Italian passenger car sales up 6.2% in January 2026, FIAT sales up 20%, Chinese brands also performing well
On February 2, the Italian automobile manufacturers association (ANFIA) announced that passenger car registrations of 141,980 units in January increased 6.2% over the same month in 2025.
In January, Fiat registrations increased 20.5% (13.5% market share), Toyota registrations increased 0.2% (7.1% share), Volkswagen registrations increased 3.0% (6.2% share), Peugeot registrations decreased 2.0% (5.0% share), and Audi registrations increased 2.6% (4.9% share) from a year ago.
The best-selling cars in January, in order of popularity, were the Fiat Panda, Jeep Avenger, Citroen C3, Fiat Grande Panda and Toyota Aygo X.
The foreign car distributors association (UNRAE) announced that gasoline-powered passenger car sales in January decreased 25.4% y/y to 26,806 units (18.7% share), diesel passenger car sales decreased 16.6% to 10,490 units (7.3% share), hybrid car (HV) sales increased 23.7% to 74,742 units (52.1% share), plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) and REx combined sales increased 152.0% to 12,502 units (8.7% share), and electric vehicle (BEV) sales increased 40.6% to 9,446 units (6.6% share).
