Hydrogen Engines - Practical examples and development status

Shortest path to hydrogen use, Ignition for high-pressure Hydrogen, Tanks

Summary

If the infrastructure for fuel cells is developed, there is an idea that if the same hydrogen is used in engines, the expansion of hydrogen use can be achieved earlier than through use with fuel cells. Since hydrogen engines can generally use the existing designs of fossil fuel engines, a large number of them have already been supplied for demonstrations as well as in the market.

Although hydrogen engines are essentially a proven technology, there are still many reported developments that incorporate recent advances in high-pressure injection equipment and hydrogen storage technology. This report introduces the latest examples of engine and hydrogen tank development, based on past practical examples and presentations organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc. in 2023.

BMW Toyota
After many years of development, 100 units of the BMW Hydrogen 7 were put on the market from 2006, but sales were discontinued due to insufficient "cleanliness" of hydrogen. (Source: BMW) Toyota has entered one of its competition vehicles in a race (see case (7)), and is expected to follow BMW's lead and begin evaluating the practical aspects of the vehicle in the future.
