Beijing Auto Show 2014: Own-brand vehicles from seven Chinese OEMs

Summary

 The 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition was held in April 2014. This fifth report for the Auto Show contains details of the all-new own-brand vehicles that were exhibited by seven local Chinese automakers. All-new vehicles exhibited by joint-ventures, such as GAC Honda, are introduced in a separate report that focuses  on foreign OEMs' exhibits.

 This report focuses on vehicles that were exhibited by local Chinese automakers, other than the "big five" state-owned OEMs. There were 23 all-new models, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric and fuel-cell vehicles by GAC Group, Great Wall, Geely, BYD, Chery, JAC, and Brilliance. Of the 23 models, 10 were green vehicles while 13 were gasoline-fueled vehicles. The report also introduces new-energy automotive technology dubbed "BYD 542 Technology" and "BYD 542 strategy" based on the announcements by BYD at the auto show.

GA3S View
 A premiere debut of the A+ class sedan under the Trumpchi brand. It is 4590mm long, 1790mm wide and 1490mm high with a 2620mm wheelbase. Unlike the Trumpchi GA3 which is already in the market and known for enhanced uniqueness, the GA3S is a production model in European style with priority on family and practical aspects in addition to drivability and safety. The GA3S will be built at the Guangzhou plant and released in July 2014 at the earliest.
 The Trumpchi GA3S View is built on the AF platform. It is driven by a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine or a 1.6-liter engine, mated with a manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Its fuel consumption per 100km is 6.4 liters (MT) and 6.7 liters (DCT).
Trumpchi
GA6 Concept
 A premiere debut of the concept model (B-class) of the Trumpchi GA6, the OEM's global strategic sedan, that hints at the direction of the Trumpchi sports sedan. Its production model is positioned higher than the Trumpchi GA5 (see photo below) which is already in the market. It will be released in December 2014 targeting the state vehicle market.
 The Trumpchi GA6 Concept is built on the B-class platform which is also used on the Trumpchi GA5. It is 4825mm long, 1820mm wide and 1490mm high with a 2710mm wheelbase. It was newly developed with all-new design as a global strategic sedan. It inherits the DNA of a sports car chassis blended with a modern design.
 The car meets Euro 5 emission standards for cars. It is driven by a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine (maximum output: 110kW, maximum torque: 210Nm) or a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine (130kW, 237Nm). The engine is mated with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DCT transmission. A start-stop system is a standard feature. The car's fuel consumption per 100km is 7.6 liters (MT) and 7.9 liters (DCT) according to the maker.
GAC Gonow Gonow GA Sedan  The first production sedan (A-class) under the Gonow brand. It is 4570mm long, 1790mm wide and 1490mm high with a 2620mm wheelbase. It has 450-liter trunk and foldable rear seats. It rivals Geely Emgrand EC7 and Great Wall C50. The Gonow GA will be released within 2014 at the earliest.
 The Gonow GA sedan is built on an all-wheel independent suspension system, the platform that the company developed for its global strategic car. The components are purchased globally. The GA Sedan is equipped with 3D combination instrument panel, Bluetooth connectivity, and the T-Box smart e-onboard system for connecting a cellular phone and controlling the vehicle and air conditioning via a cellular phone application.
 The GA Sedan is driven by a 1.6-liter DCVVT engine (maximum output: 90kW/maximum torque: 153Nm) mated with a 5-speed manual transmission supplied by Getrag of Germany. Its fuel consumption is 5.7 liters per 100km (according to the maker). It has a top speed of 190km/h. It is equipped with two airbags in the front along with Bosch's 9th-generation ESP, ABS+EBD.
Gonow GA 6470  A premiere debut of a midsize high-end SUV. It is built at the Dongying plant and will be released in the third quarter of 2014. The SUV is built on a platform that was developed independently by GAC Group.
 The SUV is driven by a GA4D20TCI common-rail turbocharged diesel engine mated with a 6-speed manual transmission. It is equipped with GPS car navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and two airbags in the front.
Gonow GA 1027  A premiere debut of a high-end pickup truck under the Gonow brand designed for both off-road and urban driving experience. It has the stability and comfort of a passenger car. It is larger in size than Gonow's Caiyun pickup. The GA 1027 will be built at the Dongying plant and released within 2014. It is built on a platform that was developed independently by GAC Group.
Notes: 1. The company has set an annual sales goal for the Trumpchi-brand passenger cars in 2014 at 115,000 units compared to 85,000 units sold in 2013.
2. GAC Group is increasing the availability of dual clutch transmissions. It is also increasing the use of turbocharged engines in new vehicles. The company has plans to introduce 1.0- and 1.3-liter turbocharged engines in addition to the existing 1.6- and 1.8-liter sizes.
3. As of April 2014, GAC Gonow plans to launch 20 to 30 Trumpchi-brand models including partially and fully redesigned versions in five years after 2014. The company has announced plans to build a lineup that consists of four 2-series platforms (A-class, next-generation B-class, long-wheelbase C-class, and SUV model).

 An electric car with a range extender dubbed the e-Trumpchi Range Extended, based on the Trumpchi GA5. It is 4800mm long, 1819mm wide and 1484mm high with a 2710mm wheelbase. It weighs 1635kg. The production model will be released in September 2014.
 The Trumpchi GA5 Range Extended accelerates from 0 to 50km/h in 4.9 seconds with an EV mode driving range of 80km. Its power efficiency is 13.5kWh/100km and its fuel consumption is 2.6-liters/100km.
 The REEV is driven by a range extender consisting of a water-cooled inline 4-cylinder engine (maximum output: 45kW, maximum torque: 82Nm) and a generator (rated output: 31kW, rated engine speed: 4500rpm). They are mated with a permanent magnet synchronous drive motor (output: 45kW to 94kW maximum, torque: 100Nm to 225Nm maximum) and drive battery (voltage: 350V, capacity: 13kWh).
Trumpchi Witstar
(REEV)
 A concept car of the range-extended EV fitted with the first autonomous driving system in the Trumpchi series. It is based on the B-class platform that was developed by GAC R&D Center. The Trumpchi Witstar was unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show held in November 2013. It hinted at the direction of GAC's smart automobile technology.
 It is 4570mm long, 1790mm wide and 1490mm high with a 2620mm wheelbase. It weighs 1550kg and accelerates from 0 to 50km/h in less than 4.5 seconds. It has a top speed of 160km/h and EV mode driving range of over 100km. Its fuel consumption is 1.9-liter/100km along with energy efficiency of 11.8kWh/100km.
 The driver sets the starting point and the destination. The autonomous driving system takes over control with the help of an onboard map recognition system. It gets necessary information from onboard radar and sensors and recognizes obstacles along the route to the destination.
Notes: 1. GAC Passenger Vehicle announced, at the Beijing Auto Show, that its future business development would rely on electric vehicles and modularization of parts. In line with this direction, the company exhibited the Trumpchi GA5 Range Extended EV in 2014. GAC announced plans to launch an A-class small EV in 2015 based on the Trumpchi GA5 platform, and a small EV in 2016 based on the platform of the Trumpchi E-Jet (see photo below) that was unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show 2012.
2. GAC displayed a new powertrain in the technology corner. The powertrain consists of a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine (maximum output: 116kW, maximum torque: 216Nm/1700 to 5000rpm) mated with a 7-speed DCT transmission. The company also announced that it would use 6-speed automatic and 7-speed DCT transmissions in future Trumpchi models. GAC also announced that 8- to 10-speed DCTs were under development.

Great Wall Motor: All-new Haval H2; Haval Coupe plug-in hybrid concept

Great Wall Motor Haval H2  A premiere debut of the all-new production model of the Haval-brand SUV. It is 4335mm long, 1814mm wide and 1695mm high with a 2560mm wheelbase. It weighs 1495kg. It will be released in July 2014 for CNY 105,800 for two-wheel-drive (2WD) version. The all-wheel drive (AWD) version will also be available.
 The Haval H2 is driven by a 1.5-liter GW4G15B water-cooled inline 4-cylinder engine (maximum output: 110kW, maximum torque: 210Nm) mated with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. It is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), ABS+EBD+BA, radar-assisted parking monitoring system, day-light, as well as front, side and side curtain airbags in the front.

 A premiere debut of the near-production concept car that hints at the future of a sporty Haval-brand SUV. It is designed in European style that blends the luxury and pleasant impression of off-road, sporty and high-end passenger cars.
 The Haval Coupe Concept features an "on-demand AWD system" based on "eAD technology" that automatically selects between 2WD and AWD modes. It is powered by a plug-in hybrid system with a high-performance lithium-ion battery (with 10 years or 240,000km warranty). It has an EV mode driving range of 50km and fuel consumption of 2.2 liters per 100km (according to the maker).
 The Haval Coupe Concept is equipped with a panoramic view system, an active blind spot and detection system, and an 8-way adjustable seat.

Geely Holding Group: All-new midsize sedan Emgrand EC9 concept

Geely Holding Group Emgrand EC9 Concept Geely Automobile's midsize sedan concept that hints at the direction of the company's latest design. Its body is 4434mm long with a 2680mm wheelbase. Its production model, the Emgrand EC9, reportedly may be released within 2014.
Geely Panda Cross  A small crossover SUV that was released during the Beijing Auto Show 2014. It is 3815mm long, 1648mm wide and 1530mm high with a 2340mm wheelbase. It has a minimum turning radius of 4.75m or less. Its fuel consumption per 100km is 7.2 liters for 1.3-liter engine version and 7.9 liters for 1.5-liter engine version.
 The Panda Cross is driven either by a 1.5-liter or 1.3-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine (1.5-liter engine has maximum output: 69kW, maximum torque: 128Nm, 1.3-liter engine has maximum output: 63kW, maximum torque: 110Nm). The engines are mated with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The Panda Cross is equipped with ABS+EBD and airbags for the driver and the front passenger seats. GPS and multi-media player (music, DVD) are optional.

 A hybrid sedan for family use based on Geely Automobile's strategic car, the Emgrand EC7. The series-parallel strong type hybrid model is 4635mm long, 1789mm wide and 1470 mm high with a 2650mm wheelbase. It will be released at the end of 2014.
 The hybrid sedan has a top speed of 175km/h (109mph) and accelerates from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in 13 seconds. Its fuel consumption per 100km is 4.9 liters (city roads), 5.5 liters (highway) and 5.0-liters (combined), 35% more efficient than the gasoline-powered counterparts.
 The hybrid powertrain comprises a 1.8-liter gasoline engine, a drive motor (maximum output: 56kW), a generator (maximum output: 36kW), lithium-ion drive battery (total capacity: 6Ah, voltage: 288V), e-CVT and the Ht1800 power steering system.
Emgrand Cross Concept PHEV  A premiere debut of a plug-in hybrid concept of the Emgrand Cross crossover. It is built on Geely Automobile's Framework Extendable (FE) platform. It is the second concept car developed by Geely Shanghai Design Center. The PHEV is 4435mm long with a 2680mm wheelbase. Its production model will be released in the latter half of 2015.
 The PHEV accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 10 seconds with a top speed of 190km/h. It has an EV mode driving range of 50km and hybrid mode driving range of 650km (in European NEDC mode). It has 46g/km CO2 emission.
 The PHEV adopts the GL-ESD energy distribution system with which Geely Automobile holds intellectual property right. The powertrain consists of a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine (maximum output: 136hp, maximum torque: 172Nm), two drive motors (65kW/240Nm and 40kW/100Nm, and lithium-ion drive battery (capacity: 10kWh).

BYD Auto BYD G5 3box  A premiere debut of a B-class urban sports sedan. It is 4700mm long, 1790mm wide and 1480mm high with a 2670mm wheelbase. The single most distinctive feature is the "BYD second-generation remote driving system" for both forward and backup driving. The sedan will be released in September 2014.
Note: The first-generation remote driving system is designed for remote control of basic vehicle functions within 20-meter direct vision.
 The BYD G5 is driven by a 1.5-liter BYD473QE aluminum inline 4-cylinder water-cooled gasoline engine (maximum output: 80kW, maximum torque: 145Nm) or a VVT turbocharged BYD476ZQA gasoline engine (maximum output: 113kW, maximum torque: 240Nm). The engine is mated with a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, or 6-speed DCT transmission.
 The sedan is equipped with a PM2.5-class air purification system, LED day-light, night view system, and 360-degree visual monitoring system.

BYD Auto Tang PHEV  A global premiere of a full-time all-wheel drive SUV fitted with BYD DM II, BYD's original plug-in hybrid system. The Tang is based on the BYD S7 that is already in the market. It is 4810mm long, 1855mm wide and 1720mm high with a 2720mm wheelbase. It accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds with an EV mode range of 85km. Its fuel consumption is 2.0-liter/100km. It will be released in the fourth quarter of 2014.
 The Tang PHEV is the first model that meets the "542 performance goals" that were announced at this year's Beijing Auto Show. It shares the BYD DM II plug-in hybrid system (maximum output: 371kW, maximum torque: 720Nm) with the Qin that is already in the market. According to BYD, the PHEV system delivers power equivalent to a 6.0-liter internal combustion engine.
 The powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter BYD487ZQA direct-injection turbocharged engine (rated output: 151kW, maximum torque: 320Nm) and the new lithium iron phosphate battery (capacity: 18.4kWh). Both the engine and the battery were independently developed by the BYD Auto. They are mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission with a manual mode (6HDT45) and a drive motor each for front and rear wheels (maximum output: 110kW, maximum torque: 200Nm).
Qin EV  The Qin EV is the electric version (sedan) of the Qin, a plug-in hybrid model that is already in the market. The front-wheel drive (FWD) sedan is 4740mm long, 1770mm wide and 1500mm high with a 2670mm wheelbase. It weighs 1800kg and accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds or less. It has a top speed of 150km/h and a driving range of 200km maximum.
 The powertrain consists of the company's new lithium iron phosphate drive battery (capacity: 37.7kWh, higher voltage than the previous generation) mated with the drive motor (maximum output: 60kW, maximum torque: 310Nm). Its electric energy consumption is 16.5kWh/100km.

BYD Auto BYD 542 Technology  BYD Auto unveiled "542 Technology," a hybrid technology of a global excellence, at the Beijing Auto Show 2014. The 542 technology aims to set standards for key performance goals: '5' stands for 0 to 100km/h acceleration time within 5 seconds, '4' stands for 4-wheel drive system with motors, and '2' stands for technology to achieve fuel consumption of no more than 2 liters per 100km travel.
① Drive battery: Lithium iron phosphate battery of higher output and voltage than the previous model
 Three power sources (gasoline engine, front wheel drive motor, rear wheel drive motor) are used to achieve higher output, faster speed of rotation and more efficient power.
② High-speed electric AWD system Automatic switching between AWD and 2WD modes makes maneuverability easier.
 <Example: Tang PHEV> (1) High power and zero emission achieved by full-time AWD in EV mode; (2) High power and low fuel consumption achieved by on-demand AWD in hybrid mode.
 BYD announced "542 strategy" under which the forward-looking "542 performance goals" will be achieved in all its new energy vehicles.

Note: BYD reportedly will launch two new plug-in hybrid models in the next two years (the Han, a new-energy vehicle in 2015, and the Ming driven by a new drive system in 2016).

Chery Automobile Chery Concept α  A premiere debut of a concept car of the all-new Arrizo 5 sports sedan. The company announced that the production model, Arrizo 5 (tentative name), would be released by 2016.
 Designed by a team led by the former GM designer, James Hope, and the former Porsche designer, Hakan Saracoglu. The Chery Concept α is the first concept car innovated from the development stage on featuring the all-new "Chery Design." Chery Design reflects four elements of Proportion, Branding, Design Language, and Quality.
Chery Concept β  A premiere debut of the concept car of the Tiggo 3 SUV which was fully-redesigned for production. It is also the first concept car that hints at the direction of Chery Automobile's SUV development. The production model will be released by 2016 (announced by Chery Automobile).

Chery Automobile Arrizo 7 PHEV  A plug-in hybrid sedan based on the Arrizo 7 that is already in the market. It was co-developed with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Its platform is entirely made of carbon fiber to reduce the vehicle weight to 1340kg.
 Note: The 40 to 60% reduction of the platform weight leads 10% reduction in the gross vehicle weight and 7% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the Arrizo 7 gasoline-fueled counterpart.
 The plug-in hybrid system consists of a "single type electric drive motor system" of relatively high cost efficiency, DCT, engine, generator and reduction gear. The generator and the drive motor adopt high-performance fluid cooling technology to enable high output over extended time.

JAC JAC SC-9 Concept  A premiere debut of the 3-row 6-seater full-size SUV concept (front-engine rear-wheel drive 2WD/AWD). Its body and the interior were designed by JAC's design center in Italy. It is 5200mm long with a 3700mm wheelbase. The production model (SUV) will be released in 2017 for an estimated price of over CNY 200,000.
 The concept car is built on a frame platform. The independently developed Refine-series powertrain consists of a 1.9-liter turbocharged diesel engine, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline, or 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter gasoline engine. JAC reportedly will add an all-new 6-cylinder engine to the series.
 The motor-driven seats on the second row can rotate 360 degrees. The car will be equipped with an inter-rear mirror with a monitor that assists backing for parking, and MMI (Man-Machine Interface) called PHONEBOOK that is currently under development.

 JAC's 5th-generation 5-seater electric hatchback. It is 4310mm long, 1710mm wide and 1500mm high with a 2490mm wheelbase. It will reportedly be released soon. It has a top speed of 120km/h and eco-mode driving range of 200km. It takes 8 hours to fully charge from a common charger, 2.5 hours from a dedicated charging station.
 It is built on JAC's all-new platform. The electric drive system consists of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (maximum output: 50kW, maximum torque: 215Nm), 2-speed gearbox, and ternary alloy lithium-ion drive battery (capacity: 70.4Ah, 23.3kWh).

Brilliance Auto 2014 year model Greater China Concept  The 4th-generation concept car (2014 year model with 5 seats) of the Greater China high-end sedan under the Brilliance brand. It is 4910mm long, 1865mm wide and 1480mm high with a 2900mm wheelbase.
 The car is driven by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that meets Euro 5 emission standards for cars, mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It is equipped with 4G Internet connectivity, E-drive smart control, AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System) and ACC (Adaptive Cruiser Control).

Brilliance Auto Brilliance H230-EV (EV)  An electric version of the Brilliance H230 which is already in the market. It was unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show 2013. It will reportedly be released by 2016 (or early 2015 at the earliest).
 Brilliance H230 has a driving range of 150km maximum. It takes 3 to 7 hours for 80% charge from a 355V power source.
