According to a report by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), Chinese auto exports in the first three quarters (January through September) of 2024 grew 27.3% year-over-year (y/y) to 4.312 million units. In particular, the number of exported passenger cars increased by 28.0% over the previous year to 3.633 million units. This report focuses on the recent overseas trends of Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. (Chery) and Chang'an Automobile Co., Ltd. (Changan), two of the Chinese automakers with the highest export volumes.
According to an announcement by Chery Holding Group Co., Ltd., its export volume in 2023 was 937,000 units, and the export volume of its Chinese brand passenger cars has been ranked first for 21 consecutive years. According to data from CAAM, Chery's export volume in September 2024 increased by 20.7% compared to the same month last year, reaching 109,000 units, accounting for 20.2% of the total export volume for the month. Chery is actively engaged in developing markets outside China, having already established 18 KD plants and 6 development sites around the world. Additionally, its sales network extends to over 80 countries and regions.
In 2023, Changan announced its overseas strategy "Vast Ocean Plan," which aims to accelerate the expansion of products and production capacity, as well as strengthen brand, marketing services, organization, and human resource development. Under the plan, the company aims to enter over 90% of global markets by 2030 and establish more than 20 local marketing organizations. At the same time, Changan is investing CNY 4 billion in Thailand to establish production facilities for right-hand drive vehicles, to cover right-hand drive vehicle markets such as Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and South Africa. In addition, the company is planning to prepare for entry into the European market with the aim to achieve sales exceeding 300,000 units in Europe by 2030.
