German car sales increase 3.7% in December, 4.5% for 2016

On January 4, the Germany Federal Motor Vehicle Office (KBA) announced that there were 256,533 new passenger car registrations in December, a 3.7% increase from the same month last year.
Full-year registrations of 3,351,607 vehicles in 2016 represented an increase of 4.5% from 2015.
Volkswagen brand sales of 42,761 units (16.7% market share) decreased 16.0% in December compared to the same month last year.
Audi sales of 18,158 units (7.1% share) increased 11.1% from last year.
Mercedes sales of 22,037 units (8.6% share) increased 7.7% in December.
Opel sales of 19,148 units (7.5% share) increased 1.8% from last year.
BMW brand sales of 22,585 units (8.8% share) increased 0.2% from the same month last year.
Ford sales of 18,731 units (7.3% share) decreased 5.0% in December.
Sales of 26,209 trucks in December represented an increase of 3.3% from the previous year’s results, while the sales of 911 buses were a 1.7% decrease from last December.
In 2016, gasoline-powered vehicles accounted for a 52.1% market share, diesel vehicles had a 45.9% market share, and alternative fuel vehicles had a combined 2.0% market share.
The VDA announced that monthly passenger car exports of 308,300 units had increased 11.0% and domestic production of 365,100 units had increased 11.0% from last December.
Full-year passenger car exports of 4,415,300 units were basically flat from 2015, while full-year domestic production of 5,743,400 units represented a 1% increase over 2015.
