BEV Sales Continue to Rise; Electrification Strategies Vary by Region
Electrified Vehicle (xEV) Sales Monthly Report (August 2026)
At 41%, xEV share continues to rise; BEVs saw a significant increase of over 100% y/y in Japan, France, and Thailand
In August, electrified vehicle (xEV) sales in 12 major countries and 3 Nordic countries (15 countries in total) increased by 1.2% year-over-year (y/y) but decreased by 1.2% month-over-month (m/m) to 1.963 million units, accounting for 41.2% of total automobile sales.
Amid persistently high fuel prices, electrified vehicle powertrains are diversifying to suit the market conditions in each region. In China, battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales are increasing further with advancements in battery and electric powertrain technology. In Europe, sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are also increasing, partly due to the high tariffs imposed on Chinese-made BEVs. In the United States, the market share of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) is on an upward trend.
Across all 15 countries, BEV sales increased by 6.1% y/y (up 4.4% m/m) to 1.088 million units, representing a 22.8% share of the new vehicle market. Brazil, Japan, France, and Thailand, in particular, recorded significant sales increases of over 100% compared to the same month last year. In addition to persistently high fuel prices, several other factors, including EV policies in various countries, are providing a tailwind for the market. HEV sales increased by 15.5% y/y but fell 9.7% m/m to 470,000 units, representing a market share of 9.9%. In addition to steady growth in Japan, sales are also increasing in the United States and various European countries. PHEV sales were down 20.2% y/y (down 4.4% m/m) to 405,000 units. While sales are increasing in countries such as Brazil, Italy, and the UK, the decrease in China continues to outweigh increases elsewhere.
Cumulative sales of electrified vehicles (xEVs) from January to August totaled 14.578 million units, a slight increase compared to the same period last year, marking the second consecutive month of growth, albeit modest. Sales of xEVs account for 36.9% of total new vehicle sales in the period. The breakdown is as follows: BEVs accounted for 7.430 million units (18.8% share), PHEVs for 3.090 million units (7.8% share), and HEVs for 4.057 million units (10.3% share).
