Motorcycle market analysis (Part 1): Report on emerging countries

Fluctuating demand in China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil and Taiwan

2014/04/07

Summary

Worldwide motorcycle demands This report provides a summary of countries with the world's major motorcycle production starting with the emerging countries. The coming second report will briefly summarize the motorcycle production of the developed countries.

The global demand for motorcycles grew by 0.3% year-over-year (y/y) to 55.68 million units in 2013, which was influenced by the decreased demands in China, Vietnam, and Thailand.  In China, the range of decline shrank compared to 2012, when motorcycle sales were adversely affected by decreased export and sales due to restrictions on purchases in urban areas. The 2013 production fell by 3.1% y/y to 22.89 million units (including three-wheelers). Meanwhile, production is expected to exceed 16 million units for the first time in India, the world's second largest motorcycle-production country, in FY 2013 started in April 2013.

In Indonesia, sales declined significantly in 2012 due to restrictions on loans. Yet, the demand for motorcycles is strong. Sales grew by 9.6% y/y to 7.74 million units in 2013. In Thailand, 2013 sales declined by 5.9% y/y to 2.0 million units, which was influenced by the slumping prices of agricultural products and political turmoil.

Yamaha estimates that the 2014 worldwide demand for motorcycles will increase by 0.9% y/y to 56.19 million units. India overtook China as the largest purchaser of motorcycles in 2012, expecting that the demand will grow by 4.6% to 15 million units. The demand in China and Thailand are expected to continue shrinking by 8.0% y/y to 10.68 million units and by 10.2% y/y to 1.8 million units, respectively.

China: 2013 production fell by 3.1% to 22.89 million despite recovery of exports

China is the world's largest production country of motorcycles (including three-wheelers). In 2013, production continued to decline as it did in 2012, down by 3.1% y/y to 22.89 million units. The range of decline has shrunk compared to the 12.5% y/y decline in 2012. The reasons for this shrinkage are said to be: 1) improvement of product appeal after the introduction of the China III motorcycle emission regulations (in July 2010), and 2) recovery of exports, which accounts for about 40% of the total production (up 1.9% y/y to 9.88 million units).

Production volume of motorcycles fell, while production of three-wheelers increased by 4.8% to a record of 2.42 million units.

There are very many motorcycle manufacturers in China. While multiple manufacturers reduced their production volume, Jiangmen Grand River Group, the largest manufacturer in terms of production volume in 2013, boosted its production by 4.0% y/y to 2.23 million units. The company increased its share of production by 0.6 points y/y to 9.7%. In the meantime, Loncin Holding, the second largest manufacturer, reduced its sales significantly by 12.7% y/y (1.52 million units) in 2013. The company's market share is 6.6% and the gap with the largest manufacturer has once again widened.

India: FY 2013 production is estimated to exceed 16 million

India is the world's second largest motorcycle-production country. In the 11 months of FY 2013 (from April 2013 to February 2014), India produced 15.43 million units, up 6.4% y/y; India's production is estimated to exceed 16 million units a year for the first time. Sales of motorcycles in India are the largest in the world. In the 11 months of FY 2013, sales increased by 6.1% y/y to 13.47 million units, which is the level that is expected to exceed 14 million units a year.

Hero MotoCorp operated a joint venture with Honda until 2011. The company holds the largest share of production with a 37.2% share in the 11 months of FY 2013. However, Hero MotoCorp continues to reduce its market share after it dissolved its joint venture with Honda. Compared to its shares in FY 2012, it fell by 1.2 percentage points. When compared to its shares of 43.7% in its peak year (FY 2009), it declined by 6.5%. In the meantime, Honda's local subsidiary, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, boosted its share to 21.9% in FY 2013 (11 months) and is ranked second. Compared to its shares in FY 2009, the subsidiary boosted its share by nearly 10 percentage points.

Bajaj Auto is currently forming an alliance with Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The company reduced its rank to third. TVS Motor, which is ranked fourth, is also losing its market shares. Honda's strong performance stands out.

Indonesia: 2014 sales are likely to exceed 8 million again

Indonesia is the world's third largest motorcycle-production country. In 2013, it produced 7.78 million units, up 9.9% y/y, rapidly recovering from the 11.6% decline in 2012. In 2013, sales also grew by 9.6% y/y to 7.74 million units. In June 2012, the Indonesian government tightened its financial regulations. Concerning motorcycles, the lower limit of down payment for bank loan was increased from 10% to 25%, which resulted in the rapid decline of motorcycle sales in 2012. Yet, since Indonesia has limited public transportation, the demand for motorcycles is strong. In 2013, measures were taken to allow consumers to prepare the down payment and sales were said to have recovered.

The Indonesian motorcycle industry association estimates that the 2014 motorcycle sales would increase by about 5% y/y to exceed 8 million units again (reported in February 2014). In the meantime, Yamaha estimates that the 2014 sales would remain at 7.8 million units, similar to the 2013 level.

Honda and Yamaha had nearly the same market shares, about 45% units each in 2010. Yet, in 2011, the difference of their shares began to widen; Honda took a 53.4% share, while Yamaha had a 39.1% share. In 2013, Honda had a 60.7% share, which was double the 32.2% share of Yamaha. This is considered because Honda launched multiple new models in 2011 and beyond, and Yamaha's customers were more likely to be affected by the regulations on down payment.

Thailand: 2013 sales declined by 5.9% y/y to 2 million

Thailand is the world's fifth largest motorcycle-production country. In 2013, production volume declined by 14.9% y/y to 2.22 million units. Sales volume fell by 5.9% to 2 million units. In January-June, 1. 10 million motorcycles were sold, but in July-December, only 907,000 units were sold. This is said to be caused by the decreased income of farmers due to lower prices of agricultural products and political turmoil. In 2014, Honda and Yamaha estimate that the scale of the motorcycle market in Thailand will be 1.85 million units and 1.8 million units, respectively.

Looking at each of the manufacturer's market share (January-June 2013), Honda held a 73.8% share, up 4.2 points from 2012 (January-November), while Yamaha lost nearly 4 points to 19.3% in January-June 2013.

Brazil: 2014 production is estimated to be 1.67 million: same level as 2013

Brazil is among the world's major motorcycle-production countries. In 2013, Brazil produced 1.67 million motorcycles, down by 1% y/y. In January-March 2013, sales continued to decline by more than 20% y/y, but production began to increase in the spring and the overall sales remained almost the same as the previous year. Yet, this is about 20% lower than its record year in 2011 (2.14 million units).

ABRACICLO (motorcycle association in Brazil) estimates that the 2014 motorcycle production would be about 1.67 million units, nearly the same level as in 2013 since regulations that limit loans will be continued, although consumption may be simulated since the Soccer World Cup will be held (as of January 2014).

Concerning the 2013 market share, Honda held an overwhelming 82.2% share, followed by Yamaha's 11.1%, up 1.7 points, and Suzuki's 1.4%. The Japanese manufacturers (including Kawasaki Heavy Industries) held a 95.2% share.

In 2013, sales in Brazil declined by 2.0% to 1.60 million units. According to ABRACICLO, the 2014 sales volume is estimated to be 1.59 million units, nearly the same as the 2013 sales volume (as of January 2014).

Taiwan: 2013 production increased by 2.7% to 1.12 million

Taiwan is among the world's major motorcycle-production countries. In 2013, its production recovered to 1.12 million units, up 2.7% y/y. In 2013, Taiwan's production fell substantially due to the decreased sales in Taiwan, which was caused by the slumping economy and decreased exports to countries such as Japan. In 2013, Kwang Yang was the largest manufacturer with a 40.0% share of production, down 2.4 points y/y, followed by Taiwan Yamaha at 31.6%, up 3.3%. Taiwan Yamaha has reduced the gap with Kwang Yang substantially.

Taiwan exports about 40% of the production, but exports in 2013 declined by 12.8% y/y to 421,000 units, registering a decline of about 140,000 units for the two consecutive years. Exports to major destinations, Japan and Columbia (more than 50% of exports when the two counties are combined), increased but exports to other countries fell significantly. In 2013, sales in Taiwan climbed by 6.4% y/y to 645,000 units.
