Motorcycle sales in India and China exceed 19M units; new EV models continue to be introduced

Summary

  This report summarizes production and sales volumes of motorcycles (motorcycles, scooters, etc.) around the world, and provides an overview of major motorcycle producing countries such as India, China, and ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

  In 2024, total motorcycle production in the world's major countries exceeded the 60 million-unit level (estimated from the statistics of each country). Global demand for motorcycles in 2024 increased by 10.0% year-over-year (y/y) to 54.32 million units (Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. data). Sales in Asia (excluding Japan) grew 9.0% to 39.04 million units, accounting for 71.9% of total demand.

  India's motorcycle production grew 11.3% y/y to 23.88 million units, while sales volumes rose 9.1% to 19.6 million units, marking the third consecutive year of growth. Sales of electric motorcycles totaled 1.211 million units, up 17.3% y/y. Suzuki and Honda are building new motorcycle production lines and plants in India. Honda has opened a research and development center in Bengaluru as electrification accelerates in India.

  China's motorcycle production and sales volumes (including exports) totaled 19.97 million and 19.92 million units, respectively. Sales of electric motorcycles have been on a downward trend since 2021, with a sales volume of 3.467 million units in 2024. Yadea (Yadea Technology Group Co., Ltd.), an electric motorcycle manufacturer, is expanding its overseas operations, especially in Southeast Asia.

  India and ASEAN countries are promoting the use of electric motorcycles to combat air pollution. In Japan, exhaust emission regulations for motorcycles were tightened from November 2025, with production of mopeds under 50cc ending at the end of October. Motorcycles over 50cc are subject to EURO 5 equivalent regulations and are required to be fitted with OBD II (on-board diagnostic) equipment. Japanese manufacturers (Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (Honda), Yamaha Corporation (Yamaha), Suzuki Motor Corporation (Suzuki), and Kawasaki Co., Ltd. (Kawasaki)) are developing and launching new models to meet electrification trends and environmental regulations in various countries and regions.
