of the concepts on display.

 Winner of the “Best Concept” award at the 2014 North American International Auto Show by Autoweek Magazine, the Nissan Sport Sedan Concept is a design study of a next-generation, sporty style. The Sport Sedan Concept is equipped with front-wheel drive and a 3.5-liter V6 engine capable of producing over 300 hp. Other performance components include a sport-tuned Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission  and a suspension with performance dampers.

 The Nissan Sport Sedan Concept shares three design concepts with the Resonance and Friend-ME concepts that were introduced in 2013: a V-Motion front aspect, a “floating” roof, and boomerang-shaped headlights and taillights. The V-Motion refers to the perception of movement due to the V-shaped lines flowing from the front grille through the hood. Meanwhile, the “floating” roof design gives the impression that the vehicle doesn’t have any pillars, which adds to the sense of openness and lightness. Finally, the boomerang headlights and taillights not only provide a distinctive image, but also focus attention to the vehicle’s center.

 Hints to future production design styles can also be found in the interior of the Sport Sedan Concept. Diamond-shaped graphics on the quilted seats, stitching, and panels provide a sense of depth over traditional flat surfacing. The interior also contains sharply contrasting colors, adding a more modern tone to the vehicle.

 

Nissan IDx Freeflow and IDx NISMO Concepts

 Making their North American debuts in Detroit, the Nissan IDx Freeflow and IDx NISMO represent a new method of vehicle development. Nissan developed both concepts through the design ideas of people born after 1990, or the “digital natives”. There was constant feedback between both parties throughout the entire design process, from the design of the basic framework, to the finishing details. The end design resulted in the simple three-box design seen in both concept models.

 The IDx Freeflow represents a more casual vehicle, meant to combine both function and comfort. The interior of the Freeflow resembles a living room with denim seating. A simple steering wheel, analog clock, and modern-looking speedometer add to the simplistic, yet relaxing feel of the vehicle. At 13.5 feet in length, 5.6 feet in width, and 4.3 feet in height, the IDx Freeflow is a fairly compact vehicle. Fitting with the theme of functionality, possible powertrains proposed for the FreeFlow include a 1.2-liter or 1.5-liter gasoline engine with a continuously variable transmission which would provide a relatively efficient fuel economy.

 On the other hand, the IDx NISMO reflects a sportier vehicle meant for the racetrack. While sharing the same length and height as the Freeflow, the NISMO sports a 5.9 foot width to give it a lower, wider stance. A reverse-slanted nose, side mufflers and aerodynamic spoilers project an image of speed. The materials used also enhance the NISMO’s capabilities, as carbon fiber is heavily integrated into the concept vehicle. One proposed powertrain for the NISMO is a 1.6-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine paired with a continuously  variable transmission with six-speed manual shift mode.

 Nissan has said that at least one of the two concept models would be put into production.

 

Nissan Sentra NISMO Concept

 First debuting at the Los Angeles Auto show, the Sentra NISMO Concept on display is a high-performance version of the 2014 Nissan Sentra. The concept version has a 1.8-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine which produces over 240 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque, an improvement of 110 hp and 110 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is paired with the Sentra NISMO Concept’s more powerful engine. In addition, the concept vehicle is equipped with limited-slip differential and a custom-tuned suspension to enhance performance.

 In order to improve the aerodynamics of the Nissan Sentra, changes were made to the exterior of the vehicle. The Sentra NISMO Concept has a deep front fascia with lower LED lights and a wide lower grille. A wide lower front spoiler, oversized fender flares on the sides of the vehicle and integrated side sills all enhance air flow. Inside, Recaro “Sportster” front seats along with a leather and Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel accentuate the vehicle’s high-performance nature.

 

Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge Concept

 Whereas the Infiniti Q50 is a premium sports sedan, the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge Concept which made its debut in Detroit is meant to be a high-performance sports sedan. Regarding the concept vehicle's performance, Johan de Nysschen, the President of Infiniti, said, "If we built this car I would expect it to feature over 500 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque."

 The exterior of the Q50 Eau Rouge Concept is almost completely redesigned compared to the original. New front and rear fenders widen the vehicle by approximately 0.8 of an inch. A rear spoiler on the trunk of the Q50 Eau Rouge provides additional downforce. Finally, the vehicle's curing hood features dual air vents to improve its cooling characteristics. The interior of the vehicle features a high-grip sports steering wheel and paddle shifters to emphasize its sporty character.

 

 



Honda exhibits Fit, FCEV Concept; Acura showcases TLX Prototype, RLX Sport-Hybrid

 Exemplifying the spirit of the Honda Fit, Honda had a very casual and playful display. However, Honda also featured several tech movies, including one of ASIMO, its humanoid robot. This meshed well with its FCEV Concept on display. Acura's utilized numerous curves in the visual aspect of its display, highlighting its luxurious nature.

 Honda debuted the all-new 2015 Honda Fit as the new benchmark vehicle in the subcompact car class. The 2015 Honda Fit is equipped with a new DOHC Earth Dreams 1.5-liter direct-injection  engine which provides 130 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque. Despite being lighter than the outgoing engine, the new engine supplies 13 more horsepower and 8 lb-ft more torque. With the optional continuously variable transmission, the Honda Fit is expected to have an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 33 mpg city and 41 mpg highway. A six-speed manual transmission is also available as standard equipment.

 As a compact car, the 2015 Honda Fit still emphasizes storage and spacing capabilities. The 2015 Fit’s all-new platform still uses a center-mounted fuel tank and increases passenger volume by 4.9 cubic feet and rear legroom by 4.8 inches over the previous model despite being 1.6 inches shorter  and only 0.3 inches wider. Like its predecessor , the 2015 Fit has rear seats that can be folded down. By folding down the rear seats, the new Fit which provides 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space. Additional standard features include Bluetooth connectivity, a multi-angle rearview camera, and an Expanded View Driver’s Mirror.

 The 2015 Honda Fit will be on sale in the spring of 2014 and will be manufactured in Honda's new assembly plant in Celaya, Mexico, the first Fit that will be built in North America.

 A Honda model which garnered a significant amount of attention from auto show attendees was the Honda FCEV Concept. As a preview to its FCEV production model due to launch in 2015, Honda's FCEV Concept features a sleek styling and an aerodynamic body. The production model will be the world's first vehicle with a fuel-cell powertrain found entirely in the engine compartment. In doing so, the Honda FCEV Concept is able to seat five passengers.

 The Honda FCEV Concept is expected to provide over 100kW in continual output. Compared to the FCX Clarity, Honda's current fuel-cell vehicle, the FCEV Concept's fuel cell stack is smaller by 33 percent. Additionally, the fuel cell stack has a power density of 3kW/L, an increase of 60 percent over the FCX Clarity. These advancements provide a driving range of over 300 miles to the FCEV Concept, with a refueling time of approximately three minutes.

 Honda expects to have a production model ready for launch in the US and Japan in 2015.

 

2015 Acura TLX Prototype Sports Sedan

 Representing a fusion of luxury and performance, the 2015 Acura TLX Prototype was unveiled at the 2014 North American International Auto Show. The TLX Prototype provides a choice of two powertrains. One of the powertrains available is a 2.4-liter I4 direct-injection engine which is paired with an eight-speed dual clutch transmission with a torque converter. Also available is a more powerful 3.5-liter V6 direct-injection engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) cylinder deactivation technology. The 3.5-liter V6 engine is partnered with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Customers can also choose between front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations.

 The 2015 TLX Prototype hosts a wide range of advanced technologies, including Acura Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) and Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS). Another feature in the 2015 TLX Prototype is its Integrated Dynamics System, which provides four driving modes: Economy, Normal, Sport, and Sport+. Based on the selected mode, the Integrated Dynamics System adjusts various systems, including SH-AWD and P-AWS control logic. Other technologies available include Collision Mitigation Braking System and Lane Departure Warning.

 A sculpted hood, low and wide stance, and Acura's Jewel Eye LED headlights emphasize the sporty nature of the TLX Prototype. Additional LED lights fused to the base of the side mirrors provide a glowing effect when the turn signal is activated. On the inside of the vehicle, significant improvements in noise reduction have been made through insulation and electronic Active Noise Control.

 The 2015 Acura TLX Prototype was developed in Acura's design studio in Los Angeles, California and its development center in Raymond Ohio. The production model TLX will launch in the summer of 2014 and will be produced at Acura's manufacturing plant in Marysville, Ohio.

 

2014 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD Sedan

 The 2014 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is an upgrade to the 2014 Acura RLX in both environmental and performance aspects. While it shares the same 3.5-liter V6 engine as the Acura RLX, the RLX Sport Hybrid adds three electric motors to its powertrain. One 35 kW motor is integrated with the seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission, while a 27 kW motor is mounted to each rear wheel. This system is able to provide 377 hp with 273 lb-ft of torque. The RLX Sport Hybrid has a combined fuel economy of 30 mpg, a 25 percent upgrade over the Acura RLX.

 In terms of handling, the RLX Sport Hybrid is the first production hybrid vehicle to come standard with Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). Other new technologies in the 2014 RLX Sport Hybrid include an electronic gear selector, which allows the driver change driving modes at the push of a button, a reactive force pedal, which adjusts the physical feedback a driver receives on the pedal to optimize driving performance, and a head-up display. 

 The 2014 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD will be available for sale in the US in the spring of 2014.

 

 



Mazda presents current Mazda3 while focusing on motorsports

 While displaying the Mazda3, the main attraction in Mazda's exhibit was its diesel-powered prototype racecar. As Mazda was the only OEM team using a diesel engine in the 2014 TUDOR United Sports Car Championship, its display was designed to focus on its racing endeavors. Racing simulators were available for the public to use.

 Though not its main highlight, the 2014 Mazda3, Mazda's best-selling model, was on display. The Mazda3 features a choice of two engines: the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine providing 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque, and the SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine supplying 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. Also featured on the Mazda3 is a package of safety systems under the i-ACTIVSENSE umbrella. Six different trim levels for the Mazda3 are available.

 The 2014 Mazda3 is currently available on sale, and starts at a base price of USD 16,945. Production of the 2014 Mazda3 comes from Hofu, Japan and Salamanca, Mexico.

 

 



Subaru reveals WRX STI as its performance flagship

 Subaru used a very simplistic display, which allowed auto show attendees to focus all of their attention on the debut of the Subaru WRX STI.

 Subaru unveiled its global performance flagship model, the 2015 WRX STI, at the 2014 North American International Auto Show. The all-new WRX STI is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder which produces 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. A new, Aisin-designed six-speed manual transmission is paired with the engine to provide an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.

 Performance-enhancing details are featured throughout the WRX STI. The hood is made from aluminum to reduce the total weight of the vehicle. The body structure of the WRX STI uses more high-tensile steel than its predecessor for a stiff chassis and thus, better handling. Technologies such as Active Torque Vectoring, the Subaru Intelligent Drive powertrain management system, and Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential work with the vehicle's All-Wheel Drive layout to distribute the appropriate amount of power or braking to each wheel.

 The front of the WRX STI combines the grille and bumper cap into a single piece. The LED headlights have also been narrowed, to give the impression of a raptor's stare. A roomier interior was made by extending the wheelbase by one inch. A 3.5-inch LCD instrument panel displays necessary information to the driver, while a 4.3-inch screen on the center console handles a variety of system functions.

 The 2015 Subaru WRX STI will be available in the spring of 2014.

 

 



Hyundai debuts next-generation Genesis; Kia unveils GT4 Stinger concept

 The all-new Hyundai Genesis was the focal point of Hyundai's display, which included a cutaway display of the model, as well as a large circular information board which highlighted the Genesis' many systems. Kia's exhibit was more traditional and understated.

 As the second generation of the vehicle which won the North American Car of the Year in 2009, the 2015 Hyundai Genesis is poised to build on the record sales that Hyundai has achieved for four consecutive years. Two engine options will be available for the 2015 Genesis: a 3.8-liter V6 direct-inject engine that provides 311 hp and 293 lb-ft of torque, and a 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 420 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Both engine options are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

 A new HTRAC all-wheel drive system is available on the 2015 Genesis. This system can be paired with a new Intelligent Drive Mode system that allows drivers to choose between four driving modes based on road conditions. Other safety features include Automatic Emergency Braking and Emergency Steering Support Mode. Driver convenience features include a Head-Up Display, a 9.2-inch infotainment display, and Hyundai's second-generation Blue Link service.

 The all-new 2015 Genesis is the first Hyundai vehicle to use its Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design philosophy. Fluid Sculpture focuses on three design elements: fluid aesthetics, a modern Hyundai look, and a premium ambience. These three characteristics can be seen in the hexagonal front grille and the crease accents on the rear of the vehicle. The interior features 123 cubic feet of space along with various ergonomic improvements to improve the passenger's comfort level.

 Sales for the 2015 Hyundai Genesis will begin in the spring of 2014, with a base price below USD 40,000. The 2015 Genesis will be built at Hyundai's plant in Ulsan, Korea.

 First shown at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, the redesigned 2014 Hyundai Elantra was on display in Detroit. The 2014 Elantra offers a variety of features spread over three trim levels. The base level Elantra SE has a 1.8-liter I4 engine which provides 145 hp and 130 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand the Elantra Sport and Elantra Limited models use a 2.0-liter direct-inject I4 engine which produces 173 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque. All models come standard with six-speed manual transmission with an available six-speed automatic transmission.

 Changes to the previous version of the Elantra include alterations to the front and rear styling, specifically to the fascia. The interior of the Elantra has had slight ergonomic changes to the vents, controls, and armrests. Cabin noise has been reduced with the use of new materials throughout the entire vehicle. Finally, a Driver Selectable Steering Mode allows drivers to change the Elantra's driving characteristics based on personal preferences and road conditions.

 The 2014 Hyundai Elantra is currently available for sale starting at USD 17,200 for the base Elantra SE trim level. The 2014 Elantra is built in Hyundai's plant in Montgomery, Alabama.

 

Kia GT4 Stinger Concept

 The global debut of the Kia GT4 Stinger Concept demonstrated a design study meant to explore the potential of a high-performance sports car. The GT4 Stinger measures 169.7 inches in length, 74.4 inches in width, and 49.2 inches in height with a wheelbase of 103.1 inches. A 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-inject four-cylinder engine delivers 315 hp and is paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

 On the front, the signature Kia grille is located close to the ground to improve engine cooling capabilities. Vertical LED headlights surround the grille while cooling-vents are molded into the bumper for the front brakes. Transparent A-pillars provide the driver with a clearer view while also giving the appearance of a floating roof. LED taillights located above dual exhaust ports round out the concept's appearance. The interior of the GT4 Stinger further highlights the vehicle's practicality. The presence of pull straps instead of door handles, the lack of carpeting or an audio system, and the D-shaped steering wheel all suggest that the GT4 Stinger is meant for racing.

 The Kia GT4 Stinger Concept was developed by Kia's design team in Irvine, California, who also designed the Track'ster concept that was shown in the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. Kia will allegedly have a production version of the GT4 available some time in 2014.

 

2015 Kia K900 Luxury Sedan

 Having made its debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2015 Kia K900 serves as Kia’s new flagship model. Two K900 models are available, each with their own engine. A 3.8-liter V6 engine produces 311 hp, the most of any V6 in the Kia model lineup. The other model uses a 5.0-liter V8 engine which provides 420 hp and is the first Kia Sedan with a V8 engine. Both models are linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission and have a rear-wheel drive configuration.

 Standard options available for both models include an infotainment system with a 9.2-inch display, front and rear cameras, and front and rear parking sensors. Safety technologies standard for both models include Traction Control System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, and Hill-start Assist Control. The K900 V8 model also has an available VIP package which adds features such as advanced smart cruise control and power reclining rear seats.

 The 2015 Kia K900 is expected to be available in the spring of 2014 and will be built in Kia’s plant in Sohari, South Korea. The V8 model will start at USD 60,400 while pricing data has not yet been released on the base model.
