With the Dieselgate scandal affecting public perception on vehicle emissions, European automakers have made a concerted effort in developing and adding electric vehicles to their lineup. The three largest German OEMs in Daimler, Volkswagen and BMW have similar strategies in that all three have formed a separate brand focused on advanced electric vehicles. Mercedes-Benz has developed the EQ family, beginning with the EQ concept unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Production of the family's first model, the EQC battery electric compact SUV, will begin in 2019. Volkswagen has showcased a number of ID. electric concepts in recent years, beginning with the Volkswagen I.D. concept introduced at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. A number of the concepts previously shown are expected to be converted into production models in the future. BMW will expand its BMW i electric vehicle sub-brand that it first showcased with the i3 battery electric subcompact hatchback which debuted in 2013.
This report is the second in a series of reports which provides an overview of the current and future electrification strategies of various OEMs. This report focuses on major German OEMs, specifically Daimler, Volkswagen and BMW. The report includes timelines for the three OEMs showing past and future electric vehicle launches. A report highlighting the electrification strategies of U.S. OEMs was previously released, while additional reports on the strategies of Asian and other OEMs will be released in the future.
