Summary
MarkLines Co., Ltd. (MarkLines) purchased a top-of-the-line BYD Yangwang U8 (base price approx. JPY 23 million), BYD Auto Co. Ltd.'s entry into the large off-road vehicle market as part of an effort to expand its product lineup. MarkLines will conduct a vehicle teardown survey in August 2024 at our newly established MarkLines Benchmark Center in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture.
The Yangwang U8 debuted at the Guangzhou Motor Show in January 2023, and sales began in the Chinese market three months later, in April. It was also exhibited at the Japan Mobility Show in October of the same year, where it attracted attention for its powerful off-road capabilities, such as its ability to perform super-tight turns (tank turns) using four in-wheel motors to change direction on the spot, and its ability to navigate in water up to one meter deep for short periods of time.

The HMI (human-machine interface) design is simple and luxurious, with a curved center display integrated with the instrument panel and large displays installed at the driver's and front passenger seats, with a minimal number of hard switches, befitting a new generation luxury SUV.
This report presents the results of a pre-teardown survey of the Yangwang U8's HMI technology. Although there are some issues with regard to operability and visibility, overall it is clear that this is a well-thought-out and attractive HMI for a luxury SUV that boasts off-road capabilities.
In addition, MarkLines also plans to separately scan the vehicle and parts, convert them into CAD data, and sell the parts after disassembly.
