Canadian car sales up 11.2% in May

Canadian car sales in May were up 11.2% from the same month in 2016 to 216,861 units, marking the all-time record monthly sales.
SUV and pickup sales, at 141,689 units, were up 16.3% in May, while passenger car sales, at 75,172 units, were up 2.9% compared to last year.
Combined sales in May for the Detroit Big 3 were up 17.6% to 98,810 units, while sales of all foreign nameplates combined were up 6.5% to 118,051 units.
Of the Big Three manufacturers, GM was up 35.8% and Ford was up 17.4%, and FCA was up 4.6% from last May.
Among Japanese automakers, Toyota brand sales were up 7.4% and Honda sales were up 11.6%. Nissan brand sales were up 5.4%, Mazda sales were up 7.9%, Subaru sales were up 17.6%, and Mitsubishi sales were up 6.3%.
Hyundai sales were up 2.2% and Kia sales were up 6.3% from May 2016.
Among German companies, Mercedes sales were flat and BMW brand was down 5.9%.
VW brand sales were down 9.9% compared to the previous year, while Audi sales were up 16.6%.
