Toward Actual Implementation of Level 4 Autonomous Driving for Commercial Vehicles

Demonstration and commercial operation in Japan; public support for development and infrastructure

Summary

The social implementation of Level 4 autonomous driving (hereinafter referred to as L4) for commercial vehicles is being accelerated, with a target deployment date of 2027, to address the immediate issue of stagnation in logistics and human transportation. For this reason, external support is being received from various sectors, not only for technology development but also for infrastructure construction and the provision of evaluation facilities.

This report outlines the current state of external support, primarily from the public, as well as the latest technologies, notably L4 commercial vehicles that have been in demonstration / commercial operation services since the beginning of this year.

To support the development of autonomous vehicles, the Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI) is enhancing the capabilities of its Special Environment Proving Ground (see photo). Hazardous on-road, adverse weather testing is possible within the 200m-long facility, which is used by start-ups to test heavy-duty trucks. Many L4 field tests of trucks and buses have been attempted in various locations. In particular, priority road testing of trucks has been conducted on the Shin-Tomei Expressway, and testing of L4 commercial operation of buses has been performed on Hitachi City's bus routes (photo).
