Chinese OEMs accelerating use of AI, partnering with foreign OEMs and Chinese tech companies

  The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced on October 14, 2025, that vehicle sales volumes in China showed a 12.9% year-over-year (y/y) increase to 24.363 million units during the January to September period of 2025. Of these, sales of passenger cars increased 13.7% y/y to 21.246 million units, commercial vehicles grew 7.8% y/y to 3.117 million units, and New Energy Vehicles (NEVs: BEVs, PHEVs, FECVs) were up 34.9% y/y to 11.228 million units, with NEVs accounting for 46.1% of new vehicle sales.

  Major Chinese automakers are accelerating the practical application of technologies such as AI and robotaxis. BYD established the Embodied AI Lab. Geely announced its AI Smart Cockpit OS. Chery established a new company for AI and automotive components research and development. SAIC is promoting the practical application of semi-solid-state batteries and robotaxi technology, while GAC is promoting the construction of a fleet of robotaxis and operation and maintenance facilities. Among the emerging companies, XPeng and Li Auto have strengthened their AI research and development, and Xiaomi has open-sourced a large-scale model of speech recognition it developed in-house.

  Major foreign OEMs are actively promoting localization and strengthening partnerships with Chinese technology companies. Volkswagen and XPeng are expanding their partnership in E/E architecture. A joint venture battery manufacturer between Toyota and Panasonic built a new plant to produce batteries for BEVs. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and others have partnered with companies such as Momenta, ByteDance and Huawei to develop intelligent driving and smart cockpit systems.

  In the "Work Plan for Stabilizing Growth in the Automotive Industry (2025-2026)", the Chinese government set an automobile sales target of approximately 32.3 million units and 15.5 million units for NEVs in 2025. At the same time, regulations and support are being strengthened in areas such as intelligent connected technology, high-power charging facilities, and automobile export controls.
