Sales of electric vehicles in the 12 major countries and the 3 Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden, and Finland (15 countries in total) totaled 1.861 million units in September, showing a 21.7% increase over the previous month (m/m), and a significant 22.8% increase compared to the same month last year (y/y). This was a new record high, surpassing the 1.816 million units recorded in December last year. The market share of electric vehicles in September was 31.6%, up 3.8 points y/y, and up by 2.1 points m/m. Cumulative sales of electric vehicles in the 2025 January through September period increased 24.8% y/y to 12.705 million units, accounting for 26.5% of total vehicle sales volume.
HV sales totaled 445,000 units in September, up 8.9% from the previous month but down 1.9% y/y. The market share of HVs in September was 7.5%, down 0.4 points m/m and down 0.8 points y/y. Cumulative HV sales for the 2025 January to September period increased 15.2% y/y to 4.071 million units, accounting for 8.5% of total vehicle sales volume.
In China, new car launches continue thanks to government support measures that support car replacement purchases, and the strong performance is expected to continue through the end of the year. In the U.S., there was a rush to buy before the end of the federal tax credit for EVs at the end of September. In the U.K., the number plate switch led to an increase in overall new car sales, as in previous years in September.
In addition to developments in various countries regarding additional U.S. tariffs and China's restrictions on rare earth exports, we will continue to closely monitor the changes in preferential treatment for electric vehicles in major markets.
