Across the world, policies are being implemented to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles on the road. In March 2019, the European Parliament agreed on CO2 emission standards for new cars after 2020. In July 2019, Ford, Volkswagen, BMW and Honda reached an agreement with California for increased fuel economy standards and reduced greenhouse gas emissions compared to U.S. federal standards. OEMs are aiming to achieve these standards by accelerating the development and deployment of electric vehicles.
Tesla is focused on expanding production of the Model 3, as it aims to achieve an annualized production rate of 500,000 units by the second quarter of 2020. In contrast, the Detroit Three are expanding their lineups with a variety of electric vehicles. GM aims to launch at least 20 fully electric vehicles by 2023. Ford aims to have at least 40 electrified models, including 16 fully electric vehicles by 2022. In a 2018 presentation, FCA announced that it would have more than 30 electrified models by 2022.
This report is the first of three reports which provides an overview on the current and future electrification strategies of various OEMs. Timelines for individual OEMs highlighting past and future electric vehicle launches are included in the report. This report focuses on U.S. OEMs, specifically Tesla, GM, Ford and FCA. Future reports will describe the plans of European and Asian OEMs.
