India Market Analysis: Record sales in fiscal year 2015-16, strong trend continues in current year

Sales growth for small SUVs, strong results for Suzuki, Hyundai, and Renault

2016/08/30

India Market Overview

Production, sales, and exports in India  India domestic automobile (passenger vehicles + commercial vehicles) sales set a new record in fiscal year 2015-16 (April 2015-March 2016) with 3.48 million units (8.1% year-over-year increase). This was a result of robust economic growth, aggressive marketing of new cars by each company, and falling fuel prices.

The sudden introduction of the "Infrastructure Objective Tax (Infrastructure Cess): Tax rate 1-4%)" for automobile sales by the government in April, the beginning of the 2016-17 fiscal year, is expected to have a significant impact. From April to July 2016 a total of 1.18 million units were sold, a 9.3% y/y increase. This is attributable to factors including continued economic strength and rising wages.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) predicts that total passenger vehicle sales for FY 2016-17 (passenger vehicles = passenger cars + utility vehicles + vans) will increase 6-8% y/y (as of April 2016). Sales of utility vehicles, for which new models will continue to be launched, are expected to grow more than other passenger cars such as sedans/hatchbacks.

Exports have been growing steadily, with a rise of 756,000 units in FY 2015 - 16 for a 6.7 increase y/y. In the total for April-July 2016, there was a 9.4% y/y increase of 257,000 units, and the uptrend is continuing.

In addition, automobile production exceeded 4 million units for the first time in 3 years due to record domestic sales and exports of 4,200,000 units (7.1% year-on-year increase) in FY 2015-16. In the total for April-July 2016, there was a 6.1% y/y increase of 144,000 units, and the uptrend continues.

Passenger vehicle market by segment: Small SUV sales grow

India passenger vehicle sales by segment  India's passenger vehicle market has a unique segment classification and market structure because of the excise tax rates imposed on passenger vehicles. The rates are 12.5% for cars with a total length less than 4 m and engine displacement less than 1.5L, and 24% if the total length is longer than 4 m (Reference: The "SIAM criteria segment definitions" and "Excise tax rates by category" tables below).

Passenger vehicle sales in FY 2015-16 recorded a new high of 2.79 million units (y/y increase of 7.2%). This sales increase resulted from the strong performance of the compact and mini segments, which feature vehicles with a total length of 4 m or less. These two segments increased by 1.19 million units for growth of 10.2 y/y, and 540,000 units for growth of 5.2% y/y respectively. Together they accounted for more than 60% of the total passenger vehicle market.

Sales of small SUVs are growing in major world markets and a similar trend can be seen in the Indian market as well. Sales of SUVs with a length of 4.4 m or less, which are classified in the "UV1" segment, rose sharply in FY 2015-16, increasing 15.4% y/y to 369,000 units, and accounted for 13.3% of the total passenger vehicle market.

The passenger vehicle market in April-July 2016 has continued to grow outpacing the initial SIAM forecast with sales of 957,000 units for a y/y increase of 9.2%. The UV1 segment in particular had strong sales of 160,000 units for a growth rate of 67.4%, and expanded to account for 16.7% of the overall market. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Hyundai Creta drove the overall market.

Note. The large drop n the super compact segment in FY 2013-2014 resulted from a redesign of the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, which was reduced in size to 3,995 mm. This resulted in it being reclassified under the compact segment. The previous version's exterior and interior design elements were simplified, and the facelifted version became the Dzire Tour, which was specifically designed for taxi use.

Passenger vehicle market by manufacturer: Honda's shares plunges, strong Kwid sales result in expanded share for Renault-Nissan

India passenger vehicle sales by manufacturer  In terms of market share by maker, the major automakers Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai together took around 2/3 of the overall market, with respective shares of 46.8% and 17.2% (April - July 2017).

In contrast with this, the market share of the Indian manufacturers Mahindra and Tata have continued to decline, and while both makers saw it exceed 10% for a time, they had weak results in April-July 2016 at 8.0% and 5.5% respectively. Sales of Mahindra's mainstay UV Bolero and Scorpio were sluggish. The company introduced the KUV100, its first gasoline engine model, in January 2016, and is aiming to recover sales (about 13,000 units were sold in April-June 2016). Tata was affected by the failure of the Nano micro car. The automaker launched the Tiago, a strategic vehicle in the compact segment, in April 2016 with the aim of rebuilding its small passenger car business (about 11,000 units sold in April-June 2016).

Market share fluctuates sharply from third place and below in the rankings. Over the past 2 to 3 years Honda has successively introduced the compact segment Brio, Amaze, and Jazz; and sales of the mid-size segment City are strong. However, while the OEM's market share rapidly expanded to around 7%, it plummeted to 4.8% in April-July 2016. With the exception of the Jazz, models that previously helped the company expand sales saw significant decreases in the number of units sold. Meanwhile, Renault-Nissan has experienced a sudden expansion of its market share. The Renault Kwid, which belongs to the crossover style mini segment, had a strong launch in September 2015. It sold about 25,000 units in April-June 2016.

Export units by segment: 756,000 units in fiscal year 2015-16, year-over-year increase of 6.7%

India export volume by segment  Automobile export volume from India continues to increase, and hit 756,000 units in FY 2015-16 for a y/y increase of 6.7%. In the total for April-July 2016, there was a 9.4% y/y increase of 257,000 units, and the uptrend is continuing.

Export units by manufacturer: Hyundai continue to decline, Ford and VW increase

Indian export volume by manufacturer  As for passenger vehicle exports by manufacturer, Hyundai exported more than 200,000 units and accounts for nearly half the total, but its exports have been in decline for the past few years. The company exported 162,000 units in FY 2015-16, which was a y/y decrease of 15.2%. The automaker exported vehicles including small cars like the Grand i10 and Xcent. Even after the start of FY 2016 - 2017, Hyundai has continued to see declines.

In contrast with that, exports from the Western makers Ford and VW are increasing. The OEMs saw a substantial increase in FY 2015-16, with exports rising to 111,000 units (a y/y increase of 35.9%) and 76,000 units (a y/y increase of 16.9%) respectively. This trend is continuing even into the 2016-17 fiscal year. The main model exported by Ford was the Ecosport small SUV, which is targeted at emerging markets. VW's main export was the Vento mid-size 4-door sedan.
