SDV Development: API Standardization and OSS Utilization

Automotive World 2025 Autumn: Lectures and Exhibits

Summary

To facilitate the easy addition and modification of software function applications, a characteristic of SDVs, the trend toward standardizing the API (Application Programming Interface), which is the connecting part between the vehicle/cloud platform software, has become a reality.

Furthermore, amidst the trend towards SDVs, the use of OSS (Open Source Software), which is already commonplace in the IT industry, is also becoming increasingly prevalent in the automotive industry. However, without a proper understanding of OSS, there are threats, such as license violations and security risks. Therefore, some companies have emerged that are paying close attention to how they handle OSS and are actively establishing and operating an Open Source Program Office (OSPO) within their organizations to promote its use.
OSS* Software whose source code is publicly available and can be used, modified, and redistributed

This report summarizes the presentations and exhibits related to SDVs (Software Defined Vehicles) at the 5th Automotive World [Autumn] 2025 - Advanced Automotive Technology Exhibition - (organized by RX Japan Co., Ltd.), held from September 17-19, 2025, at the Makuhari Messe convention center, Halls 1-3. It includes information on presentations by JASPAR, Renesas, Toyota, and AUTOSAR, as well as exhibits by eSOL and Persol Excel HR Partners.

Summary of SDV-related exhibits and presentations

The table can be scrolled left and right.
JASPAR
(presentation)
This presentation describes the activities of the API Technical Working Group, which promotes the definition and implementation of the Vehicle API**, a key focus of JASPAR's activities. API**: Application Program Interface
Renesas
(presentation)
The presenter explained that OSS is an essential technology that surrounds us. Still, there remain misconceptions. It was also said that OSS is indispensable in the automotive industry, while dispelling misconceptions.
Toyota
(presentation)
The presenter explained the establishment of an internal OSS utilization organization called OSPO (Open Source Program Office) for using OSS, and supply chain management using SBOM (Software Bill of Materials).
AUTOSAR
(presentation)
The presenter gave an overview of AUTOSAR, explaining the steps to benefit from the standardization advantages offered by AUTOSAR, and introduced recent activities such as OSS collaboration.
eSOL
(exhibit)
Based on its experience in the embedded software field, eSOL provides real-time OS, middleware, and an AUTOSAR-compliant software platform and its associated tools as an SDV platform.
PERSOL EXCEL HR Partners
(exhibit)
This is a general human resource services company, with major shareholders including Persol Tempstaff Co., Ltd. and Panasonic Holdings Corporation. Its staff explained its track record in areas such as control algorithm (including MBD*) development, and ECU software implementation.
