  This article describes the trends, by company, from 2011 onwards, of patent applications submitted for rearview mirrors (room mirrors, side mirrors). In recent years, rearview mirror technology has been advancing with respect to the digitization of smart rearview mirrors.


 The number of patent applications submitted for rearview mirrors was flat from 2011 to 2014, but has been rising since 2014. In recent years, a significant number of patents have been submitted by companies including Gentex Corporation, Tokai Rika Co., Ltd., Hyundai Motors, SMR Patents, and Hyundai Mobis.

 Concerning the development items of applicants with a large number of patent applications, Gentex has applied for “Vehicular rearview mirror elements and assemblies incorporating these elements '', Tokai Rika has applied for “Vehicle mirror device '', Hyundai Motors has applied for “Inside mirror assembly for vehicle '', SMR Patents has had the highest number of applications for its “Rearview device with moveable head assembly”, and Hyundai Mobis has had the highest number of applications for its “Rear camera apparatus”.
