Indian vehicle sales down 2.1% in December 2016
Sales in December 2016 were down by 2.1% y/y to 281,790 units versus 287,799 units in December 2015. PVs (passenger vehicle, UV and van) sales were down 1.4% y/y to 227,824 units. CVs (M&HCVs and LCVs) sales were down 5.1% y/y to 53,966 units.

Among automakers, Maruti-Suzuki was down 4.4% and Hyundai was down 4.3%. Tata Motors was up 1% and Mahindra sales were down 1.5% in December 2016.

Passenger and commercial vehicle sales were influenced by weak rural demand, short term effects of demonetization, and rising fuel prices which leads to reduced and postponed purchase decisions. However, it is expected that there will be a gradual pick-up in demand starting in the next few months due to implementation of GST, Budget announcement, and reduced inflation and interest rates. Sales of commercial vehicles are expected to increase due to pre-buying of BS III norms trucks.

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam), total vehicle sales increased by 5.0% y/y to 296,513 units.
PVs (Passenger cars, UVs, and Vans) were up 1.7% to 234,154 units. CVs (M&HCVs and LCVs) were up 19.9% to 62,359 units.
By vehicle type, passenger cars were down 4.2% from a year ago to 164,469 units. UVs were up 20.7% to 54,089 units, and Vans were up 13.3% to 15,596 units. M&HCVs were up 34.3% to 29,035 units and LCVs were up 9.7% to 33,324 units.
The loss in production due to protests in Haryana, ban on registration of bigger engine diesel passenger vehicles in the NCR region and weak consumer sentiment led to a decline in passenger car sales. However, utility vehicle and commercial vehicle sales were strong.
By automaker sales, Maruti-Suzuki was up 0.2%. Tata was up 7.5% and Hyundai was also up 9.1%.
Siam originally projected that passenger vehicle sales will grow between 8% and 12% in the next fiscal year starting 1 April. But Siam decreased this forecast by 1% due to the introduction of infrastructure cess (1-4%) from April.

Indian vehicle sales up 3.7% in January
According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam), total vehicle sales increased by 3.7% y/y to 293,699 units.
PVs (Passenger cars, UVs, and Vans) were up 0.6% to 232,016 units. CVs (M&HCVs and LCVs) were up 17.5% to 61,683 units.
By vehicle type, passenger cars were down 0.7% from a year ago to 168,303 units. UVs were up 3.4% to 50,122 units, and Vans were up 7.5% to 13,591 units. M&HCVs were up 33.6% to 28,533 units and LCVs were up 6.5% to 33,150 units.
The decline in car sales was partly due to buyers advancing purchases to December to take advantage of year-end discounts and freebies. Siam said auto makers were seeking to clear inventory in December through attractive discounts.
Sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles, which reflect demand in the economy, were strong indicating a revival on the infrastructure front.
By automaker sales, Maruti-Suzuki was up 0.8%. Tata was up 7.2% and Hyundai was also up 9.3%.
Siam projected that passenger vehicle sales will grow between 8% and 12% in the next fiscal year starting 1 April, and hoped for a rebound in rural markets. Going forward, an increase in rural demand is critical for sustainable growth in the auto industry. The upcoming budget is expected to address the issue.
