On March 15, Foxconn executives said the company plans to build batteries in Wisconsin and Ohio, citing the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act that spurs demand for local production.
"We will build capacity for battery cells and battery packages for energy storage systems in Wisconsin, while we will also build capacity for battery packages for whole cars in our Ohio facility," Foxconn Chairman Young Liu told an investors' conference.
The company has a site in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin which currently "focuses on server and storage equipment production”, including production of microinverters for solar power.
Foxconn’s four buildings in Mount Pleasant include a nearly 1-million-square-foot "advanced manufacturing" facility; a 300,000-square-foot "smart manufacturing center;" a 120,000-square-foot "multipurpose building;" and a 100-foot tall "high-performance computing data center globe."
Foxconn’s Ohio EV plant is a 6.2 million-square-foot former GM plant where it produces Lordstown Motors’ Endurance pickup, including assembling of the battery packs and EV wheel hub motors, as well as California-based Monarch Tractor’s line of autonomous farm tractors.
Foxconn also has an agreement to build prototype versions of INDIEV’s Indi One electric vehicle
Henrik Fisker, chairman of Fisker Inc., said in May 2022 that he plans to have his company’s second EV, the PEAR, built at the Lordstown facility, but the two companies do not yet have a formal contract manufacturing agreement in place.
