New Mazda3 released in Japan in May 2019

 This report covers the displays of six Japanese passenger car manufacturers, Honda, Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki, Mitsubishi Motors and Daihatsu, exhibited at the JSAE Automotive Engineering Exposition 2019 held at the Pacifico Yokohama convention center in May 2019. The contents of the exhibitions varied by automaker, with three companies, Honda, Subaru and Mitsubishi, exhibiting plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs).

 Honda introduced new products such as the Clarity PHEV Intelligent Power Unit, as well as the Honda Mobile Power Pack detachable portable battery and the PCX ELECTRIC scooter, which is powered by the Honda Mobile Power Pack. Mazda displayed the all-new Mazda3, its first new generation Skyactiv product that was launched in Japan in May 2019. The all-new Mazda3 is equipped with its revolutionary Skyactiv-X engine featuring Mazda’s proprietary SPCCI (Spark Ignition Control Compression Ignition) combustion technology (the Madza3 equipped with the Skyactiv-X engine will be launched in October).

 Subaru introduced its first plug-in hybrid technology, which is equipped on the Crosstrek Hybrid model and sold in the U.S. Subaru makes use of Toyota's PHEV system, sourcing elements of the system such as the motor from Toyota, but Subaru independently developed the Crosstrek Hybrid, mating the PHEV system with Subaru's vertically-mounted engine. Suzuki exhibited the all-new (fourth generation) Jimny that was launched in Japan in July 2018. Since first launched in 1970 as the only 4WD minicar in Japan at the time, the Jimny has played an important role as a means of transportation in various professional work-sites, as well as in mountainous areas and snow zones.

 Mitsubishi Motors introduced the PHEV system technology it adopted on the 2019 model year Outlander PHEV (plug-in hybrid EV) that was announced in August 2018 and the "Dendo Drive House" service that is scheduled to start later this year. Daihatsu exhibited a restored P-5 sports racing car. The P-5 racing car won first place in the 1968 Japan Grand Prix GP1 class, and was restored for the purpose of passing down Daihatsu’s unique challenging spirit and technologies in the realm of small cars to younger generations.
