China’s February vehicle production, sales volumes decrease by 20.5% y/y, 15.2% y/y, respectively
On March 11, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced China’s vehicle production and sales results for February 2026.
According to the CAAM, as the 2026 Spring Festival holiday fell on mid-to-late February and lasted longer than previous years, effective working days in February amounted to only 16 days, which had certain impact on automakers’ production and operating activities and led overall market heat to decline. Judging from the automotive industry’s operation situation during January and February, production and sales were impacted by multiple factors, both dropping year-over-year (y/y). The passenger vehicle (PV) and New Energy Vehicle (NEV) markets weakened, the commercial vehicle (CV) market strengthened further, and exports grew rapidly.
In February, vehicle production and sales volumes were 1.672 million units and 1.805 million units, down 20.5% y/y and 15.2% y/y, respectively. Domestic sales and exports accounted for 1.133 million units and 672,000 units, down 32.9% y/y and up 52.4% y/y, respectively.
Year-to-date (YTD) production and sales volumes were 4.122 million units and 4.152 million units, down 9.5% y/y and 8.8% y/y, respectively. Domestic sales and exports accounted for 2.799 million units and 1.352 million units, down 23.1% y/y and up 48.4% y/y, respectively.
In February, PV production and sales volumes totaled 1.400 million units and 1.536 million units, down 21.6% y/y and 15.4% y/y, respectively; and CV production and sales volumes totaled 273,000 units and 269,000 units, down 14.1% y/y and 14.0% y/y, respectively. Domestic PV and CV sales volumes accounted for 950,000 units and 183,000 units, down 34.2% y/y and 24.7% y/y, respectively.
YTD PV production and sales volumes totaled 3.462 million units and 3.524 million units, down 12.0% y/y and 10.7% y/y, respectively. YTD CV production and sales volumes totaled 660,000 units and 627,000 units, up 7.0% y/y and 3.9% y/y, respectively. Domestic PV and CV sales volumes accounted for 2.35 million units and 449,000 units, down 26.2% y/y and 2.0% y/y, respectively.
In February, NEV production and sales volumes totaled 694,000 units and 765,000 units, down 21.8% y/y and 14.2% y/y, respectively. Specifically, domestic sales were 483,000 units, down 36.4% y/y and accounting for 42.7% of the domestic vehicle sales. By model, BEV (battery electric vehicle) production and sales volumes totaled 458,000 units and 484,000 units, down 16.1% y/y and 10.9% y/y, respectively; PHV (plug-in hybrid vehicle) production and sales volumes totaled 236,000 units and 280,000 units, down 30.7% y/y and 19.4% y/y, respectively; and FCV (fuel cell vehicle) production and sales volumes totaled 80 units and 300 units, down 48.8% y/y and up 153.3% y/y, respectively.
YTD NEV production and sales volumes totaled 1.735 million units and 1.710 million units, down 8.8% y/y and 6.9% y/y, respectively. Specifically, domestic sales were 1.126 million units, down 27.5% y/y and accounting for 40.2% of the domestic vehicle sales. By model, BEV production and sales volumes totaled 1.117 million units and 1.081 million units, down 5.8% y/y and 3.7% y/y, respectively; PHV production and sales volumes totaled 618,000 units and 628,000 units, down 13.7% y/y and 11.9% y/y, respectively; and FCV production and sales volumes totaled 100 units and 400 units, down 39.3% y/y and up 48.4% y/y, respectively.
In February, PV exports totaled 586,000 units, up 58.0% y/y; CV exports totaled 87,000 units, up 23.1% y/y; and NEV exports totaled 282,000 units, up 110% y/y.
YTD PV exports totaled 1.174 million units, up 53.3% y/y; YTD CV exports totaled 178,000 units, up 22.4% y/y; and YTD NEV exports totaled 583,000 units, up 110% y/y.

China’s January vehicle production volume increases by 0.01% y/y, sales volume decreases by 3.2% y/y
On February 11, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced China’s vehicle production and sales results for January 2026.
According to CAAM, in January, the overall operation of the automotive industry was stable. The passenger vehicle (PV) market declined, while the commercial vehicle (CV) market maintained a positive trend. The New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market operated steadily, and vehicle exports continued to grow. The main factors leading to the market decline were: first, adjustments to the NEV purchase tax policy; second, the year-end transition of car purchase subsidy policies across many regions; and third, the pull-forward of some consumer demand in 2025.
In January, vehicle production and sales volumes totaled 2.45 million units and 2.346 million units, up 0.01% y/y and down 3.2% y/y, respectively. Domestic sales and exports accounted for 1.665 million units and 681,000 units, down 14.8% y/y and up 44.9% y/y, respectively.
For PVs, production and sales volumes in January totaled 2.062 million units and 1.988 million units, down 4.1% y/y and 6.8% y/y, respectively.
For CVs, production and sales volumes in January totaled 388,000 units and 359,000 units, up 29.9% y/y and 23.5% y/y, respectively.
For NEVs, production and sales volumes in January totaled 1.041 million units and 945,000 units, up 2.5% y/y and 0.1% y/y, respectively. Specifically, BEV (battery electric vehicle) production and sales volumes totaled 659,000 units and 597,000 units, up 3.8% y/y and 4.0% y/y, respectively; PHV (plug-in hybrid vehicle) production and sales volumes totaled 382,000 units and 348,000 units, with production up 0.5% y/y and sales down 5.9% y/y; and FCV (fuel cell vehicle) production and sales volumes totaled 51 units and 70 units, down 13.6% y/y and 47.0% y/y, respectively.
In January, vehicle exports totaled 681,000 units, up 44.9% y/y. Specifically, PV exports totaled 589,000 units, up 48.9% y/y; CV exports totaled 93,000 units, up 23.6% y/y; and NEV exports totaled 302,000 units, up 100% y/y.
