Chinese OEMs Accelerating New Vehicle Development (2)
How to achieve a 20-month development cycle: Development process reforms led by Chinese OEMs
Summary
Part 1, “New car development time reduced to 20 months: How Geely and Chery are shortening development cycles,” provides an overview of the differences in development periods between Chinese and Japanese OEMs and examined the development processes of Geely and Chery Automobile. Geely is advancing styling work ahead of formal vehicle model development, as well as the advanced development and technical validation of architectures, while Chery is working to improve the efficiency of new vehicle development through platformization, modularization, and the sharing of parts and technologies. These examples show that advanced development and the use of existing development platforms play an important role in shortening the development time for individual vehicle models.
This report (Part 2) examines GAC’s initiatives to shorten development lead times as part of its management reforms as well as the development of BYD’s mini-EV “RACCO,” which the company launched in Japan, exploring how cross-departmental collaboration, decision-making, and parallelization of processes contribute to reducing development time. Furthermore, we will conduct a cross-sectional comparison of the initiatives of four Chinese OEMs and analyze changes in their development processes from the perspectives of bringing forward styling and technical validation, separating software and hardware development, leveraging platforms and common technologies, and accelerating decision-making.
*This report analyzes the shortening of new vehicle development timelines and changes in the development process based on materials published by the various companies, statements by executives, and information gathered through interviews. Details regarding the development schedules and design and validation procedures for individual vehicle models are described only to the extent covered by information that has been made public.
