IAA - Frankfurt Motor Show 2011 (2): PSA, Renault, Fiat, and Hyundai/Kia
PSA's diesel hybrid model and Fiat's new Panda unveiled
The IAA 64 Frankfurt Motor Show 2011 was held at Messe Frankfurt in Frankfurt, Germany from September 15th to 25th, 2011 (press days were on September 13th and 14th). The exhibition report has been broken down into three reports and this is the second report. This report covers: France-based PSA and Renault, Italy-based Fiat, and Korea-based Hyundai Group. The third report will cover Japanese and U.S. OEMs.
At the exhibition, PSA featured the world's first diesel hybrid system, the HYbrid4, under the Peugeot brand. Under the Citroen brand, it drew attraction to its DS line-up which is its high-end model brand. Renault showcased models such as its light commercial vehicle EV concept.
Fiat and Kia, which is under the umbrella of the Hyundai Group, each unveiled its compact car, the Fiat Panda and Kia Rio (3-door model), respectively. Under the Hyundai brand, the 2nd-generation model of the i30 C-segment car, which supported the remarkable success of the brand in Europe, was unveiled.
PSA: unveils Peugeot 508 RXH which comes with HYbrid4 diesel hybrid system
PSA exhibited the models with the world's first diesel hybrid system, the HYbrid4. In this hybrid system, the diesel engine drives the front wheels while the motor drives the rear wheels. As production models with the HYbrid4, the company showcased the Peugeot 3008 (scheduled to be launched in the fall of 2011), the Peugeot 508 RXH (scheduled to be launched in the spring of 2012), and the Citroen DS5 (scheduled to be launched at the end of 2011).
In addition, the company unveiled two large concept cars. Peugeot showcased a 6-seater diesel plug-in hybrid MPV, the HX1, and Citroen showcased a 9-seater large van, the Tubik.

HYbrid4: PSA's diesel hybrid system
|Summary||The HYbrid4 is the world's first diesel hybrid system that PSA developed. The diesel engine drives the front wheels while the motor drives the rear wheels. The drivelines for the front wheels and the rear wheels are separated. The engine is a 2.0L HDi diesel engine (with a maximum output of 120kW and maximum torque of 163bhp) with a start/stop system and regenerative braking. A motor (with a maximum output of 27kW and maximum torque of 37bhp) and a drive nickel-hydrogen battery (with a capacity of 1.2kWh) are equipped. A 6-speed AMT is used for the transmission.|
|Four driving modes||(1) Auto: The vehicle automatically drives using the engine and motor to improve fuel efficiency. (2) ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle): The vehicle runs only on a motor (up to 2-3km).Then it automatically shifts to the Auto mode. (3) 4WD: In this mode, when the road condition is bad and keeping a firm hold of the road is required, the four wheels are driven at low speed. (4) Sport: In this mode, the motor and engine are utilized to the utmost to bring forth an excellent response and powerful driving force.|
Peugeot: exhibits three diesel hybrid models
|508 RXH||The 508 RXH is a diesel hybrid version of Peugeot's flagship model, the 508 (launched in February 2011). Compared to the base model (station wagon), this model is 54mm higher in terms of ground clearance. The 508 RXH is Peugeot's second HV model. It is scheduled to be launched in the spring of 2012. It comes with the HYbrid4 hybrid diesel system. The fuel economy is up to 4.2L/100km (European Combined Cycle fuel economy: Note).|
|3008 Hybrid4||The 3008 HYbrid4 is the world's first diesel hybrid vehicle. It comes with the HYbrid4 system. The fuel economy is up to 3.8L/100km (European Combined Cycle fuel economy). The company plans to launch this model by November 2011. The European Combined Cycle fuel economy of the base model, the 3008, is up to 4.7L/100km.|
|HX1||The HX1 is a diesel plug-in hybrid concept car of a 6-seater (4+2) MPV. Although it is called an MPV, this model is lower in height (1,373mm) and has a narrow body compared to its long length (4,954mm). It has a gull-wing 4-door, in which the front door opens up forward and the rear door opens up backward.|
|The HX1 is equipped with the HYbrid4 system. The maximum output of the system is 299bhp. Through charging it with an external power source, this model can run in the EV mode (up to 30km). The fuel economy is 3.2L/100km (European Combined Cycle fuel economy).|

Citroen: exhibits highest-end model, DS5, and large van concept
|DS5||As the third model of the high-end DS line-up, the DS5 is the highest model. This model is a 5-door crossover. It is 4.52m long which is 25cm shorter than the C5. It is scheduled to be launched in Europe at the end of 2011. It will also be launched in South America, Russia, and China in 2012.|
|Two versions each of the diesel engine and gasoline engine are available. The company will also launch a diesel hybrid model with the HYbrid4 system.|
|Tubik||The Tubik is a 3x3 seat, 9-seater concept car that proposes a new journey. It is a large van with a length of 4.08m, width of 2.08m, and height of 2.05m. The seat can be used in various ways, allowing occupants to sit face to face or to use it like a bed or table. The door of the passenger seat side swings upwards to free up the entire side of the vehicle. The powertrain is a diesel hybrid system that uses the HYbrid4.|

Renault: unveils light commercial vehicle concept, FRENDZY
Renault unveiled its light commercial vehicle concept, the FRENDZY. The company also showcased four EV models that will be launched in a year. It exhibited its vehicles on the first floor of the third building the ground floor of which was exclusively used by the VW Group. Compared to the bustle on the ground floor, the first floor was rather quiet.

Renault: unveils light commercial vehicle, FRENDZY
|FRENDZY||The FRENDZY is a light commercial vehicle (LCV) EV concept. Like the Kangoo, an LCV under the same brand, this model is designed to also be used as a passenger car (it is 124mm shorter in length than the Kangoo). It has no B-pillar; the driver seat side is a double 2-door and the rear door of the passenger seat side is a sliding door. The sliding door has a 37-inch liquid crystal display which displays images such as advertisements.|
|The FRENDZY shares the same electric powertrain with the Kangoo Z.E., an LCV that will be launched in November 2011. The maximum output of the motor is 44kW. This model comes with a Li-ion battery.|
(Note) Renault will launch four EV models in a year. In November 2011, it will launch an electric LCV, the Kangoo Z.E. It will start marketing the Twizy, which is a 2-seater (front and rear) ultra-compact EV, in March 2012, and the ZOE compact EV sedan and the Fluence Z.E. midsize EV sedan in the fall of 2012.

Fiat: unveils new Panda and Freemont which is first model through alliance with Chrysler
Fiat unveiled the new Panda which is a little larger than the former model. The company plans to begin its production in Italy in 2011. In addition, it showcased models such as the Freemont, an SUV that Chrysler supplies on an OEM basis.
Fiat exhibited its vehicles in one exhibition hall where the brands under its umbrella, including Chrysler's Jeep, were gathered. Since Fiat has famous brands such as Ferrari and Maserati, the hall bustled with visitors.

|Panda||This is the 3rd-generation model of the Panda, a compact car under the Fiat brand. It has a length of 3.65m, width of 1.64m, and height of 1.55m. This model is about 10cm longer, 6cm wider, and 1cm higher than the former model. Production will begin in the fourth quarter of 2011 at the Pomigliano d'Arco plant in Italy.|
|Three types of gasoline engines (2-cylinder 0.9L TwinAir turbo engine, naturally-aspirated engine, and 4-cylinder 1.3L engine) and a 1.3L Multijet II diesel engine are available. The TwinAir engine and the diesel engine are equipped with a start/stop system as standard equipment. Two types of blended fuel engine will be added. Within one year after the launch, an emergency braking function will also be added.|
|Freemont||The Freemont is a 7-seater SUV. This is the first model from Fiat's alliance with Chrysler (Note); Chrysler supplied the Dodge Journey to Fiat on an OEM basis. The design of the engine grill has been changed. This model was launched in October 2011.|
(Note)Under the Lancia brand which is under the umbrella of Fiat, the following models were exhibited: the Theme, its flagship sedan that revived for the first time in 17 years through an OEM supply of the Chrysler 300, the Flavia Cabrio, an OEM supply of the Chrysler 200 Convertible, and the Voyager MPV, an OEM supply of the Chrysler Town & Country.

Hyundai Group: unveils 2nd-generation i30 under Hyundai brand and Rio 3-door model under Kia brand
The Hyundai Group exhibited its vehicles under the Hyundai and Kia brands. Under the Hyundai brand, the company unveiled its 2nd-generation model C-segment car, the i30, the recently launched i40, and the BlueOn EV which is a trial model of an electric vehicle. Under the Kia brand, the company unveiled a 3-door model of the Rio B-segment car, of which a 5-door model has already been launched, and the Kia GT Concept which is the first rear-wheel-drive concept car under the Kia brand.
Vehicles under the Hyundai and Kia brands were exhibited at a separate exhibition hall. Hyundai vehicles were showcased in the same exhibition hall as the Fiat Group, where a crowd of visitors overflowed all the way up to Fiat's side at Hyundai's press conference. As Renault did, Kia exhibited its vehicles on the floor above that of the VW Group and the hall was rather quiet.

Hyundai brand: unveils new i30 and also exhibits new i40 and trial EV model
|i30||The i30 is a 2nd-generation model of the i30, a C-segment hatchback, which will be launched in Europe at the beginning of 2012. This model is characterized by the body design called "fluidic sculpture." It is designed and developed by Hyundai's European division. The company plans to sell 120,000 units per year.|
|For the powertrain, 1.4L and 1.6L diesel engines and 1.4L and 1.6L gasoline engines are available. For the transmission, a 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT are available. The CO2 emission of a model called the Blue Drive, which has improved fuel economy (a diesel model with an idle reduction system and low rolling resistance tires), is planned to be 100g/km or lower. The interior is similar to that of the i40 upper model.|
|i40||The i40 is a D-segment model designed for Europe. It is developed in Europe using the same platform as the Sonata which is marketed in Korea and the U.S. The 5-door model was launched in July 2011, and the 4-door model will be launched by the end of 2011.|
|BlueOn EV||The BlueOn EV is an EV that was developed based on the i10 compact hatchback. Trial production will begin in 2011; the company plans to produce about 2,500 units. This model uses a lithium-polymer battery (with a capacity of 16.4kWh). The cruising range is about 140km.|
(Note) On September 28, 2011, Hyundai and Kia each announced that it would launch a compact EV in the second half of 2015 and the first half of 2014, respectively. The companies initially said that they would focus on i10-class EVs because of the performance and cost of the battery. Kia will launch an EV from the compact CUV segment at the end of 2011, and then Hyundai will start marketing the PHV and compact EV.

|Rio||The Rio is Kia's 4th-generation B-segment compact car (Korean name is Pride). The 5-door model was launched in Europe in September 2011. The 3-door model has been unveiled (planned for launch in the first quarter of 2012). This model is 2,570mm in wheelbase which is 70mm longer than the former model and has a more spacious interior. On the other hand, it is 1,455mm in height which is the shortest of Kia's models. This model is produced at the Sohari plant in Korea.|
|For the powertrain, 1.1L and 1.4L diesel engines and 1.2L and 1.4L gasoline engines are available. The European Combined Cycle fuel economy of the EcoDynamics 1.1L diesel engine model (equipped with an idle reduction system and made 36kg lighter by simplifying the equipment while being equipped with parts to minimize the resistance of the vehicle body) is 3.2L/100km.|
|Kia GT Concept||The Kia GT Concept is Kia's first rear-wheel-drive sports sedan concept car. It indicates the direction of Kia's next-generation vehicle. It is characterized by an attached wing-like camera (replacing the side mirrors) and front and rear double doors. This model comes with a V6 3.3L turbo direct-injection gasoline engine (with a maximum output of 395PS and maximum torque of 534Nm) and an 8-speed AT.|
