Introduction
Drive motors for electric vehicles (EVs) and generators (motor generators) for hybrid vehicles (HVs) are essential components for the latest EVs and HVs. Traction motors convert electrical energy into mechanical power to propel vehicles. They play a key role in the transition to cleaner, more efficient forms of energy for mobility. In EVs, the power to the drive motor is supplied solely by the batteries, achieving zero-emission driving. In addition, hybrid vehicle generators that combine an internal combustion engine and a motor are used in HVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs), contributing to improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
This report focuses on motors with a maximum output of 10kW or more and an operating voltage of 48V or more. This does not include alternators, which are located at the front of the engine and used as starters along with the belt-driven accessories.
