I. Global operations of leading lighting suppliers

1) Global operating facilities by Japanese supplier

Koito Manufacturing

  • Koito is a leading global supplier that operates in Japan, North America, Europa, China and Asia. The company has manufacturing bases in Japan and other nine countries.
  • In 1983, Koito entered the U.S. market by forming a joint venture with a U.S. subsidiary of Hella, a German supplier. Since then, Koito made the U.S. joint venture a wholly owned subsidiary in 2001. In July 2007, its fourth plant in Alabama started operations. In September 2014, it set up a new plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico.
  • In China, Koito became the first Japanese parts supplier to establish a joint venture with a local automaker in 1989. Koito set up a new plant in Shanghai in 1996. In September 2014, Koito launced its fifth plant in Hubei Province.
  • Koit will put tail lamps using organic ELs (OLED) to practical use between 2017 and 2018. The company intends to meet automakers' needs to improve vehicle design by replacing LED commonly used in tail lamps with surface-emitting OLEDs. In its next-generation luminous source development, Koito has been engaged in applying lasers to headlamps. The company will advance the development of OLEDs as one of next-generation light sources and is working toward practical use of stop lamps and blinkers using OLEDs by 2020, which are required to have higher luminance than tail lamps.

Stanley Electric

  • Stanley Electric is a major lighting supplier that mainly produces electronic lighting products such as automotive lamps and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Its products are widely used in motorcycles.
  • In order to support Honda's operations outside Japan, the company established its first U.S. subsidiary in 1979, starting its operations in North America. In April 2015, the company set up a manufacturing subsidiary in Jalisco, Mexico. The new plant will kick off production in the summer of 2016.
  • In Europe, Stanley Electric formed a manufacturing joint venture in Hungary in 2001 with Hella of Germany.
  • In China, the company established its first joint venture in Tianjin in 1995. It later added three more production plants in Guangzhou, Wuhan, and Chongqing. In June 2015, it set up a development center in Tianjin.
  • In India, the company has been operating its business through a local major supplier, Lumax Industries, in which Stanley Electric has a 35.8% stake.

Ichikoh Industries

  • Ichikoh Industries started operations outside Japan in 1987, when it established its first plant in North America. In the 1990s, the company launched operations in Malaysia and Indonesia. It also opened two plants in China: one in Wuxi in 2003, and the other in Foshan in 2006. In Thailand, it built a production plant in 2008. In 2000, Ichikoh Industries formed a comprehensive business alliance with Valeo, a leading Fench supplier, to expand its global operations.
  • In 2012, it opened a new plant and a new technical center in Thailand, making the country the company's largest production site outside Japan.
  • The company will begin offering its general-purpose LED light source units globally. It will formally start to offer its products to European carmakers through France-based Valeo S.A. (Valeo), a group company, and is aiming to win orders from a wide range of OEMs. LED light sources, which are becoming increasingly common, are designed exclusively for each car model. The company's newly-developed LED light source unit is the world's first general use product, and has been adopted for Toyota Motor Corporation's new Prius. Through its alliance with Valeo, Ichikoh Industries aims to receive orders for different models and increase its share in the LED market.

Mitsuba

  • Mitsuba is a major parts supplier which mainly produces wiper systems and wiper motors. Its subsidiary, Oshima Electric Works, produces mirrors and lamps, including side marker lamps.

Imasen Electric Industrial

  • Imasen Electric Industrial mainly produces mechanical components such as seat adjusters. It also manufactures rear combination lamps, room lamps, high-mounted stop lamps and other lamps. The company produces mechanical components at its plants in the U.S., China, Thailand and India, while producting lamps only in Taiwan outside Japan.
