Sales of electric vehicles in the 12 major countries and the 3 Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden, and Finland (15 countries in total) reached 1.783 million units in October. The sales volume decreased 4.3% compared to the previous month (m/m), but increased 10.5% compared to the same month in the previous year (y/y). The market share of electric vehicles in October was 30.4%, down 1.2 points m/m, and up by 2.5 points y/y. 2025 cumulative sales of electric vehicles in the January through October period increased 22.9% y/y to 14.49 million units, accounting for 26.9% of total vehicle sales volume.

HV (Hybrid vehicle) sales totaled 433,000 units in October, down 9.7% m/m, and also down 8.7% y/y. In October, the HV market share was 7.4%, down 0.7 points from the previous month and down 0.8 points from the same month last year. Cumulative HV sales for the 2025 January to October period increased 13.3% y/y to 4.541 million units, accounting for 8.4% of total vehicle sales volume.

Electric vehicle sales volume in October fell compared to the previous month, but increased compared to the same month last year, although growth slowed. EV sales in the U.S. in particular fell sharply, due to the expiration of the federal EV tax credit of up to USD 7,500 at the end of September.

At the U.S.-China summit held at the end of October, it was decided to reduce additional tariffs on both sides, and agreements were also reached that affect the entire automotive industry, such as easing restrictions on rare earth exports from China and taking measures to resume semiconductor exports from the China division of Dutch semiconductor manufacturer Nexperia B.V. (Nexperia). Supply chain risks are affecting manufacturers’ production, and there are concerns that this will have an impact on the supply of electric vehicles.
