UK vehicle production decreases 17.2% to 68,061 units in February 2026
On March 27, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for February 2026 decreased 17.2% over the previous year to 68,061 units. Passenger car production was down 10.7% to 65,885 units and commercial vehicle production was down 74.0% to 2,176 units year over year (y/y).
Vehicle exports were down 14.6% (y/y) to 54,446 units and domestic sales were down 26.0% (y/y) to 13,615 units. The percentage of exports was 80.0%.
In the first two months of 2026, total vehicle production decreased 15.4% (y/y) to 135,476 units. The passenger car production was down 9.5% to 131,134 units and commercial vehicle was down 71.6% to 4,342 units.
"Another decline for UK vehicle production and exports is extremely worrying, given these figures pre-date the crisis in the Middle East. While the sector has made efforts to build resilience into its logistics and supply chains post Covid, the conflict adds further strain. Now more than ever we must focus on our industrial competitiveness by driving down energy costs, backing our suppliers, supporting our domestic market and securing free and fair trade with Europe," Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said.

UK vehicle production decreases 13.6% to 67,415 units in January
On February 27, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) announced that the number of UK vehicle production for January decreased 13.6% over the previous year to 67,415 units. Passenger car production was down 8.2% to 65,249 units and commercial vehicle production was down 68.6% to 2,166 units year over year (y/y).
Vehicle exports decreased 14.6% (y/y) to 52,433 units and domestic sales decreased 9.8% (y/y) to 14,982 units. The percentage of export was 77.8%.
Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT said "Weak exports to markets beyond Europe amid soft demand delivered a disappointing start to the year for UK vehicle manufacturing. It reinforces the need for a forward-looking trade agenda that secures existing preferential access - notably with the biggest market on our doorstep given protectionist ‘Made in Europe’ proposals - and builds new ones with markets worldwide. That must be combined with more competitive conditions for UK manufacturing - lower energy costs, a strong and sustainable domestic market, and specific support for our supply chain."
