China vehicle production and sales decline 79.8% and 79.1% respectively in February
On March 12, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of February, 2020. Production and sales in February suffered substantial decreases due to the impact of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak. Low production levels was a result of automakers’ postponed work resumption and supply shortage of automotive parts. Sales were affected by weak consumption performance as market demands were largely restrained. February production and sales will have a significant impact on the performance of the automotive market in the first half of 2020.
Overall vehicle production in February totaled 285,000 units, reflecting a 79.8% year-over-year (y/y) decrease, while sales totaled 310,000 units, reflecting a 79.1% y/y decline. YTD (year-to-date) production for January through February totaled 2.048 million units with a 45.8% decline compared to the same period in the previous year, while sales YTD were 2.238 million units, reflecting a 42.0% y/y decline.
February passenger car production reached 195,000 units, reflecting a decrease of 82.9% compared to February of last year. Sales of passenger vehicles totaled 224,000 units, reflecting an 81.7% y/y decline.
Among commercial vehicles, production in February totaled 89,000 units, reflecting a 66.9% y/y decrease. Commercial vehicle sales were 86,000 units, reflecting a 67.1% y/y decrease.
New energy vehicles (NEVs) production reached 9,951 units, reflecting a decrease of 82.9% y/y, while sales reached 12,908 units, reflecting a decrease of 75.2% y/y. Among NEVs, BEV (battery electric vehicle) production was 8,342 units, reflecting an 80.5% y/y decrease, while sales were 10,680 units, reflecting a 72.6% y/y decrease. Plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) production was 1,609 units, reflecting an 89.5% y/y decrease, while sales were 2,228 units, reflecting an 82.9% y/y decrease. Fuel cell vehicles (FCV) have no production and sales in February.
Overall vehicle exports in February totaled 45,000 units, reflecting a 22.0% y/y decrease. Passenger car exports totaled 35,000 units, reflecting a 4.3% y/y decrease. Commercial vehicle exports totaled 10,000 units, reflecting a 52.4% y/y decline.

China vehicle production and sales decline 25.4% and 18.7% in January
On February 26, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the month of January, 2020.
Overall vehicle production in January totaled 1.767 million units, reflecting a 25.4% year-over-year (y/y) decline, while sales totaled 1.927 million units, reflecting an 18.7% y/y decline.
January passenger car production reached 1.436 million units, reflecting a decline of 28.1% compared to January of last year. Sales of passenger vehicles totaled 1.607 million units, reflecting a 20.6% y/y decline. Production and sales of the four major passenger vehicle segments (sedan, MPV, SUV and minivan) reflected obvious month-over-month (m/m) and y/y declines.
Among commercial vehicles, production in January totaled 331,000 units, reflecting a 10.5% y/y decline. Commercial vehicle sales were 320,000 units, reflecting a 7.5% y/y decline. As two major commercial vehicle segments, production and sales of trucks and buses both reflected dramatic m/m and y/y declines, with the decrease rates of buses being even higher.
According to CAAM’s analysis, the m/m and y/y declines of vehicle production and sales in January can be attributed to the partial release of consumption demands in December 2019 and the fact that January has fewer workdays than in previous years as the month includes the Spring Festival vacation. Impact of the novel coronavirus outbreak on the automotive market will become more apparent after February, which is expected to reflect higher decline rates in vehicle production and sales than in January.
