Electrified Vehicle (xEV) Sales Monthly Report (April 2026)
BEV Sales Decelerate, HEVs Perform Well; Automakers Revise Electrification Strategies by Region
Global electrified vehicle sales and composition by powertrain (BEV/PHEV/HEV)
Sales of electrified vehicles (xEVs) in April in 12 major countries and three Nordic countries (15 countries in total) reached 1.776 million units*. Year-over-year (y/y), the number of units sold decreased by 1.6%, while sales decreased by 12.6% compared to the previous month (m/m). The share of xEVs was 36.1%, an increase of 1.2 points from 34.9% the previous month. Cumulative sales of xEVs in the four-month January to April period decreased 5.8% y/y to 6.431 million units, accounting for 33.3% of total vehicle sales volume for the period.
Looking at the breakdown by powertrain, BEV (battery electric vehicle) sales in April totaled 881,000 units (17.9% share), PHEV (plugin hybrid electric vehicle) sales totaled 396,000 units (8.1% share), and HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) sales totaled 499,000 units (10.1% share). For the January-April period, the cumulative sales figures were BEV 3.034 million units (15.7% share), PHEVs 1.431 million units (7.4% share), and HEV 1.966 million units (10.2%), respectively.
BEV's sales were down 10.2% compared to the previous month and by 1.1% compared to the same month last year. While sales continue to decline in the two major markets of the United States and China, an upward trend is evident in other countries. Sales of PHEVs fell 6.9% from the previous month and 13.5% from the same month last year, continuing the downward trend. Sales of HEVs tend to rise in March each year; while they fell by 20.3% m/m, they were up 9.1% y/y, continuing the trend that began in January 2026 of outpacing PHEV sales.
In their earnings reports, major automakers have announced a review of their powertrain strategies, covering not only BEVs and PHEVs but also HEVs. In addition, regional strategies that analyze shifts in U.S. EV policies, tariff policies, and trends in subsidies and EV support measures in various countries are becoming increasingly important.
