China vehicle sales in 2018 reach 28,081,000 units, down 2.8% y/y
On January 14, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for 2018. Overall operation of the Chinese automotive industry in 2018 was stable. Affected by political factors and microeconomics, the volumes of production and sales were lower than expected at the beginning of the year. New energy vehicle (NEV) sales continued to grow rapidly, while exports also showed fast growth.
Production totaled 27,809,000 units, reflecting a 4.2% decline on a year-over-year (y/y) basis, while sales totaled 28,081,000 units, reflecting a 2.8% decline y/y. For the first half of 2018, sales of each month (except February) were higher compared to the same month in 2017. For the second half of 2018, the automotive market continued to suffer from negative growth, with the annual growth rate dropping to 2.8%. The industry was subject to significant pressure since the cumulative growth rate continued to decline in the second half of 2018.

These proportions were 0.9 and 1.2 percentage points lower than those in 2017, respectively. Compared with the same period last year, the growth rate of the first half of 2018 was significantly higher than that of the second half of 2018.
Commercial vehicles: Production reached 4,280,000 units, reflecting an increase of 1.7% y/y; while sales reached 4,371,000 units, reflecting an increase of 5.1% y/y. These growth rates were 12.1 and 8.9 percentage points lower than those in 2017, respectively. Sales of each month (except February, September, and October) were higher compared to the same month in 2017.
NEVs: Production totaled 1,270,000 units, reflecting a 59.9% increase y/y; while sales totaled 1,256,000 units, reflecting a 61.7% increase y/y. Production of electric passenger vehicles reached 792,000 units, reflecting an increase of 65.5% y/y; while sales reached 788,000 units, reflecting an increase of 68.4% y/y. Production of plug-in hybrid passenger vehicles reached 278,000 units, reflecting an increase of 143.3% y/y; while sales reached 265,000 units, reflecting an increase of 139.6% y/y. Production of electric commercial vehicles reached 194,000 units, reflecting an increase of 3.0% y/y; while sales reached 196,000 units, reflecting an increase of 6.3% y/y. Production of plug-in hybrid commercial vehicles reached 6,000 units, reflecting a 58.0% y/y decline; while sales reached 6,000 units, reflecting a 58.0% y/y decline.
In 2018, sales of passenger vehicles of Chinese brands totaled 9,980,000 units reflecting a 8.0% y/y decline. This accounted for 42.1% of the totaled passenger vehicle sales with 1.8 percentage points lower than 2017.
Exports from China totaled 1,041,000 vehicles for an increase of 16.8% y/y, representing continuing fast growth but lower growth when compared to 2017. Exports of passenger vehicles reached 758,000 units reflecting an 18.5% y/y increase; while commercial vehicles totaled 283,000 units reflecting a 12.5% y/y increase. Exports of each month (except October, November, and December) were higher compared to the same month in 2017.
As predicted, China will sell about 28,100,000 vehicles in 2019 (almost the same as 2018). Those vehicles will consist of about 23,700,000 passenger vehicles (almost the same as 2018) and approximately 4,400,000 commercial vehicles (for about 1% y/y increase). After balancing imports and exports in 2019, the annual demand of China’s automotive market will be 28,200,000 units.
