Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CES was held as both an in-person and virtual event in 2022, with the live event occurring from January 5 through January 7, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. In-person attendance for CES 2022 dropped significantly compared to the 2020 event, with 40,000 attendees in 2022 compared to 170,000 in 2020. The decline was primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the emergence of the Omicron variant. Due to Omicron, a number of major companies cancelled in-person attendance for CES 2022, including General Motors and Mercedes-Benz. This provided opportunities for emerging vehicle manufacturers to attract attention. One common theme between these companies' exhibits was the emphasis on battery electric vehicles.

After its U.S. debut at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Vietnamese electric vehicle startup VinFast revealed its full model lineup at CES 2022. Sony followed its debut of the Vision-S 01 concept sedan from CES 2020 with the Vision-S 02 SUV concept, and announced its intent to enter the electric vehicle market. Fisker showcased the Fisker Ocean electric SUV, highlighting its market-first Digital Radar system. Togg, a Turkish startup, made its public exhibition debut at CES 2022, announcing its future production plans while showing a fastback electric vehicle concept designed by Pininfarina.
