HEV sales grow 23%, exceeding BEV growth by 18%
In June, electrified vehicle (xEV) sales in 12 major countries and 3 Nordic countries (15 countries in total) increased by 12.0% year-over-year (y/y) and 10.3% month-over-month (m/m) to 2.211 million units, accounting for 41.7% of total automobile sales.
Rising fuel costs have boosted sales of electrified vehicles in various countries, but the preferred powertrains show different trends depending on the country or region. While there are countries where BEVs are rapidly increasing due to government sales support measures, HEVs continue to steadily increase in various countries. The importance of diverse product strategies is becoming apparent, as seen in the fact that HEV sales increased more than BEVs in June.
Across all 15 countries, BEV sales increased by 18.0% y/y (13.4% m/m) to 1.174 million units, representing a market share of 22.2%. While BEV sales are steadily increasing in China, sales are also rising in Germany, Brazil, Japan, and other countries. HEV sales increased by 23.4% y/y and 6.9% m/m to 569,000 units, representing a market share of 10.7%. As fuel prices continue to rise, HEV sales in the United States are increasing, and there are signs of an increase in HEV sales in Europe, including Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom. PHEV sales fell 9.8% y/y to 467,000 units, but increased 7.0% m/m, indicating a recovery trend. The market share of PHEVs in June was 8.8%.
Cumulative sales of xEVs in the six-month January to June period decreased 0.2% y/y to 10.685 million units, accounting for 35.9% of total vehicle sales volume for the period. The breakdown is as follows: BEVs accounted for 5.275 million units (17.7% share), PHEVs for 2.334 million units (7.8% share), and HEVs for 3.076 million units (10.3% share).
