Ⅰ. Introduction

Airbags were first introduced in the U.S. in the 1970’s to protect people not wearing seatbelts while driving, and installation was later expanded from initially being only in the driver seat to also being in the passenger seat. In the 1990’s there were a few cases of drivers and passengers being killed by the inflation of the airbag in low-speed collisions, so the inflation speed and power levels were mandated to be made lower by various lawmakers around the world. Furthermore, the primary inflating agent of sodium azide is toxic to humans (although inert after forming the gas), and so the use of non-toxic alternatives has become necessary.

When combined with seatbelt use airbags are a vital component for increasing the safety of vehicle passengers. In light of this they are now installed in virtually every model in developed regions, including Japan, the U.S., and Europe. Originally airbags were designed to protect in head-on collisions, but in the 1980’s systems for side-on collisions were also developed. Following that more advanced systems, such as air curtains to protect the heads of occupants and to prevent them being thrown out of the vehicle if it rolls over, have been installed. These days it is common for a vehicle to be equipped with at least 6 airbag units. More and more advanced systems are continuously being developed by auto makers and suppliers, such as rear-seat airbags, far side airbags, pop-up hoods, pedestrian airbags, and “air-belts” where the webbing of the seatbelt becomes a kind of airbag. Research is also progressing on airbags that would inflate when advanced systems detect an imminent collision, protecting the entire vehicle.

The top three suppliers in the global airbag industry are: Swedish Autoliv, Japanese Takata, and U.S. ZF TRW. However, Takata was mandated to recall a large number of airbags in the U.S. due to inflator issues, and under the Corporate Rehabilitation Law Key Safety Systems (KSS) is looking at acquiring the company. This event is likely to shake up the industry and cause concern about the long-term safety of airbags for consumers.

In this report the above three companies (Autoliv, ZF TRW, and KSS) are detailed in terms of their airbag and electronic control systems equipped on various vehicle models. To read more about Takata, Toyoda Gosei, Nihon Plast, Ashimori, and other companies see the Japanese market report.

Ⅱ. Global business and facilities of major airbag suppliers (U.S./E.U.)

Autoliv Inc.

A major supplier of automotive safety systems based in Sweden. The company performs development, production, and sales for airbags, seatbelts, steering wheels, and safety electronics. It has recently been devoting more resources to its electronics business, but airbags are the core competency for the company with that segment contributing 52% (in December 2016) of total sales. The company has the top global share in the airbag industry with around 40%. It currently has 83 subsidiaries and joint ventures across 27 countries around the globe.

Technical Development: Then seatbelt maker Autoliv acquired U.S. airbag maker Morton ASP in 1996, and since then has aggressively pursued technical development. The company now owns 22 technical centers around the world, as well as 7 crash test facilities and 14 crash test sleds. Listed below are some of the recent developments.

  1. Hydrogen gas inflator (2012): A world first environmental inflator that produces only water vapour upon explosion. Adopted by the 2015 VW Passat.
  2. Pedestrian airbag (2013): Autoliv was the first company to commercialise the pedestrian airbag, which was equipped on the Volvo V40/XC40. Later it was also picked up by Ford and Renault for their European models. Continued research into the area is being jointly performed with Honda.
  3. Autoliv recently announced that it plans to commercialise a seat belt airbag, known as the “beltbag”, for rear seats in Mercedes-Benz models.

Facilties: Autoliv had been actively investing in the establishment of new facilities, particularly in Asia, to expand global presence up until 2014. Since then there have been very few new plants opened for airbags. One reason for this slowdown could be that the company is diverting resources to its electronics division and joint business on automated driving with Volvo. However, in light of the massive Takata inflator recall Autoliv is bolstering production of the components in its existing plants.

Takata Corporation

Takata is the second largest supplier of airbags in the world after Autoliv. This report deals with the company’s U.S. and European business only. For more details see the Japanese market report. The inflator recall issue also had a major impact on the company in the U.S., with the local subsidiary TK Holdings being forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. An agreement has been made with KSS to take over all business in the region pending the acquisition deal.

In terms of technical developments, the company was the first to successfully equip an airbelt expanding seatbelt on a vehicle: the Lexus LFA. Takata also worked together with GM to create a center airbag based on far side airbag designs, and was the first to commercialise the type with installation in some 2013 GM models. Based on this record we can see that Takata is active in developing cutting-edge airbag technology.

ZF TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. (formerly TRW Automotive Holdings Corporation)

TRW was a major supplier in the U.S. with strengths in brakes, airbags, and steering systems. In May 2015 the company was acquired by ZF Friedrichshafen AG and absorbed into that company’s Active & Passive Safety Technology division. The company is now known as ZF TRW.

It is currently in third position in terms of global airbag market share, but with the recall issues for Takata ZF TRW could easily rise up to claim the second rank.

Technical Development: ZF TRW is actively investing in R&D to keep up with rivals Takata and Autoliv. Most airbag R&D is done in Detroit, while R&D for seatbelts is centered in Germany. Recently developments are highlighted below.

  1. New adaptive side airbag (2012): A new type of side airbag that keeps its air pressure higher for longer to absorb more energy in more serious side collisions.
  2. New roof airbag (2014): An airbag that is placed within the roof trim and inflates following the curve of the windshield to protect the front occupants of the vehicle. First equipped in the Citroen C4 Cactus in 2014. The company expects to release a similar unit for the rear seats sometime in the future.
  3. Rear seat airbag for frontal collisions: A system installed in the roof or back of the front seats that can inflate in small spaces and protect the heads of rear passengers from impact. The system is also capable of adjusting to the slide of the front seats, and the company expects to begin mass production in the latter half of 2017.
  4. Center airbag: The company announced a new center airbag for testing under the European New Car Assessment Program. This system is designed to prevent impacts between the two front passengers in the event of a side-on collision. It is the same as the system jointly developed by GM and Takata.
  5. New concept airbag: A new oblique moving deformable barrier that can protect passengers by forming a V or U shape from the roof of the vehicle was being tested as of December 2016 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration using test devices for human occupant restraint.

Facilities: TRW had a number of development and production facilities centered in Asia even before the acquisition by ZF.

  1. ZF TRW has been employing more engineers in Japan to develop and produce new airbags, driver support cameras, and ECU software for Japanese auto makers.
  2. The company signed a memorandum for additional investment into the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone in China in September 2016. ZF TRW will commit an additional USD 30 million to improving its existing factory to expand production and add lines for airbags, seatbelts, and electric parking brake systems.
  3. The company established a new crash test sled division within its Anting, Shanghai research center in April 2016. This is the fourth research facility for ZF TRW, and will house the latest servo type sleds and testing dummies.
  4. Started operations at a new airbag, brake, and passenger safety systems plant in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu in November 2015. This plant will produce driver side, passenger side, side, and curtain airbags.
  5. A new 50/50 joint venture between ZF TRW and Rane Group called Rane TRW Steering Systems was established for the production of airbags in August 2015. The new company will mainly make driver side and Passenger Airbag modules.

Key Safety Systems Inc. (KSS)

A major supplier of automotive safety systems, including airbags and seatbelts, headquartered in the U.S. Despite being acquired by Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corp in June 2016 the company kept the KSS name. The company is a distant yet competitive third in the airbag industry. KSS is acting as the sponsor for Takata’s corporate restructuring triggered by the inflator recall issues, and will eventually likely acquire their businesses. The committee in charge of monitoring the acquisition of Takata by KSS is expected to confirm the transaction sometime in the first quarter of 2018. After the acquisition KSS will be the owner of facilities in 23 countries and the employee of around 60,000 people, making them one of the largest safety systems providers in the world.

Technical development: KSS until recently only had 4 test centers, which is low compared to the more active competitors. Causes for this can be attributed to the fact that the previous incarnation of the company, Breed Technologies, Inc., did not produce ECUs or other electronics systems and ended up filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. However, despite the lack of research facilities the company has been able to commercialise an inflatable seat belt (the same kind as Takata’s airbelt), for use by Ford in the U.S. and China. The company also went some way towards addressing its weaknesses in R&D by partnering with Mobileye in March 2015 for the establishment of new centers in Silicon Valley and Suzhou, China. Ultimately, the company is targeting the development of driver warning systems and other advanced driver assistance systems.

  1. Twin-chamber side airbag: This system was developed together with Toyota and installed on Toyota Motor Europe’s new Yaris in 2010. It uses a cold gas inflation system and has two cushion chambers, which allows for differing air pressure levels in each one.

Facilities: Unlike its competitors, KSS is splitting its focus by placing most of its new R&D facilities in China and the Asia region and leaving its production plants in Europe. However, with the initial acquisition by Ningbo Joyson Electronic and the upcoming takeover of Takata this situation may change.

  1. Began operations of a new technical center in Seoul in December 2012. This is the fifth such facility for the company, following the U.S., Germany, Japan, and China.
  2. To expand its production base in Europe the company opened a new plant in Kicevo, Macedonia in May 2012. This plant was the first new construction in the region for KSS, and it will make airbag cushions and perform cloth cutting and sewing functions.
  3. KSS increased its stake in Indian joint venture KSS-Abhishek Safety Systems in February 2012, which supplies airbags, seatbelts, and other safety systems to makers within India and overseas.

2) Ownership/Investment Structure

Ⅲ. List of airbag suppliers and their customers (for U.S./E.U. produced models)

A range of airbags, all designed with the goal of passenger safety, are available: driver side, passenger side, side, curtain, knee, and others. It is rare for all of the airbags on a single vehicle model to be supplied by a single company; rather each airbag is usually sourced from a different supplier. In addition to the above varieties of airbag, recent types such as roof airbags (front and rear), front seat and rear seat center airbags, and pedestrian airbags are also becoming more common.

Autoliv

Autoliv’s presence in Europe and its acquisition of Morton in the U.S. have given it the ability to supply nearly every major automaker worldwide with a range of airbag systems. Furthermore, the company is somewhat successfully competing with major companies like Bosch and Continental in the ECU and sensor electronics segment, with systems equipped on a number of models. The world’s first commercial pedestrian airbag is also drawing attention.

ZF TRW

This company supplies many makers in Europe as well as the Detroit Three in the U.S. However it supplies less companies overall than rival Autoliv, and has fewer products equipped per model as well. Like Autoliv, the company is battling with major companies like Bosch and Continental in the ECU and sensor electronics segment, with systems equipped on some models.

Takata

Takata is a supplier not only for Japanese OEMs, but was also an early participant in the U.S. market. The company expanded its reach with European makers like BMW, Daimler, and Audi through the 2001 acquisition of Petri. It was also the first company to supply airbelts and front seat center airbags. It does not participate in the ECU and electronic sensor market, even within Japan. Future developments from the recall and subsequent acquisition by KSS are uncertain but sure to attract attention.

Key Safety Systems

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Ningbo Joyson Electronics, KSS supplies Ford, GM, Audi, and VW. Although the company offers a range of airbag systems the number of customers is relatively low compared to the above three companies and the number of equipped products per model is very low. However, the acquisition of Takata may be enough to give KSS an edge on the competition.
