Sales of electric vehicles in the 12 major countries and the 3 Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden, and Finland (15 countries in total) totaled 1.392 million units in July, showing a 6.8% decrease compared to the previous month, but an 18.5% increase compared to the same month last year. The market share of electric vehicles in July was 26.8%, up 2.8 points year-over-year (y/y), but down by 0.6 points month-over-month (m/m). 2025 cumulative sales of electric vehicles from January through July increased 25.9% y/y to 9.233 million units, accounting for 25.1% of total vehicle sales volume.
HV sales totaled 409,000 units in July, down 11.3% from the previous month but up 0.2% y/y. The market share of HVs (hybrid electric vehicles) in July was 7.9%, down 0.6 points m/m and down 0.4 points y/y. Cumulative HV sales for the 2025 January to July period increased 17.8% y/y to 3.178 million units, accounting for 8.6% of total vehicle sales volume.
Regarding additional U.S tariffs on the automobile sector, progress has been made in reaching agreements with the EU, Japan, and South Korea but there are many uncertainties regarding their implementation. For the UK, which reached an agreement with the U.S. earlier, it took about a month and a half for a presidential executive order to be issued to reduce additional tariffs, so it is expected that this will take a considerable amount of time for these other countries.
On August 19, the United States announced that it would expand the list of items subject to additional tariffs on steel and aluminum. An additional 50% tariff will be imposed on 407 items, including automotive parts such as automotive exhaust system parts and electrical steel sheets for electric vehicles. President Trump has also mentioned imposing tariffs of approximately 100% on semiconductor imports, and it is expected that measures having a major impact on the automotive industry will continue in the future.
