VW Group: Partnership with Rivian and XPeng for SDV Development

  In November 2024, Volkswagen AG (VW) and Rivian Automotive, Inc. (Rivian), an emerging U.S. EV manufacturer, established a joint venture company, Rivian and VW Group Technology, LLC. VW will invest USD 5.8 billion to support Rivian for the development of the electrical architecture and software for the next generation of SDVs (Software Defined Vehicles). The company also announced plans for its E/E (Electrical/Electronic) architecture to be introduced in the second half of the 2020s and corresponding software.

  In April 2024, VW Group announced its strategy for transforming its China business, aiming for sales of 4 million vehicles and equity-method profit of EUR 3 billion by 2030. VW also announced that it will develop the China Electrical Architecture (CEA) for installation in Intelligent Connected Vehicles (ICV) for China in collaboration with emerging EV manufacturer Guangzhou Xiaopeng Motors Technology Co., Ltd. (XPeng).

  In early September 2024, Volkswagen's management presented a restructuring plan to the IG Metall trade union that included the closure of three plants in Germany, and in early December the trade union went on a timed strike. Although the closure of the domestic plants in Germany was not decided, the agreement was concluded with conditions including a reduction in production capacity of 734,000 units and elimination of 35,000 employees.
