 IAA 65 Frankfurt Auto Show 2013 was held at Messe Frankfurt from September 12 to 22 (Press days: September 10 and 11 ). This is the first of three-part series of MarkLines' reports covering exhibition by each OEM. The following is the first report that summarizes the details of three Germany-based OEMs, VW, BMW, and Daimler. All three OEMs showcased production models of their EVs and PHVs. BMW exhibited production models, the EV i3 and the PHV i8, from its new i brand. VW and Daimler showcased EV/PHVs version of their existing models. VW premiered the e- up! and the e-Golf, Daimler also displayed a PHV version of the S-Class and an EV version of the B-Class.

BMW unveils the i3 EV and i8 PHV, the New X5, and the 4 Series Coupe

 BMW showcased multiple production models of its first production EV, the i3 EV and also premiered a production model of the i8 PHV. It also exhibited a PHV version concept of the New X5 and a PHV version concept of its compact MPV, demonstrating its eagerness for electricification. It unveiled the 3rd-generation X5 and also displayed the 4 Series Coupe, a successor of the 3 Series Coupe.

 BMW set a lane for a test drive of the i3 on the exhibition hall . M brand models sometimes roared on the lane, in contrast with the quiet run of the EV i3. The i3 was also used as a shuttle bus to move within the Messe Frankfurt, with visitors waiting in line.

BMW Production models of i brand EV and PHV

BMW i3  The BMW i3 is a first production model from i brand. The model is a 4-seater compact. The body is made of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and the chassis is made of aluminum. The model weighs 1,195kg. The battery packs are placed on the chassis under the floor while the floor of the interior is flat. The rear door is very small, but as it is the double door with no B pillar, passengers can easily get into the car. Production will begin at the Leipzig plant in Germany on September 18, 2013. The price starts at EUR 34,950 (In Germany, the price of the 3 Series sedan and the 5 Series start at about EUR 29,000 and at EUR 39,900, respectively).
 The motor drives the rear wheels with a maximum output of 125kW. The cruising range is 130-160km, which can be extended by more than 20km by shifting to battery-saving modes (ECO PRO mode, ECO PRO+mode). With the optional 650cc 2-cylinder engine (for power generation), the cruising range can be extended up to 300km.
 The model has a cellular phone line available and constantly receives information from BMW. The navigation system shifts to battery-saving modes when it judges the battery will be dead before the vehicle reaches the destination, or navigates the driver to a nearby battery-charging station if necessary.
BMW i8  BMW unveiled the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, a second production model from i brand. The i8 comes with a motor (maximum output: 96kW) which is adjusted from the i3 motor at the front wheel. It also has a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter turbo engine (maximum output: 170kW) at the rear wheel. The 0km/h to 100km/h acceleration time is 4.4 seconds, but delivering fuel economy of 2.5L/100km (on EU test cycle). The cruising range in EV mode is 35km, while the total cruising range including a gasoline engine is 500km. The model is scheduled to be launched at the beginning of 2014.
 Like the i3, the body of the i8 is made of CFRP and the chassis is made of aluminum to reduce the vehicle weight to 1,490kg.

3rd-generation X5 and PHV version concept

X5  BMW unveiled the 3rd-generation X5 large crossover. The model is longer than the former model by 32mm, but is lighter by about 90kg. The fuel economy improved by about 16% compared with the former model to 10.4L/100km. All the models meet EURO6 emission standards. Almost all the models feature the BMW all-wheel-drive system, xDrive. The Spartanburg plant in the US produces the model.
Concept X5 eDrive  The Concept X5 eDrive is a PHV version concept of the 3rd-generation X5. The cruising range in EV mode is 30km. The fuel consumption is 3.8L/100km (on EU test cycle). The model combines a 4-cylinder turbo engine (displacement: unknown), an electric motor (70kW (95hp)), and a lithium-ion battery.

Concept Active Tourer Outdoor: Compact MPV

 A concept car of a compact MPV plug-in hybrid model. It is an advanced version of the Active Tourer exhibited at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. It can fix two bicycles in the interior. The model uses the same PHV system. The1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbo engine drives the front wheels while a motor drives the rear wheels. The output of the system is more than 140 kW. The fuel consumption is 2.5L/100km.

BMW 4 Series Coupe: A successor of the 3 Series Coupe

 A production model of the successor of the 3 Series coupe, To display uniqueness as a coupe, the model is renamed as the 4 Series, separated from the 3 Series. The model is 26 mm longer and 43 mm wider than the former model, but is 5kg lighter in vehicle weight.

VW Group premieres EV, the e-up! while Audi showcases a PHV concept car

 VW announced that it would also be a leader in the EV market by 2018 at an event held the day before the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. It plans to initially market 14 EVs/HVs through each brand in the Group by 2014. If sufficient demand is expected, VW will market up to 40 models powered by alternative fuels. VW's electrification strategy has already been reflected in its modularization strategy. VW's Modular toolkit platform is designed to come with an electric system.


 In line with the strategy, VW exhibited HVs/PHVs including EVs such as the e-up! and the e-golf at the exhibition site, highlighting its green cars. Audi also showcased its PHV concept, the Sport quattro concept, and the A3 e-Tron, which is scheduled to be launched in 2014. The German company uses the same modular platform MQB for EV VW e-Golf and PHV Audi A3 e-tron.

VW's first EV production model, the e-up! and e-Golf

e-up!  VW unveiled a production model of the e-up!, an EV version of the up! small car. The model is developed for urban residents. It comes with a drive motor (maximum output: 60kW/maximum torque: 210Nm) and a lithium-ion battery (18.7kWh). The batteries are stowed under the floor and are also stored under the front and rear seats. VW produces motors and reducers, and lithium-ion batteries at its production facilities in Germany. The cruising range is up to 160km (European NEDC mode). The model weighs 1,185kg. The model will be launched in Germany in October 2013. The price is EUR 26,900.
e-load up!  The e-load up! is a commercial delivery van developed based on the e-up!. The maximum load is 306kg.
e-Golf  The e-Golf is an EV developed based on the New Golf. The cruising range is 190km (provisional value). VW will launch the model in Europe in the spring of 2014 and then will start marketing it in Asia and North America between the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015. It is also scheduled to announce a PHV version in 2014 which is capable of running more than 50km in EV mode.
 In the EV powertrain, a motor produces a maximum output of 85kW and a maximum torque of 270Nm. The e-Golf has a 24.2kWh lithium-ion battery under the front and rear seats and in the center tunnel. Three drive modes are available to limit the maximum output of the motor. Five brake modes are available depending on the presence or absence of regenerative braking and on the amount of regenerative braking. VW will produce motors, reducers, and lithium-ion batteries at its facilities in Germany. The e-Golf is the first VW model that features LED head lights as standard equipment.

Golf Sportsvan, minivan concept car

 VW unveiled a minivan concept car, Golf Sportsvan. The model is a successor of the Golf Plus. It is 134mm longer and 48mm wider with a 107mm longer wheelbase (It is about as high as the Golf Plus).The Golf Sportsvan improves fuel consumption up to 19% compared to the former model. The fuel consumption of 1.6 TDI Bluemotion with a diesel engine (maximum output: 81kW) is 3.7L/100km. VW is scheduled to launch the model in mid 2014.

Sport quattro concept  Audi unveiled a PHV concept of a high-end sports car. The model is 4,602mm long, which is more than 300mm longer than the Quattro Concept exhibited at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The LED head light and tail light are used with no cover as a unique feature. The design of the grill indicates the future direction of design for Audi sports models.
* The PHV system consists of a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine (maximum output: 412 kW), an 8-speed AT, an electric motor (maximum output: 110kW), and a lithium-ion battery pack (14.1kWh). The maximum output of the system is 515 kW (700hp). The model features a start/stop system and COD (Cylinder On Demand), which shuts down four out of the eight cylinders when the engine is at low load. The fuel consumption is 2.5L/100km (on European combined mode). The CO2 emissions are 59g/km. The cruising range in EV mode is up to 50km.
nanuk quattro concept  Audi unveiled the nanuk quattro concept, a crossover of a mid-engined sports and off-road recreational vehicle. The model is designed by Italdesign Giugiaro, which was affiliated by VW. The 5.0-liter V10 twin-turbo diesel engine produces a maximum output of more than 400 kW and a maximum torque of 1000Nm. The maximum speed is 305km/h.
* The air suspension offers three levels of ground clearance (standard, 30mm lower, and 40mm higher). The model is equipped with a steering system that is capable of steering the rear wheels. The rear wheels turn up to 9 degrees in the opposite direction from the front wheels at low speeds to enhance turning performance. The rear wheels turn up to 2.5 degrees in the same direction of the front wheels at high speeds to enhance driving stability.

A3 Cabriolet  Audi unveiled the New A3 Cabriolet 4-seater open car. The model is 180mm longer than the former model, but is 50kg lighter including 30kg with the white body and 20kg with the engine and interior. VW is scheduled to deliver the model starting in the first quarter of 2014.
A3 Sportback e-tron  A PHV based on the A3 Sportback 5-door hatchback. The model was unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. It is scheduled to be launched in 2014. It has a front-wheel-drive hybrid system consisting of a 1.4-liter turbo engine (maximum output: 110kW), a 6-speed DCT, and a motor in-between (maximum output: 75kW). The 8.8kWh lithium-ion battery is placed under the rear seat. The cruising range in EV mode is 50km. The fuel consumption is 1.5L/100km. VW considers making the model compatible with wireless charging in the future.
A3 ultra  The A3 ultra is a fuel efficient model of A3 launched in September 2013. The model comes with a 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine, delivering fuel economy of 3.2L/100km, which is the highest among Audi models. The model uses light-weight composite materials to reduce vehicle weight to 1,205kg. It is 15mm lower and features low rolling resistance tires. The final gear ratio has been changed.

SEAT and Skoda models unveiled

SEAT LEON ST  SEAT unveiled a station wagon version of the New LEON. The model is 4,535mm long, which is about the same as a station wagon version of the Golf in the VW Group. It features MQB module platform for a transverse-mounted engine. The fuel consumption of a model with a new 1.6-liter TDI Ecomotive diesel engine is 3.2L/100km (NEDC).
Skoda Rapid Spaceback  Skoda unveiled the New Rapid Spaceback. The model is a hatchback of the Rapid, which is a production model of the MissonL exhibited at the previous Frankfurt Motor Show. The Skoda Rapid Spaceback is Skoda's first hatchback model. It is scheduled to be launched in October 2013.

Daimler showcases a PHV of S-Class, a coupe, and an autonomous driving vehicle

 Among Mercedes-Benz models, Daimler aggressively promoted the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid (a PHV model of the S-Class), the S-Class coupe concept (a coupe), and the S 500 INTELLIGENT DRIVE (an experimental model for autonomous driving), and a model based on the New S-Class. Daimler exhibited an EV based on the B-Class compact car scheduled to be launched in 2014 and its first compact crossover, the GLA-Class. Among smart models, Daimler unveiled the four joy, a design concept of a 4-seater EV, which suggests the next smart forfour.

 Many visitors paid attention to Daimler's latest technologies including the powertrain of the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid and a 9-speed AT 9G-TRONIC.

Three S-Class: PHV model, coupe model, and an experimental model for autonomous driving

S 500 Plug-in Hybrid  Daimler unveiled the S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID, a PHV model of the New S-Class. The fuel consumption is 3.0L/100km. The cruising range in EV mode is about 30km. The model comes with a 3.0-liter V6 engine, a 7-speed AT, and a motor in-between having a maximum output of 80km. The lithium-ion battery placed on the rear axle has a capacity ten times larger than that of the S 400 Hybrid, which has already been marketed. The S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID is scheduled to be launched in 2014.
S-Class coupe concept  The S-Class coupe concept is a concept model of S-Class 2-door coupe, suggesting a successor model of the current CL-Class. Yet, although it is a concept car, it ran many times at the exhibition site. The exterior features a sensuous design, a panoramic glass roof with no B pillar. The model comes with a 4.7-liter V8 twin-turbo engine (maximum output: 335kw). It shares Intelligent Drive, safety technology using stereo camera radar and an ultrasonic sensor, with the S-Class.
S 500 INTELLIGENT DRIVE  Daimler unveiled the S 500 INTELLIGENT DRIVE, an experimental vehicle based on the S-Class. In August 2013, the model traveled about 100km on public roads in autonomous driving in Germany. Daimler plans to start marketing a model with autonomous driving by 2020.
 The sensors used in this experimental vehicle are ones upgraded from sensors used in the S-Class currently marketed. The main improvements are as follows:
* The distance between the stereo cameras are made longer to detect obstacles located further with the cameras.
* Two additional long-range radar units on the front bumper and one for rear-view monitoring.
* Additional four short-range radar at four corners of the vehicle.
* One camera that takes photos of surrounding views to compare them with the digital map in order to identify where the vehicle is located.
 Daimler, through its alliance with Nokia, creates a detailed 3D map of public roads (location of traffic lights and signs, number of lanes, etc.) on which it test ran. Daimler says that a digital map is a must for autonomous driving in the future.
 Major future technological challenges include communications with other people using the road and identification of the location of vehicles at a complex intersection.

B-Class Electric Drive: EV scheduled to be launched in 2014

 The model is an EV developed jointly with US-based TESLA based on the B-Class compact car. It is scheduled to be launched in the US in 2014 and then in Europe. The model uses a motor made by TESLA. The output and torque of the motor is boosted (maximum output: from 100kW to 130kW, maximum torque: from 310Nm to 340Nm)compared to that at New York Auto Show in March 2013, when the model was unveiled. The cruising range is 200km (NEDC).

GLA-Class makes its debut

 Mercedes-Benz unveiled its first compact crossover. The model is the fourth model among the five compact cars that Mercedes-Benz launches. It will be launched in 2014. The model is 4,417mm long, which is the shortest Mercedes-Benz SUV. The Cd value that describes the aerodynamic performance is 0.29. The GLA 200 CDI with a 2.2-liter in-line 4-cylinder diesel turbo engine delivers fuel consumption of 4.3L/100km and emits 114g/km CO2.

9-speed AT 9G-TRONIC

 The 9-speed AT 9G-TRONIC is Mercedes-Benz's first 9-speed AT used in the E 350 BlueTEC launched in September 2013. It can be used in various types of vehicles including rear-wheel-drive vehicle, all-wheel-drive vehicle, HV, and PHV. The ratio coverage is 9.15. The 9-speed AT 9G-TRONIC has a peak torque tolerance of 1000Nm.

four joy A design concept car with no doors and rear window. It is a 4-seater EV. The model comes with a 55 kW motor that drives the rear wheels and a 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery. It takes less than one hour to charge the battery on a quick charge. Length: 3494/width: 1978/height: 1494mm (The 4-seater forfour launched in 2004 is 3750mm long).
forstars A 2-seater EV concept that was unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The model is 3550mm long which is 810mm longer than that of the current fortwo.
