IAA Mobility 2023: Electric Drive Solutions
X-in-1 eAxles, thermal management systems, inverters for 800V applications
Summary
This year's IAA Mobility took place September 5 to 10 in Munich, and the event was held both at the exhibition grounds (high entrance fee) and at the Open Space venue in downtown Munich (open to the general public free of charge.). The theme of IAA Mobility 2023, the international mobility trade fair, is "Experience Connected Mobility," which extends beyond innovations only in the automotive sector to include mobility as a whole. With the goal of a connected and sustainable future of mobility, the event was a clear demonstration that the traditional automotive industry is changing. There were over 300 world premieres and innovations, 750 exhibitors from 38 countries, and over 500,000 visitors. Especially as many as 100,000 people visited the Open Space on Saturday, September 9.
At the exhibition grounds, the supplier presence was greater than ever before. At this year's IAA Mobility event, there was a noticeable focus by suppliers on 800V technologies. With the rapid growth of the electric vehicle market, the development of electric drive solutions that can be installed in a wide range of applications is gaining momentum. This report introduces the "X-in-1" electric axle (eAxle), which Chinese OEMs are taking the lead in bringing to market, advanced thermal management systems for extended range, and inverters for 800V applications.
Incidentally, the BYD Seal, which made its European debut at IAA, is equipped with an 8-in-1 eAxle (i.e., inverter, reducer, drive motor, DC/DC converter, on-board charger (OBC), battery management system (BMS), power distribution unit (PDU), and vehicle controller (VCU)).
